Weekly Update #9 SFDS Week of November 8th

Dear St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy Community,

As we look towards the second week of November, it’s hard to believe that Halloween has already come and gone. We started this week with a beautiful mass led by our 2nd graders for All Saint’s Day and were able to accomplish lots of great work as well. We will be keeping the 8th grade in our prayers this weekend as they set off to take their TACHS exam tomorrow morning. Best of luck, 8th Grade! We know you will do your very best.

Now onto some important reminders, news, and events at the academy in the upcoming days….

Professional Day & Veterans Day: Remember that next week is a short week with the school being closed on Thursday, November 11th for Veteran’s Day and a day off for students on Friday, November 12th for a Faculty Professional Day. Enjoy the 4 day weekend.

Birthdays: Starting on Monday 11/8 the way we celebrate birthdays in our school will go back to pre-covid guidelines, please read below. As always please check with your child’s homeroom teacher before sending in anything. As in the past families with students with allergies such as dairy should send in a treat that the teachers can keep on days when birthday treats are given out. As always all treats must be nut-free.

There are a variety of ways in which we celebrate birthdays at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy.  Celebrations are at the discretion of the teacher.

Please communicate with the homeroom teacher beforehand.  Families/guardians may drop off party goods (cookies, cupcakes, small plates, napkins, etc.) with Security at the beginning of the school day.

The Diocese asks that all food items shared be store-bought. The reason for this rule is strictly to serve as a safety precaution, allowing the school to know the ingredients of any item.  We ask that no toys, lollipops, goody bags, frozen treats, or drinks be brought into school.

Parking: We are asking for your help during drop-off and pickup. Safety is our number one priority at St. Francis and we do not want to see any of our students hurt. Please make sure we are not blocking any of our neighbor’s driveways. This includes the rectory and convent driveways on 130th street Thanks in advance for your cooperation with these safety guidelines.

School Yard: As discussed a few different times last year, we are asking all parents to please watch their children in the schoolyard after they have been dismissed from school. We have had to correct more than a few children in the past two weeks for climbing the bleachers for summer classic and the fence we also have had several instances of children on scooters riding into other children. There should be no bike riding or scooter riding in the schoolyard until after all classes have been dismissed. We need your help in making sure that our students stay safe on school property.

Little Sisters of the Poor Drive: St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is sponsoring a Thanksgiving Drive for the Queen of Peace Residence for the elderly poor. Each year we ask classes to bring in assigned personal and food items, which are requested by the Little Sisters of the Poor who care for the residents. If you feel you can donate one or more of the requested items please send them to school no later than Friday, November 19th.

We ask you to join us in supporting our 2nd Annual Franny Fun Run/Walk Fundraiser to help us achieve our goal of school-wide air conditioning. We hope you can help, volunteer, and enjoy this wonderful school event!  Our challenge of $60,000 in donations is attainable if everyone can do their part. We are just over $27,000 which is just under ½ of our goal. All students with any donation by Thursday 11/18 will be able to participate and receive a T-Shirt to wear during the Run/Walk on 11/20.

  • Step 1, on October 20th our families, received an email providing a link to your child’s web-based donation page. If you did not receive your link via email, please search your student’s page here: https://independent.pledgebrite.org/fund/frannyrun21
  • Step 2, Share your donation page via Facebook, Twitter, and Social Media. Also, use the email and text link on the invite and reach out to as many family and St. Francis De Sales Catholic Academy friends requesting their support.   Donations are made via a secure credit card site. We will continue to accept cash or checks, send them to school in an envelope, Attn: Franny Fun Run.  Please include the student’s name and grade along with the donor’s name and if available email.
  • Step 3, check-in often and follow SFDS and your child’s progress as we strive to reach and surpass our goal of $60,000!
  • Reach out again as a reminder to family and friends.

PDHP Parent Workshop: PDHP will be offering a parent workshop A Mindful Student: Set Your Child Up For Academic Success this Monday 11/8 at 7pm via Zoom. This session will address how anxiety affects our children (& us), Ways Mindfulness can help, What we can do at home to support our children’s academic performance, and strategies to foster communication.

Register in advance for this meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYpcOyvpjMqGtB4wcZ2KyDCaPbJiGIeULR8  After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

Thanksgiving Donation: St. Francis de Sales Parish is collecting money again this year to sponsor Thanksgiving dinners for those in need. Last year, with the help of your generosity, the parish was able to purchase Thanksgiving dinners for families in need. If you’d like to help out, please send a $25 check (made out to St. Francis de Sales Church) or $25 cash in an envelope. Thank you again for your unwavering generosity.

Mass of Thanksgiving: The Academy Family Association would like to invite all parents and guardians to attend a Mass of Thanksgiving on Wednesday 11/17 at 7pm at St. Francis de Sales Church.  We hope that many parents and guardians will be able to attend.

VIRTUS Training: For the safety and well being of each and every child in our school, all volunteers must go through the following process:

1) Read and sign a code of conduct

2) Have a background check

3) Take part in the VIRTUS program. (Register at virtusonline.org. Download the registration guide.)

After completing the VIRTUS Program we ask that you please bring to the office a copy of your certificate for us to keep track of in our database. We hope that this is not an inconvenience for anyone, but we need to be sure that all adults who interact with students are in compliance.

We wanted to let all families know that there will be a VIRTUS training session taking place at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy on Thursday November 18th at 7:00pm.  The session will last three hours.  Any adult who has contact with children must be VIRTUS trained.  This applies to fundraising activities which involve contact with children, as well as volunteering in our building as guidelines begin to allow. We do anticipate having parent volunteers in our building in the very near future and this is an absolute must for any parent that would like to come into the building while children are present.

Many of you are new to the St. Francis Family this year; therefore, I would strongly encourage you to sign up for this session to ensure you are not excluded from any activities going forward.  Although sessions are held monthly at other locations throughout Queens and online and you may attend any VIRTUS program, this may be the only opportunity that will exist at the Academy during this school year.

You must register in advance for this workshop as there are only 30 spots encouraged to go to the VIRTUS website, www.virtus.org and register.  The registration directions can be found on the back of this correspondence. No walkup registration will be accepted.

The VIRTUS training is important because it helps protect all of our children. Thank you for your continual assistance and support.  If you have any questions, please feel to get in touch.

Grade 3 Family Mass: Please join St. Francis de Sales Parish in celebration of our third graders and their families Sunday, November 21st at the 10 am mass.

Advent Prayer Service: Please save the date of Tuesday, November 30th at 6:30 pm for a special Academy family Advent Prayer Service. More information about this special prayer service will be available in next week’s email blast.

Have a great weekend.
