Weekly Update #28 SFDS Week of April 4th 2022

Dear Academy Families,

Over the past week, all of our classes began preparing for the closing of Lent and the celebration of Christ’s resurrection through special prayer services and lessons getting them ready for the last two weeks of lent. As we approach this Holiest time of the year, please also remember that throughout this season of lent all of us school-wide are asked to stop each night at 6:30 (set your alarm) to say 3 Hail Marys. We can unite in prayer for peace in Ukraine and in our world.

Onto to some important updates for our school for the Week of April 4th, 2022.

Updated COVID Report: This past week (3/26-4/1) St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy has had 1 positive COVID case.  You can also always see how many cases the school has had since September, the last 14 days, and the last 7 days by clicking here.

Golf Outing: Our 17th Annual Golf Outing will be held on Friday, May 13th, 2022 at the Marine Park Golf Course. More information was sent home this week and can be seen below.

Please consider taking a hole sponsorship with your family name displayed or a special cause or business you may wish to advertise. A beautiful sign will be displayed on a given golf hole or two displaying your support for our great school. More details are in the brochure that was sent home.  This is truly appreciated.

Lastly, please jump in on a great day on the golf course or at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club for some Tennis where we enjoy fellow neighbors & friends for a full day of golf and tennis followed up by great eats and drinks. Put your foursomes together as soon as possible to help secure a successful fundraiser and your foursome on this truly special day. Anyone may drop off monies at the rectory as well.  Thank You.

The success of this day, May 13th, requires all of us even if you do not golf.  As we rely on fundraisers such as the Annual Golf Classic to help support the education and growth of our students here at St. Francis de Sales. If anyone has any questions, concerns or inquiries, please contact Mike Brenna- Chairman at 646-644-4513.

Autism Awareness Day: April is National Autism Awareness Month. The first National Autism Awareness Month was declared by the Autism Society in April 1970. The aim of this month is to educate the public about autism. Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 54 children in the United States today. This Friday all students may dress down for $1 and are encouraged to wear a blue shirt. All proceeds from Friday’s Dress Down Day will be donated to the Brooklyn Autism Center. Our students in Grades 3-8 will also be attending a short assembly on Friday to learn more about Autism and the unique and complex challenges on the spectrum experience with Ms. Julie Russell and Ms. Bianca Bocconi of the Brooklyn Autism Center

Family Mass: We welcome everyone to our April Family Mass this Sunday 4/3 at 10am here at St. Francis de Sales Parish where we celebrate the 5th Sunday of Lent. Card Party Tuition Raffle: One of the most anticipated and biggest prizes every year at the Card Party is the Tuition Raffle for one student for the 2022-2023 school year. Please think about supporting this raffle and getting a chance of winning free tuition for one child. (Winner need not be present). Tickets can be bought in the main office or by handing in tickets found on the order form by clicking here.

Easter Recess: This year our Easter Recess begins on Wednesday April 13th and will last until Sunday, April 24th. We look forward to celebrating the Resurrection of the Lord when we all return to school on Monday April 25th.

Tablet’s Covid Relief Fundraiser for Catholic Schools: Last week we once again kick-off “The Tablet’s Covid Relief Fundraiser for Catholic Schools.” We’re excited about this campaign because our school and students will directly benefit. This campaign will also support The Tablet’s work in reporting important news for Catholics. We believe it’s a win, win, win!. You’ll be happy to know that our school can apply all of our students’ sales toward our DeSales Technology Grant requirements. Our participation in the DeSales Technology Grant in the past was one of the main reasons we were able and still are able to provide a device to all students in our school. This was very helpful especially last spring when we had to go to a 100% remote model. We hope that all of our families think to participate in this fundraiser as it helps us keep technology current in our school building. The program is easy, can be done entirely online, and has great incentives for the schools and students.

The student’s last name

The student’s grade

Records for Next Year:  If any child is transferring from St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy for the 2022-2023 school year, most likely their records will need to be sent to their new school. Please request that as soon as possible yet no later than the end of May as many schools are closed for the summer and ask for that information before we break for summer.

St. Jude’s Math-a-thon: WOW! I am so amazed by the generosity of many of our students and their family and friends this month. We as a school have raised over $25,000 for St. Jude’s Children Hospital.  All money raised goes directly to supporting St. Jude and their work with children with pediatric cancer.

A very special Thank You to Mrs. Foti who coordinates the Math-A-Thon each year.

Over the past nine years Mrs. Foti and the students/families of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy has raised over $150,000 for St. Jude’s Children Hospital.

Haircuts: Just a reminder from our Family Handbook: Both boys and girls are to have moderate, neat hairstyles. Boys may not have hair covering their ears. Neither boys nor girls may dye their hair. Avoid extremes in hairstyles. A moderate crew cut is acceptable. Lines, designs engraved in hair, Mohawk styles, or dyed hair are not permitted. Extreme contrasts in length of hair are not acceptable. If a student or parent has any questions about the hair code, they should speak to the school before getting a hair cut/styled. If there is a question concerning hairstyles, the decision will be up to the principal’s discretion.

SAVE THE DATE

Summer Uniform: Starting on Monday, May 9th students can begin to wear their summer uniforms. This is just a reminder if anyone needs to purchase summer uniforms you should think of ordering them soon.

Prevention Starts WITH ALL- The Chris Herren Story: On Tuesday, May 24th at 7 pm. St Francis de Sales Catholic Academy will be hosting a presentation. Prevention Starts WITH ALL- The Chris Herren Story. Chris Herren is a former professional basketball player, a voice on the topic of substance use prevention, and a wellness advocate. Since 2009, Chris has spoken to over one million students, athletes, and community members, sparking honest discussions on the topics of substance use disorder and wellness. A person in long-term recovery, Chris continues to share his story nationally with a renewed focus on prevention education and challenging audiences to rethink how we look at the disease of addiction – changing the focus from the last day to the first. Over the coming weeks, more information will follow.

Blue and Gold Day: Please save the dates for Wednesday May 25th and Friday May 27th for this year’s Blue and Gold Days. Our Kindergarten-Grade 4 students will be competing on Wednesday 5/25 and our 5th-8th graders will be competing on Friday 5/27. Both days of competition are scheduled to be in the school gymnasium. After Easter Recess we will share the exact times grades will be competing so parents can plan accordingly if they plan on attending to cheer on the students.

Have a great weekend.
