Weekly Update #8 SFDS Week of November 1st

Dear St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy Community,

Happy Halloween!

Although Halloween has been embraced by the secular world, its foundations are firmly rooted in the Catholic tradition. Halloween actually has significant Catholic roots. The name itself comes from All Hallow’s Eve –that is, the Vigil of All Saints’ Day, when Catholics remember those who have gone before us to enter our heavenly home.

We hope you have a fun and safe time Trick or Treating with your children. Please remind our older students about the importance of respecting everyone’s property and making safe decisions on Halloween. Don’t forget to stop by the St. Francis de Sales Rectory as well from 1:30 pm-3:30 pm to see what Father Bill and Father Jim are dressed up as.

With this fun and exciting time comes a significant safety concern for many students in our school building. It is important that there is strict avoidance to bringing in any treats with peanuts/nuts in order to prevent a life-threatening allergic reaction. We are asking for your help to provide the student with a safe school environment. Any exposure to peanuts/nuts may cause a life-threatening allergic reaction that requires emergency medical treatment. To reduce the chance of this occurring, we are asking that you do not send any peanut or nut-containing products to school with your child. If your child has eaten peanuts/nuts before coming to school, please be sure your child’s hands and face have been thoroughly washed before entering the school. We appreciate your support of these procedures.

Finally, just a reminder that Winter Uniform begins this Monday. All students should be in full winter dress uniforms. Any issues with a delay in shipment should have been addressed in the past two weeks.

Now onto another busy week of events at the academy….

All Saints Day: All Saint’s Day is on Monday, November 1st. Our 2nd Grade Saints will be leading us in our All Saints Day mass at 11 am. Due to space limitations and all grade levels having to go over to the church as it is a Holy Day of Obligation this mass is for students and faculty only. We will live stream the mass on the SFDS Parish and school Facebook along with a link on our school website as well.

Picture Day: On Wednesday 11/3 students in Grades 1-7 will be photographed for individual pictures. Class Photos for all classes (Nursery-Grade 8) will be on Wednesday 11/10. Families with students in Grades 1-7 please use the following order form to purchase photos: https://fs24.formsite.com/orderforms/8k2hz6zybx/index.html

All those students who are getting pictures may remain in their school uniform or dress up for their picture. Please remind your child that dressing up for pictures is very different than dressing down. All those students who are not getting pictures taken are to be in their full school uniform.

Please note that individual photos for Nursery-Kindergarten and 8th grade will take place after Thanksgiving. A separate order form will be sent home for those grade levels closer to their picture day.

Franny Fun Run: The Academy Family Association is proud to announce the second annual 2021 Franny Fun Run/Walk scheduled for Saturday, November 20th, 2021.  The run/walk will take place on Rockaway Beach Boulevard from Beach 129th to Beach 139th Street and back.  Smaller courses will be set up for the younger classes.  The Academy Family Association is currently planning for what should be a fun morning run/walk and a small post-celebration.  The schedule of events for the day includes:

11:00 AM:         Mini Race  (Run or Walk) for Nursery, Pre-K, and Kindergarten students

11:15 AM:         One Mile  (Run or Walk) for Students in Grades 1-8

12:00 – 1:00 PM Post Celebration in the SFDS Schoolyard

***  Please Note: All participants must be accompanied by at least one parent/guardian.

We ask you to join us in supporting our 2nd Annual Franny Fun Run/Walk Fundraiser to help us achieve our goal of school-wide air conditioning. We hope you can help, volunteer, and enjoy this wonderful school event!  Our challenge of $60,000 in donations is attainable if everyone can do their part. We are just under $20,000 which is ⅓ of our goal. All students with any donation by Thursday 11/18 will be able to participate and receive a T-Shirt to wear during the Run/Walk on 11/20.

