Weekly Update #13 SFDS Week of December 6th

Dear St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy Community,

This past Tuesday Bishop Brennan was installed as the Eighth Bishop of Brooklyn. We are filled with joy to welcome Bishop Brennan back home to New York and look forward to him continuing all the good works that Catholic Schools have shown over the years. Bishop Brennan had plenty of support in the Diocese of Columbus, particularly with students.

John Lavenburg, national correspondent for The Tablet caught up with some Catholic school officials in the Diocese of Columbus and discussed how the bishop’s impact in Ohio will be felt here in Brooklyn and Queens. To see that news story please click the link below.

Second, this past month, the relic belonging to Blessed Carlo Acutis, the first millennial to be considered For Sainthood, has been in the Diocese of Brooklyn. St. Francis Parish is proud to have the relic this upcoming Monday 12/6. Students in Grades 1-8 on Monday will be going to church for a special liturgy and be in the presence of the relic. Tiny trimmings of hair sit at the center of a gold-and-white flower. They belong to the Blessed Carlo Acutis of Italy. From the age of 7, he went to mass every day. Sadly, he passed away in 2006 at just 15 years old from Acute Myeloid Leukemia. The young man displayed such holiness that relics belonging to him started circulating around the globe. We are so honored that our students will get to be in the presence of this relic and learn about the Blessed Carlo Acutis.

Finally, please note that all report cards will be digitally distributed on Monday 12/6 at about 3 pm via the FACTS Parent Portal. This year all conferences will be done in person and will take place on Tuesday 12/7 from 12:45 pm-2:45 pm and from 6 pm-7:30 pm.

Next Monday 12/6 your child’s report card (Pre-K- Grade 8) will be emailed out to parents via the FACTS Family Portal.  Nursery Progress reports will be sent home with your child on Monday 12/6.

Please see below for information on how to sign up for Parent-Teacher Conferences which are on the following day 12/7/21.  Please note that all conferences will be in person and all health guidelines will be followed. This includes that all attendees must wear a mask regardless of their vaccination status.

  • If your child has failed (under 70) you are required to sign up for a conference with the teacher who teaches that subject.
  • If your child has received a grade from 70-79 it is highly recommended that you make an appointment with the teacher who teaches that subject.

Onto some of the upcoming events next week and in the near future

Immaculate Conception Day: Wednesday, December 8th is a Diocesan Holiday for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. This is a Diocesan Holiday so just a reminder that St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is closed.

Christmas Boutique: We are also happy to announce the return of our Christmas Boutique in person this year. The Christmas Boutique for our students will be December 15th- December 17th. Next week a schedule of when classes will be attending the boutique will be given out to help families better plan.

Strategic Planning (2022-2025): During the winter and spring of 2022, our school will once again go through the process of creating a strategic plan.

One of the first steps in this process is completing a SWOT Analysis of all stakeholders. Please see the link below.

Please complete this by Sunday January 2nd.

What is a SWOT Analysis? “SWOT” is an acronym that stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. A SWOT analysis is a structured activity that a group can engage in to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats facing them in any given area.

Why This Step is Important? The Planning for Success SWOT analysis is useful as a first step in a planning or action planning process. The SWOT analysis activity results in a document that participants can reference throughout the planning or action planning process, ensuring that the plan they develop is appropriate for the school context and addresses identified weaknesses and threats. Even more importantly, participants can continue to refer to the opportunities they identified that an improved planning process offers the district or school. This list of opportunities can serve as a set of criteria for the planning process itself, and the facilitator can refer back to and revisit this list of opportunities with the team in order to ensure that the planning process itself is maximizing these opportunities.

Christmas Show: Two weeks ago an email was sent home explaining this year’s Christmas show. Any questions about costumes or dress please contact Ms. Mangano at gmangano@stfrancisschoolbh.net.  To take another look at the information sent in the email please click here.

Please note the following grades and classes are filming this week and should be in costume on that day.

12/7: 3rd Grade and 5B

12/9: 4th and 6th Grade

12/10: 1A, 1B. And Grade 2

Early Childhood Registration: As we begin to prepare for the 2022-2023 school year, we want to ensure that our plans maximize the benefit to your child/children. In the past few weeks we  issued a Google Form of intent for any current Nursery and Pre-K student here at St. Francis who plans on attending St. Francis in 2022 as a Pre-K or Kindergarten student. Those forms were now are due.  As always, we thank you for your dedication and support to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy. If you have any concerns that we may address, please do not hesitate to call us or email us.

Next week an email will be sent home to families of current students to see if any siblings of current students will be joining our Early Childhood. Please fill out all letters of intent as soon as possible  as we will begin open registration in the winter of 2022.  This is especially important to do with our current enrollment numbers.

Toys for Tots: With the Christmas season approaching, as we look forward to the birth of our Lord, we should remember those less fortunate than us. In the spirit of giving, we are asking that students donate a gift for other children. Please bring in an unwrapped toy or game as soon as possible. All donations will go to children in need. Thank you for your generosity. All donations need to be made by Friday 12/17.
