Weekly Update #7 SFDS Week of October 25th

Dear St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy Community,

Many of our 8th graders from St. Francis de Sales Parish were blessed with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit during their Confirmation yesterday and today. Both ceremonies were beautiful and we are so proud of all of our 8th graders during this very special time in their lives. We very much look forward to seeing our students from Blessed Trinity parish become Confirmed in the Spirit later this year as well.

A special thank you to Mrs. Foti, Mrs. Gigliello, Mrs. McMahon, and Ms. Hayes for helping to form the students’ faith in their preparation for this special Sacrament. Thank you to SFDS Parish Religious Education Director, Mrs. AnneMarie Greene, for organizing the ceremonies as well.

Please take a look at this week’s blast as there is a lot of important information.

We hope you can help, volunteer, and enjoy this wonderful school event!  Our challenge of $60,000 in donations is attainable if everyone can do their part. All students with any donation by Thursday 11/18 will be able to participate and receive a T-Shirt to wear during the Run/Walk on 11/20.

  • Step 1, on October 20th our families, received an email providing a link to your child’s web-based donation page. If you did not receive your link via email, please search your student’s page here: https://independent.pledgebrite.org/fund/frannyrun21
  • Step 2, Share your donation page via Facebook, Twitter, and Social Media. Also, use the email and text link on the invite and reach out to as many family and St. Francis De Sales Catholic Academy friends requesting their support.   Donations are made via a secure credit card site. We will continue to accept cash or checks, send them to school in an envelope, Attn: Franny Fun Run.  Please include the student’s name and grade along with the donor’s name and if available email.

Please remember you can also look at the yearly calendar and your tuition balance through the FACTS parent portal as well.

All those students who are getting pictures may remain in their school uniform or dress up for their pictures. Please remind your child that dressing up for pictures is very different than dressing down. All those students who are not getting pictures taken are to be in their full school uniform.

Please note that individual photos for Nursery-Kindergarten and 8th grade will take place after Thanksgiving. A separate order form will be sent home for those grade levels closer to their picture day.

Orange and Black Dress Down Day: On Friday 10/29 all students will be able to dress down in Orange and Black or their favorite Halloween shirt. Just a reminder that students cannot wear costumes.

Kindergarten and Grade 1 Family Mass: St. Francis de Sales Parish would like to welcome EVERYONE to their first monthly Family Mass of the  2021/2022 Academic Year at 10:00AM on Sunday, October 24th.  Each month they will have specific grades participate in the liturgy. For October, we extend an extra warm welcome to the children of the parish in Kindergarten and First Grade.

2021-2022 Yearbook: We will be selling our yearbooks during the month of October as our team of 8th graders begin to work on the yearbook in the Winter of 2021-2022.

To order a yearbook please print out the following Yearbook-Order-Form and send it back to school by Monday  11/1/21.

If you would like to order a school yearbook, (delivery in June) please put your payment of cash or check (payable to SFDSCA & yearbook on memo line, please do not VENMO) in a sealed envelope and return it to school no later than MONDAY,  NOV 1st. There will be no orders accepted after this date. The yearbook is a nice way to remember the school year since each class has an individual page.

Winter and Summer Uniform: A few families have reached out to the school over the past month about major delays in shipping of winter uniforms from

Flynn and O’Hara. Due to these delays we will be delaying the start of winter

uniform until 11/1. This will be the last time we are delaying the start. We have

obtained a master list of the now handful of orders that are outstanding and when the orders were placed.  If you still do not receive your uniform by the week of

Monday 10/25 you will need to email Mr. Scharbach at

admin@stfrancisschoolbh.net. In your email please include what items you are

waiting for, the date of your order, and the student(s) who ar affected. We will

cross reference that with the master list and work on a solution for each matter on a

case by case basis.

Please note that starting on Monday November 1st, winter uniforms must be worn. Just a reminder that winter uniforms can always be worn if your family chooses to do so. Summer uniforms are always optional up until 11/1/21.

Haircuts: Just a reminder from our Family Handbook: “Both boys and girls are to have moderate, neat hairstyles. Boys may not have hair covering their ears.” Please keep these guidelines in mind when we get ready for our next haircuts.

8th Grade High School Information: Just a quick reminder for our 8th-grade families that high school information has been sent out many times this past month.  Please begin to have a discussion with your child this weekend of what device he or she will use for the TACHS exam next month. Please note that the device must meet certain requirements and have a working microphone and camera. Any technical questions should be directed to Mr. Scharbach ASAP.

State Exams: As we enter the second half of the first trimester, we would like to convey to parents about our participation in the New York State Testing Program for the Spring of 2021.

Academies and Schools within the Diocese of Brooklyn will be administering the following state tests in the Spring of 2021

Math Grades 4, 6, and 7

Each ticket includes a different set of three NFL teams each week of the regular season with a chance of winning cash prizes each week. SAVE THE DATE

All Saints Day: All Saint’s Day is on Monday, November 1st. Our 2nd Grade Saints will be leading us in our All Saints Day mass at 11 am. Due to space limitations and all grade levels having to go over to the church as it is a Holy Day of Obligation this mass is for students and faculty only. We will live stream the mass on the SFDS Parish and school Facebook along with a link on our school website as well.

VIRTUS Training: For the safety and well being of each and every child in our school, all volunteers must go through the following process:

1) Read and sign a code of conduct

2) Have a background check

3) Take part in the VIRTUS program. (Register at virtusonline.org. Download the registration guide.)

After completing the VIRTUS Program we ask that you please bring to the office a copy of your certificate for us to keep track of in our database. We hope that this is not an inconvenience for anyone, but we need to be sure that all adults who interact with students are in compliance.

We wanted to let all families know that there will be a VIRTUS training session taking place at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy on Thursday November 18th at 7:00pm.  The session will last three hours.  Any adult who has contact with children must be VIRTUS trained.  This applies to fundraising activities which involve contact with children, as well as volunteering in our building as guidelines begin to allow.

Many of you are new to the St. Francis Family this year; therefore, I would strongly encourage you to sign up for this session to ensure you are not excluded from any activities going forward.  Although sessions are held monthly at other locations throughout Queens and online and you may attend any VIRTUS program, this may be the only opportunity that will exist at the Academy during this school year.

You must register in advance for this workshop as there are only 30 spots encouraged to go to the VIRTUS website, www.virtus.org and register.  The registration directions can be found on the back of this correspondence. No walkup registration will be accepted.

The VIRTUS training is important because it helps protect all of our children. Thank you for your continued assistance and support.  If you have any questions, please feel to get in touch.

PDHP Parent Workshop: PDHP will be offering a parent workshop A Mindful Student: Set Your Child Up For Academic Success on Monday 11/8 at 7 pm via Zoom. This session will address how anxiety affects our children (& us), Ways Mindfulness can help, What we can do at home to support our children’s academic performance, And strategies to foster communication.

Register in advance for this meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYpcOyvpjMqGtB4wcZ2KyDCaPbJiGIeULR8  After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

Veterans Day Weekend: Please note that St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is closed on Thursday 11/11/21 to honor all those brave men and women who served in our armed forces on Veterans Day. We are also closed on Friday 11/12 for a Faculty Professional Day. We hope our students and families will enjoy the 4 day weekend!

Have a good weekend!
