St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy Week of April 15th

Dear Families,


This coming Sunday is Palm Sunday and marks the beginning of Holy Week.  This most holy week reminds Catholics of the last week of Jesus’ life. He was welcomed as a prophet and wise man into Jerusalem, but by the end of the week, He was forsaken by his followers, arrested, scourged, and crucified.


Over the past week many classes began preparing for the closing of Lent and the celebration of Christ’s resurrection through special prayer services and lessons getting them ready for Holy Week. Over the past few weeks our students participated in Lenten Penance Services. As we approach this Holiest time of the year, it is our hope that many families are able to join us for our Passion Play.


Now onto the week of April 15th here at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy


Accreditation: A special thank you to our students, teachers, and families who were so cooperative with the AdvancED Accreditation visit this week. The evaluators were impressed with all that they observed. We will receive our official report before the end of the school year and will share the results with our school community.


Passion Play: Please join us for our annual Passion Play on Tuesday 4/16 where many of our 6th grade students reenact the solemn events that occurred through Jesus’s journey towards death and resurrection.  Thanks again Mrs. Hayes and Mrs. Sullivan to for coordinating this special event. Please join us on Tuesday 4/16 at 1:10pm.


Lenten Soup Dinner:  On Monday, April 15th at 6pm in Msgr. Reddy Hall will be a simple dinner as well as a Lenten Reflection and celebration of the coming Resurrection. To join, it will be $5 a person with a maximum of $20 per family.  All proceeds will go to the WISH.


Oratorical Contest:  Congratulations to MaryKate Corrigan and Mary Youngberg who were the winner and runner up of our first annual Oratorical Contest. All participants did an amazing job memorizing and reciting a 3-6 minute speech. A special thank you to Ms. Re and Mrs. Schmitt for coordinating this contest. Good luck to MaryKate who will represent our school at the Diocesan Oratorical Contest on May 22nd.


8th Grade Bake/Plant Sale: The 8th grade will be selling baked goods and plants after all masses here at St. Francis and in Blessed Trinity on Sunday April 14th. Stop by Fr. Reddy Hall at St. Francis de Sales Parish and the Breezy Stores at Blessed Trinity and and help support the 8th Grade Graduation Dinner Dance!


Spring Book Fair: The Book Fair is coming back! Each class will have a scheduled time to visit the Fair (see below) in the School Gym throughout the 2 days it will be here: April 30th and May 2nd. Thanks to all our book Fair volunteers for their help, especially our Coordinator, Mrs. Rita Martin.

Pop Hop Volunteer: We are very excited for our 4th Annual Pop Hop on Friday May 17th. Tickets for the Pop Hop will go on sale the day we return from Easter Break. The order form for tickets can also be found by clicking here.


Golf Outing: Our 16th Annual Golf and Tennis outing will be held on Friday May 10th 2019 at the Marine Park Golf Course and Belle Harbor Yacht Club


Please consider taking a hole sponsorship with your family name displayed or a special cause or business you may wish to advertise. A beautiful sign will be displayed on a given golf hole or two displaying your support for our great school. More details are in the brochure that was sent home.  This is truly appreciated.

Lastly, please jump in on a great day on the golf course where we enjoy fellow neighbors & friends for a full day of golf followed up by great eats and drinks on the course & post-golf dinner. Put your foursomes together as soon as possible to help secure a successful fundraiser and your foursome on this truly special day. Anyone may drop off monies at the rectory as well.  Thank You.

The success of this day, May 10th, requires all of us even if you do not golf.  As we rely on fundraisers such as the Annual Golf Classic to help support the education and growth of our students here at St. Francis de Sales. Parish Easter Egg Hunt: Tomorrow at 10am, all students in Nursery through Grade 4 are invited to participate in the St. Francis de Sales Parish Easter Egg Hunt in the Prayer Garden. If there is bad weather the hunt will take place in the school gym.




State of the Academy: Please join us on Tuesday April 30th at 7pm for the annual Board of Directors’ State of the Academy. Our Board Members will be providing specific updates on various facets of the Academy including finances, facilities, academics and many more.


Spring Fling: On Friday May 10th we will be hosting our last dance of the year for our 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Tickets are $15 and will include a Pizza Dinner. All tickets need to be bought before Wednesday May 8th.


Spring Concert: Members of the Paul Effman Band, please save the date! Tuesday May 28th at 7pm is our sixth annual St Francis de Sales School Band Spring Concert. Good luck again to those playing in this years Honor Band.  


Summer Uniform: Starting on Monday May 6th students can begin to wear their summer uniforms. This is just a reminder if anyone needs to purchase summer uniforms you should think about ordering them soon. Save the Date! On June 7th 2019, Flynn and O’Hara will be at school to measure students for their uniforms for the 2019-2020 school year.

Box Tops for Education: The last contest of the year is officially beginning.  

What better way to celebrate the June heat than with ice cream?!  The grade that brings in the most box tops will win an ice cream party in June (specific date to be determined).  Please make sure your child’s name and class is on the submission so that the correct class can be credited.   Submitting your box tops in a ziploc bag is the easiest way to hand in.

PS: We are always in need of some parents to help volunteering for our lunch periods. If you are VIRTUS trained and are able to do the lunch duty, we certainly appreciate it. We are continuing to assign lunch duty using a web-based service called Sign Up. It enables those who want to do lunch duty to sign up for slots on specific days with email reminders. It is our hope this will help with the number of cancellations and no shows from families.

Financial Aid for 2019-2020 School Year: Financial aid is available for students in Grades Pre-K to 8, who attend a Brooklyn or Queens Catholic School or Academy.



Step 1: Register your child(ren) in a Catholic elementary academy or school (K – 8) in Brooklyn or Queens.

Step 2: Fill out the online application and submit with required supporting documentation. Please note that there is a non-refundable $30 application processing fee payable by credit card or check. Only one application per family is required.

2019 Scholarship Deadline                                                                                                              April 29, 2019 – New families.

Only completed applications submitted with all required supporting documents will be considered. Completed applications received on or before this date will be considered for the maximum award amount. Completed applications received after this date will still be considered but will not be given priority for the 2019-2020 school year. To apply click below
