Weekly Update #17: SFDS Week of January 10th 2022

Dear Families,

On Sunday at mass we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus, when the season of Christmas officially ends. Then we move on to the next phase in the liturgical year, which is called “Ordinary Time.”  Ordinary Time is in fact the ordered life of the Church—the period in which we live our lives neither in feasting (as in the Christmas and Easter seasons) or in more severe penance (as in Advent and Lent), but in watchfulness and expectation of the Second Coming of Christ.  In this season of endings as well as of new beginnings, we are assured of God’s ever-abiding presence. He remains to guide and protect us.

Let us today pray for a wonderful new year and a great 2nd half of our school year.

Prayer for the Baptism of Our Lord

Open the heavens almighty Father and pour out Your spirit upon Your people.  Renew the power of our baptismal cleansing and fill us with zeal for good deeds. Let us hear Your voice once again, that we may recognize in Your beloved Son our hope in inheriting eternal life. Grant this through Jesus Christ, Your Word made flesh, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, in the splendor of eternal light, God forever and ever. Amen.

Our academy continues to safely keep  “in-person” instruction for our school community.  With the current Omicron surge, it is most important that the administration, faculty, staff, students, and parents help to “slow the spread” by:

  • Keeping your child home if they are sick
  • Do not send your child to school if your child or a household family member has pending COVID test results
  • Follow the COVID Safety and Health Protocols
  • Consult your healthcare provider regarding  COVID testing and vaccines for your child. The Diocese of Brooklyn and St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy highly recommend that if anyone in your household has any symptom of COVID-19 or has been exposed to a known positive case that the entire household be tested.

Until further notice, all diocesan Catholic Academies and Parish Schools will continue to follow the current COVID Safety and Health Guidelines while the Diocesan COVID Response Team assesses the new CDC Updated Guidelines released during the Christmas Recess, and we continue to monitor the positive case reporting within our schools. We do anticipate a new Test To Stay Guideline be released soon for students who have been exposed yet not showing any symptoms, to stay in school as long as they continue to test negative. A separate email will go out once those guidelines are available.

Also, we like to take a moment to remind all of the following protocols we have in place to make sure that St. Francis is a healthy and safe environment:

  1. Quarantine and Report Positive Cases- If any student of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy tests positive for COVID-19 the school needs to be notified as soon as possible so we can notify any possible contacts in the school and make decisions on classes staying open. If any student is exposed to a positive case they need to quarantine for at least 10 days and can only return to school if they are symptom-free. We also need to know to help set up any type of remote learning in a timely manner.
  2. Wear a facemask: Face coverings are a proven effective tool in preventing the spread of COVID-19 and are a necessary component for school opening once again and for ensuring the safety of students and staff. As face coverings contribute to slowing the transmission of COVID-19, face coverings will be required inside St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy at all times except while eating or taking a mask break.
  3. Hand Sanitizing and Hand Washing: Hand sanitizing dispensers were installed in all classrooms and throughout high traffic areas. There are increased opportunities for students and staff to wash hands or use hand sanitizer throughout the day.
  4. Sanitizing the School Building: The Academy undergoes deep cleaning and sanitizing utilizing CDC-approved foggers and disinfectants. Continuous cleaning of high-touch surfaces, i.e. handrails, doorknobs, light switches, bathrooms, etc. will take place throughout the day.
  5. Daily Health Screenings for Students: Daily health screenings, including temperature checks, must be completed at home by families. Please note failure to complete this daily 20-second questionnaire will result in your child having to be picked up from school and they cannot return to school until the next day.

Please note that failure to follow these guidelines can result in forfeiture of attending St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy. St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy continues to follow New York State and City protocols regarding COVID. We encourage our families to do the same outside of the school setting as well.

A few items as we begin the week of  Monday, January 10th, 2021.

½ Day and Faculty Professional Day: Just a reminder that this week is a short week and our students have a 4 day weekend that gets kicked off on Thursday 1/13 with a 12pn dismissal. On Friday 1/14 our faculty will participate in a professional development day.   Finally next Monday all schools are off for Martin Luther King Day.

8th Grade High School Acceptances: Congratulations to our 8th grade on beginning to receive your High School decision letters! All Catholic schools in NYC will send out their decision letters this week. We are very proud of all of the accomplishments of our Class of 2022. If parents have any questions, feel free to get in touch with your child’s homeroom teacher, or Mr. Scharbach at admin@stfrancisschoolbh.net

Gym Uniform Days: Just a reminder that as we have some cold weather in the next few weeks that any day the temperature is slated to be 20 degrees or colder, students have the option of wearing their gym uniform. Usually, when there is snow in the forecast the administration will send out a text message notifying families that children can wear their gym uniforms.

8th Grade Dinner Dance Meeting: We are excited to be hosting our dinner dance for Grade 8 in our school gym once again on Friday, June 10th, 2022. Eighth-grade families are invited to join me at the first Dinner Dance meeting on Tuesday, January 11th at 7 pm over Zoom. It’s our hope that we can decide to chair people for various committees, kick off fundraising for the event, and begin to discuss a theme.

I-Ready Diagnostic Test (Week of 1/24): All students in Kindergarten-8th grade will be asked to take the second round of the diagnostic test during the week of January 24th. Students will complete both the i-Ready Math Diagnostic and the Language Arts i-Ready Diagnostic. This will be the second time that the students are taking the diagnostic test and we look forward to sharing their results with you once we have completed the test for all students.

For those who are not sure i-Ready is an online program for reading and mathematics that will help your student’s teacher determine your student’s needs, personalize their learning, and monitor progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows your child’s teacher to meet your student exactly where they are and provides data to increase your student’s learning gains

Learn more about i-Ready by watching this video!

How can parents help their child prepare for an iReady assessment?

Your child’s teacher administering the assessment uses pre-assessment instructions to explain the assessment to students. It is important for parents to encourage their children to try their best on the assessment. Since iReady is a general measure of student ability in mathematics, students perform best on the assessment in the same way they perform best in school—when they have had plenty of rest, attend school regularly, and have eaten.

Stay tuned for next week’s email blast for more information.
