Weekly Update #27 SFDS Week of March 28th 2022

Dear Academy Families,

Let’s hope the frigid temperatures are gone for good as we move into the last week in March. I know we are all ready for sun shining days! We had another successful Parent-Teacher Conference Day/Night this week. Thanks to all families for coming in to discuss your children’s great successes thus far. We look forward to a wonderful third trimester as we begin to wind down the 2021-2022 school year.

Congratulations and God Bless! On Monday, April 4th many members of St. Francis de Sales Grade 8 will be blessed by the Holy Spirit at Blessed Trinity Parish. May the gifts of the Holy Spirit be with our 8th grade and lead them to be the future leaders of the church.

Please also remember that throughout this season of lent all of us school-wide are asked to stop each night at 6:30 (set your alarm) to say 3 Hail Marys. We can unite in prayer for peace in Ukraine and in our world.

Finally please join us on Friday, April 1st at 7 pm for a school-sponsored Stations of the Cross for students and families at St. Francis de Sales Parish. We hope to see many families (parents and students) joining us for this special moment of prayer.

Onto to some important updates for our school for the Week of March 28th, 2022.

Updated COVID Report: This past week (3/19-3/25) St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy has had 1 positive COVID case.  You can also always see how many cases the school has had since September, the last 14 days, and the last 7 days by clicking here.

State Exams: This Tuesday and Wednesday the New York State English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics Tests will be administered to students. We will continue Computer-Based Testing for grades 6 and 7 this year, while 4th grade will continue to take paper-based tests. The computer-based test will have the same questions as the paper version but students will take the test on their Chromebooks.

All we ask is that our students are focused and we know everyone will give their very best. Please make sure that your children get a good night’s sleep, have their Chromebook fully charged (Grades 6 and 7), and are well rested the night before.

Card Party Tuition Raffle and Ticket Sales: One of the most anticipated and biggest prizes every year at the Card Party is the Tuition Raffle for one student for the 2022-2023 school year. Please think about supporting this raffle and getting a chance of winning free tuition for one child. (Winner need not be present). Tickets can be bought in the main office or by handing in tickets found on the order form by clicking here.

Tickets for the big event on 4/29 will go on sale this Wednesday 3/30. More information on how to buy tickets/tables will be emailed on Monday.

Absence Notes: Just a reminder as we continue into the third trimester, please make sure that you are sending your child(ren) in with a written absence note/doctor’s note when they return to school after being out sick. If your child is on a Buddy Day, documentation from the school visited is required. Calling the main office to let us know is great, but a paper trail of sorts is also required by law.

Tablet’s Covid Relief Fundraiser for Catholic Schools: Last week we once again kick-off “The Tablet’s Covid Relief Fundraiser for Catholic Schools.” We’re excited about this campaign because our school and students will directly benefit. This campaign will also support The Tablet’s work in reporting important news for Catholics. We believe it’s a win, win, win!. You’ll be happy to know that our school can apply all of our students’ sales toward our DeSales Technology Grant requirements. Our participation in the DeSales Technology Grant in the past was one of the main reasons we were able and still are able to provide a device to all students in our school. This was very helpful especially last spring when we had to go to a 100% remote model. We hope that all of our families think to participate in this fundraiser as it helps us keep technology current in our school building. The program is easy, can be done entirely online, and has great incentives for the schools and students.

Help us reach our goal of 500 subscriptions sold to help us continue to keep our 1:1 Ipad/Chromebook program up to date.

Share the above link with family and friends. Please remember that even a renewal subscription counts. Remember to share the following information with the subscriber and remind them to enter it when placing their order to ensure your school and child gets the proper credit for the subscription:

The student’s first name

The student’s last name

The student’s grade

Financial Aid for the 2022-2023 School Year: Futures in Education is proud to administer several scholarship programs, providing partial tuition assistance for families demonstrating financial need, and who meet eligibility requirements, to attend a Catholic academy or school in Brooklyn or Queens. St. Jude’s Math-a-thon: It is that time of year that St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy participates in St. Jude’s Math-A-Thon program. We are happy to announce that we already have raised over $16,000 this year. A lot of children are helped by the generosity of our school community. This year you can do your donations online and order your prizes online and have them delivered to your door or you can send in your donations to Mrs. Foti and she will take care of the paperwork and get the prizes sent to the school.
