Dear St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy Community,
This weekend we begin the beautiful season of Advent. According to the General Norms for the Liturgical Year, Advent has a twofold nature: It prepares us for Christmas when we recall Christ’s first coming among us, and it is also a time when we look forward to His second coming at the end of the ages. Advent is the season of joyful expectation. As a school community, we will be exploring many avenues during Advent amidst the frantic energy of preparing for December 25. For example, we will be learning about the season of advent, having a special Advent prayer service on Tuesday 11/30, and having our students visit the relic of Blessed Carlos Acutis on 12/6. How wonderful it is that as Christians, we do not liturgically celebrate Christmas until December 25 and after, giving us the opportunity to focus our attention on the true meaning of the season! Of course, there will also be opportunities to have fun as well with the return of our Polar Express, making ornaments for our Christmas Tree in the lobby, and making Christmas crafts as well.
I also begin this week’s email blast with some news. As you may be aware our Assistant Principal Mrs. Faughnan has been out on Maternity leave since August. Mrs. Fuaghnan has decided to not return after her leave is up at the end of December and will be pursuing other avenues in the educational field. We wish her and baby Enya the best during this season of firsts and we wish Mrs. Faughan the best of luck in the future. I would be remiss if I didn’t say thank you to Mrs. Faughan for her two years of service to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy helping me, the teachers, and the school navigate through a Pandemic. The Academy Board of Directors along with myself will begin to investigate the next steps for the administrative team in the coming weeks as we plan not only for the rest of this school year, yet for future years as well.
Onto some of the upcoming events next week and in the near future
Advent Prayer Service: Please join us on Tuesday, November 30th at 6:30 pm in St. Francis de Sales Church for a special Academy Family Advent Prayer Service. All Academy families and their children are invited to attend this special prayer service as we get ready for the coming of the Baby Jesus once again. We hope to see you there.
We are looking for about 4 volunteers, (child and parent) to read at the prayer service. If you are interested in volunteering for this please email Mr. Scharbach at firstname.lastname@example.org
Polar Express (Grades K-4): We are so excited to announce that we will have our Annual Polar Express Night this year in the school Gym on Friday, December 3rd. We will be having two sessions this year. The 1st session will be only for Kindergarten and 1st-grade students from 4 pm-6 pm. Our second session will be for 2nd-4th graders from 6:30 pm-8:30 pm. We are looking forward to this night. The price for each child is $5 and will include Oreo Cookies and Hot Chocolate. All children will need to wear masks during the Polar Express Event. All Aboard!
Picture Day: Please note that individual photos for Nursery-Kindergarten will be on 12/1 and 8th grade will be on 11/30. A separate order form for Nursery-Kindergarten students was sent out and can be found by clicking here.
Students in Grade 8 will receive their order forms when they receive their proofs in a few weeks.
All students in Grades 1-7 who were absent on individual picture day will have their makeup picture taken on Wednesday 12/1.
Franny Fun Run: Again, I can’t say thank you enough for the support of last week’s Franny Fun Run. It is one of the most successful fundraisers we have ever had.
Thank you to all of our sponsors for their support, to the NYPD for keeping our children safe today especially on the racecourse, to Keith Goldberg, and the Edwards and Murphy Families for helping the AFA set up this event, to the AFA executive board and their volunteers. A special thank you to Mrs. Hayden and Mr. Henning, our Fun Run Chairpersons. All of your hard work does not go unnoticed. Finally, thanks so much to the students who participated in this fundraiser and to all the families, their friends, and families who made pledges for this event. We were able to raise over $65,000. Thanks again.
Don’t forget that all who donated and met their goal are allowed to Dress Down on Friday 12/3. Please note that pledges still can occur up until 12/3/21.
Christmas Show: Last week an email was sent home explaining this year’s Christmas show. Any questions about costumes or dress please contact Ms. Mangano at email@example.com. To take another look at the information sent in the email please click here.
Early Childhood Registration: As we begin to prepare for the 2022-2023 school year, we want to ensure that our plans maximize the benefit to your child/children. In the past few weeks, we issued a Google Form of intent for any current Nursery and Pre-K student here at St. Francis who plans on attending St. Francis in 2022 as a Pre-K or Kindergarten student. Those forms are due by Monday, November 29th. As always, we thank you for your dedication and support to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy. If you have any concerns that we may address, please do not hesitate to call us or email us. After Thanksgiving, an email will be sent home to families of current students to see if any siblings of current students will be joining our Early Childhood. Please fill out all letters of intent as soon as possible as we will begin open registration in the winter of 2022. This is especially important to do with our current enrollment numbers.
Report Cards: Please note that all report cards are digitally distributed on Monday 12/6 at about 3 pm via the FACTS Parent Portal. This year all conferences will be done in person and will take place on Tuesday 12/7 from 12:45 pm-2:45 pm and from 6 pm-7:30 pm. On Monday 11/29 we will send out information on signing up for time slots for conferences. All families will have until Sunday 12/5 to sign up for the conferences on Tuesday 12/7. Please note that all conferences will be in person and all health guidelines will be followed. This includes that all attendees must wear a mask regardless of their vaccination status.
Toys for Tots: With the Christmas season approaching, as we look forward to the birth of our Lord, we should remember those less fortunate than us. In the spirit of giving, we are asking that students donate a gift for other children. Please bring in an unwrapped toy or game as soon as possible. All donations will go to children in need. Thank you for your generosity. All donations need to be made by Friday 12/17.
$25,000 Raffle: This weekend the raffle that gives away $25,000 in prizes will be drawn. For those who bought a ticket (tickets are sold out), the drawing will take place at Jamerson’s on Sunday 11/28 from 4 pm-6 pm. Thanks again to all who support our academy.
PDHP Handouts: Thanks again to all who came to the Zoom Meeting two weeks ago to discuss “A Mindful Student” For those who were there and for those who missed the meeting please click below for some of the handouts. https://stfrancisacademybh.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/A-Mindful-Student-Handouts.pdf
Christmas Wreath and Poinsettia Sale: We are partnering up with Shannon’s Florist in Brooklyn to have a limited Christmas Wreath and Poinsettia Nursery Sale. The order form can be found here. All order forms are due by Monday, November 29th at 8am. Please note that no payment is due at this time all families will be billed via their FACTS account. We need to have the order to the florist that morning for delivery on Wednesday (12/1)/Thursday (12/2) of that week. Thanks to Mrs. Rasmussen for coordinating this sale.
