SFDS Week of October 26th 2020

Dear Families,

Many of our 8th graders from St. Francis de Sales Parish were blessed with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit during their Confirmation on Wednesday. Both ceremonies were beautiful and we are so proud of all of our 8th graders during this very special time in their lives. We very much look forward to seeing our students from Blessed Trinity parish become Confirmed in the Spirit later this school year as well. A special thank you to Mrs. Foti, Mrs. Gigliello, Mrs. McMahon, and Mrs. Hayes for helping to form the student’s faith in their preparation for this special Sacrament over the past two years. Thank you to our Parish Religious Education Director, Mrs. AnneMarie Greene, for organizing the ceremonies as well.

Catholics, in our theology and personal devotions, put a great deal of emphasis on the role and importance of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Very often, our Christian brothers and sisters who belong to other communities do not understand–or strongly disagree with– this devotion. As Catholics, however, we believe that Mary is completely unique in the story of salvation. She was chosen by God to be the Mother of the Savior and because of this; we honor Her and ask for Her prayers through devotions like the Holy Rosary.

Bishop DiMarzio has again asked that we join with other dioceses throughout the country by scheduling our school-wide Rosary Rally for Tuesday, October 27th 2020 at 11:00am in the Church.

Students in grades Kindergarten through second grade and fourth through eighth grade will be participating in this very special service virtually via a live stream.

One of the traditions that our third graders missed out on last school year was that of a May Crowning. This year we are asking our third graders to lead us in this special prayer service. The third graders have the option to wear their First Communion Dress or Suit to school on this day. We encourage the students to wear their dresses and suits yet it is not mandatory.

All Students are asked to bring their rosary beads for this special service on Tuesday.

We have a lot to update this upcoming week:

COVID-19 Health Updates: We want all community members to be safe. Your actions have an impact on us all. Thank you for your attention to these matters and helping out school stay open.

Every student who comes into school each day has to have a health screening completed each and every day. There can be no exceptions to this. Please note that future failure to fill out this daily health screen for your child could mean that your child will have to be sent home. We should have all 435 students health screening each day for students in Nursery-Grade 8. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Please click here for instructions on how to fill out the daily health screen for your child(ren) Any issues please reach out to Mrs. Endall at hendall@stfrancisschoolbh.net

As stated before back on June 24th Governor Cuomo issued Executive Order 205, requiring all travelers coming from states with significant rates of transmission of COVID-19 to quarantine for a 14-day period from the time of their last contact. This includes school age children, The states that are on this list are fluid and can be found by clicking here.

Please note that any child who travels to these states will need to miss coming into the school building for 2 weeks. Please note this is not a DOH Guideline, this is an executive order from the Governor that must be followed. It is the school recommendation that children do not travel to these states at this time

Please be sure to follow all the NYSDOH guidelines when celebrating Halloween.  On Friday, Grades PK-8 may dress down wearing black and orange or a Halloween shirt. No costumes.

Allergies: Over the next two weeks, candy will no doubt be abundant. With this fun and exciting time comes a significant safety concern for many students in our school building. It is important that there is strict avoidance to this peanuts/nuts in order to prevent a life-threatening allergic reaction. We are asking your help to provide the student with a safe school environment. Any exposure to peanuts/nuts may cause a life-threatening allergic reaction that requires emergency medical treatment.

To reduce the chance of this occurring, we are asking that you do not send any peanut or nut containing products to school with your child. If your child has eaten peanuts/nuts before coming to school, please be sure your child’s hands and face have been thoroughly washed before entering the school. We appreciate your support of these procedures.

Picture Day for Grades 2, 3, and 4: This Wednesday 10/28 will be picture day for Grades 2,3, and 4.

Our photographer Harisch Studios is also offering portraits at their Ridgewood, NY studios this year. Book here to have the portrait taken at their studios INSTEAD of school. Once your child is photographed you will be emailed proofs and have the ability to purchase pictures in the following weeks.

We will be working or arranging other days for the other grades in the coming weeks.

8th Grade High School Information: Just a quick reminder for our 8th-grade families that high school information is being updated regularly on our website. . Please make sure you are checking the “TACHS Exam and high school information” page weekly for updated dates and events.

Just a reminder that after you register, but prior to 05:00 PM EST on November 05, 2020, you need to make sure that you enter your child’s three High School choices on tachsinfo.com. Your choices may be revised until November 05. Failure to complete this information prior to November 05, will result in scores being unavailable to your high school choices.

Also last month the academy pushed the extension “Proctorio” on all school devices. Just a reminder this extension is needed to take the TACHS exam. Please begin to have a discussion with your child this weekend of what device he or she will use for the TACHS exam next month. Please note that the device must meet certain requirements and have a working microphone and camera.

Virtual Fall Book Fair: Did you know? Reading just 20 minutes a day exposes your child to about 1.8 million words per year. Reading helps students develop a stronger vocabulary, and in addition, students who read for pleasure average higher grades in English, mathematics, science, and history!

Encourage your child to read books for fun by shopping at our Virtual Scholastic Book Fair. Allow your child to choose the books they want to read! It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level.

We invite you to visit our Online Fair by clicking here.  Our Online Fair is available from 10/19 to 11/2. Remember, all purchases benefit our school. Thank you for supporting our readers!

Calendar Change: We received word today from the Diocesan Superintendent’s office that Wednesday 11/25 will be a Diocesan School Holiday and all schools will be closed. Please enjoy the 5-Day Thanksgiving Holiday.

Have a wonderful weekend.  Thank you as always for your support!