  • Step 1, on October 20th our families, received an email providing a link to your child’s web-based donation page. If you did not receive your link via email, please search your student’s page here: https://independent.pledgebrite.org/fund/frannyrun21
  • Step 2, Share your donation page via Facebook, Twitter, and Social Media. Also, use the email and text link on the invite and reach out to as many family and St. Francis De Sales Catholic Academy friends requesting their support.   Donations are made via a secure credit card site. We will continue to accept cash or checks, send them to school in an envelope, Attn: Franny Fun Run.  Please include the student’s name and grade along with the donor’s name and if available email.
  • Step 3, check-in often and follow SFDS and your child’s progress as we strive to reach and surpass our goal of $60,000!
  • Reach out again as a reminder to family and friends.

Pizza Days: Just a reminder that this Thursday 11/4 for Grades K-4 and Friday 11/5 for Grades 5-8 start our weekly Pizza days for those students who have ordered.

Last Chance for the 2021-2022 Yearbook: We will be selling our yearbooks during the month of October as our team of 8th graders begin to work on the yearbook in the Winter of 2021-2022.

To order a yearbook please print out the following Yearbook-Order-Form and send it back to school by Monday  11/1/21.  If you would like to order a school yearbook, (delivery in June) please put your payment of cash or check (payable to SFDSCA & yearbook on memo line, please do not VENMO) in a sealed envelope and return it to school no later than MONDAY,  NOV 1st. There will be no orders accepted after this date.

The yearbook is a nice way to remember the school year since each class has an  individual page.

PDHP Parent Workshop: PDHP will be offering a parent workshop A Mindful Student: Set Your Child Up For Academic Success on Monday 11/8 at 7pm via Zoom. This session will address how anxiety affects our children (& us), Ways Mindfulness can help, What we can do at home to support our children’s academic performance, And strategies to foster communication.

Thanksgiving Donation: St. Francis de Sales Parish is collecting money again this year to sponsor Thanksgiving dinners for those in need. Last year, with the help of your generosity, the parish was able to purchase Thanksgiving dinners for families in need. If you’d like to help out, please send a $25 check (made out to St. Francis de Sales Church) or $25 cash in an envelope. Thank you again for your unwavering generosity.

SAVE THE DATE

Mass of Thanksgiving: The Academy Family Association would like to invite all parents and guardians to attend a Mass of Thanksgiving on Wednesday 11/17 at 7pm at St. Francis de Sales Church.  We hope that many parents and guardians will be able to attend.

VIRTUS Training: For the safety and well being of each and every child in our school, all volunteers must go through the following process:

1) Read and sign a code of conduct

2) Have a background check

3) Take part in the VIRTUS program. (Register at virtusonline.org. Download the registration guide.)

After completing the VIRTUS Program we ask that you please bring to the office a copy of your certificate for us to keep track of in our database. We hope that this is not an inconvenience for anyone, but we need to be sure that all adults who interact with students are in compliance.

We wanted to let all families know that there will be a VIRTUS training session taking place at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy on Thursday November 18th at 7:00pm.  The session will last three hours.  Any adult who has contact with children must be VIRTUS trained.  This applies to fundraising activities that involve contact with children, as well as volunteering in our building as guidelines begin to allow.

Many of you are new to the St. Francis Family this year; therefore, I would strongly encourage you to sign up for this session to ensure you are not excluded from any activities going forward.  Although sessions are held monthly at other locations throughout Queens and online and you may attend any VIRTUS program, this may be the only opportunity that will exist at the Academy during this school year.

You must register in advance for this workshop as there are only 30 spots encouraged to go to the VIRTUS website, www.virtus.org and register.  The registration directions can be found on the back of this correspondence. No walkup registration will be accepted.

The VIRTUS training is important because it helps protect all of our children. Thank you for your continual assistance and support.  If you have any questions, please feel to get in touch.

Veterans Day Weekend: Please note that St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is closed on Thursday 11/11/21 to honor all those brave men and women who served in our armed forces on Veterans day. We are also closed on Friday 11/12 for a Faculty Professional Day. We hope our students and families will enjoy the 4 day weekend!

Have a Happy Halloween!
