SFDS Week of September 9th 2019

Dear Families,

We had a wonderful first week here at the school! Your children arrived on Wednesday with big smiles across their faces. The first couple of days were filled with excitement, introductions, and reuniting with friends, teachers and peers.  As we walked around the building, it was so nice to see both our students and teachers hard at work. And of course, we began the 2019-2020 school year with a joyful Opening of School Mass. I know next week we will hit the ground running for our first full week of school.

September 11th Day of Remembrance Prayer Service: It is difficult to believe that so much time has passed — it seems like yesterday — since we heard those first unbelievable reports that a plane, then another plane had crashed into the buildings of the World Trade Center. The anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, offers a time to remember, to reflect about this unforgettable moment in history, and to reconsider the effect that September 11 has had on our country and the world.

All are invited to join us at 1:15 on Wednesday September 11th to pray as a community and remember the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Weather permitting, we will be gathering in the Prayer Garden, located on the Southeast corner of Rockaway Beach Blvd and Beach 129th Street. If we have inclement weather, we will be meeting at St. Francis de Sales Church.

Meet the Teacher Night K-8: On Thursday September 12th at 7pm, you will have the opportunity to meet your child’s teachers and to get an overview of their child’s educational program. Mark your calendars for this great night to spend time with your child’s teachers and learn about the day in the life of a St. Francis de Sales student.

The schedule of the night is as follows:

6:50pm Doors Open

7:00pm-7:25pm: General Session for entire school in the school gym. We will be trying our best to start on time so not to delay the two teacher sessions.

7:30pm-7:55pm: Teacher Session #1

8:00pm-8:25pm: Teacher Session #2

Please note that Grades 5-8 have a different schedule so parents can see all four teachers.

This night is an information night. If there are any pressing issues or matters that need to be discussed with the teachers please make an appointment to see them at another date. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate individual conversations on Meet the Teacher night, but would be more than happy to set up a time to discuss your child(ren). The teachers will be presenting the same information twice to accommodate those families that may have more than one child in the school.

Catechetical Sunday:  Catechetical Sunday is when those designated to serve as catechists are called forth to be commissioned for their ministry.  Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in passing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel.  All are welcome to join the Saint Francis faculty and Saint Francis Religious Education faculty at this very special liturgy at 9am on Sunday September 15th.

Summer Uniform: This week we were very accepting of students out of uniform yet do expect that corrections be made by next Monday. Just a reminder that summer uniform consists of the following:

Boys and Girls Grades 1-8

Tan uniform shorts, blue golf shirts with the school emblem, black or brown shoe (sneakers and sandals are not permitted; Sperrys/Boat shoes without design or bright colors may be worn with white/black socks), white/black socks and a black or brown belt.

Shorts are to be worn just above the knee. Short shorts are not acceptable.

Pre-K and Kindergarten

Uniform mesh shorts and t-shirts with school emblem, (Pre-K: Maroon, Kindergarten: Gray) white socks, sneakers with velcro or shoelace closures

For more information about uniforms including our winter uniform policy please click here.

Please check with our uniform policy before buying shoes, socks and belts for the 2019-2020 school year.  All shoes should be tie shoes for winter uniform in Grades 1-8.

Pre-K and Nursery Start: This week Pre-Kindergarten and Nursery both begin here at St. Francis. All week Pre-K is in school from 7:55am to 11:50am. Our Nursery program meets on Monday for 30-45 minutes at their assigned time and then begin their regular scheduled time on Wednesday September 11th.

Lunch Duty: We are in need of some parents to help volunteering for our lunch periods. If you are VIRTUS trained and are able to do lunch duty, we certainly appreciate it. We are continuing to assign lunch duty using a web-based service called Volunteer Spot. It enables those who want to do lunch duty to sign up for slots on specific days with email reminders. It is our hope this will help with the number of cancellations and no shows from families.

To sign up for lunch duty please use the website: Lunch Duty Sign Up

2) Review the options listed and choose the spot(s) you like.

Fall Concert Fundraising Meeting: On Tuesday 9/10 at 7pm there will be an opening meeting for any parent who would like to help organize the fall concert on Saturday November 23rd. This year the school has booked an U2 cover band “Unforgettable Fire” All are welcome to make this school fundraiser a great success.

Bald on the Beach: Finally save the date for Bald on the Beach here at St. Francis de Sales on Sunday September 15th from 10am-1pm. Join St. Francis de Sales Parish and our National Junior Honor Society for this special St. Baldrick’s event, and whether you decide to shave your head, volunteer, or donate, we hope you’ll be a part of the excitement! The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-powered charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. Get involved and you’ll be giving hope to infants, children, teens and young adults fighting childhood cancers! For more information, how to donate, or sign yourself or child up to be a shavee please click here.

Please note we will be having a dress down day for a $1 on Friday 9/13  where students will “Go Gold” for Childhood Cancer Research. All proceeds will be donated to St. Baldrick’s. Children are encouraged to wear yellow or gold.

Hurricane Dorian Relief Effort:  As a community, we all know the unimaginable feeling of what it is like to go through a natural disaster, with the effects of Superstorm Sandy, that hit, right here in our own backyard.  With the help of neighbors, near and far, our community was able to find hope and get back to our lives, despite the challenges many of us faced.

Operation Kid Comfort will be collecting gift cards to assist with the Hurricane Dorian relief efforts. We are asking for gift cards such as AMEX, VISA, MasterCard, Home Depot, Target, Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, etc. This way the gift cards can be used at many places or at stores that offer a variety of items that they will need when starting over.  We will be collecting for the month of September. The gift cards will be distributed to the Bahamas and then other areas within the US that are impacted by this storm. For more information about Operation Kid Comfort they can visit: https://www.facebook.com/OperationKidComfort/

All gift cards can be sent to the main office.

Peanut/Nut Free: St. Francis de Sales has been and will continue to be a peanut-free environment because of the increasing number of students with severe allergies. This means that every child is asked to bring snacks and lunches free of any peanuts or nuts. For more information please click here.

Enrichment Programs: We are proud to offer various enrichment opportunities exclusively to the students of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy.
