SFDS Week of October 21st 2019

Dear Families,

Although a short week, we were very busy with field trips, Terranova testing, and our regular instructional time over these last four days! We were so impressed with our 3rd through 8th graders hard work throughout a tough week of TerraNova testing. Our 1st and 2nd graders had a great day trip to the pumpkin patch, while our early childhood grades learned a great deal about Fire Safety. We have a lot to update this upcoming week:

Congratulations and God Bless! On Friday October 25th 2019, many members of St. Francis de Sales Grade 8 will be blessed by the Holy Spirit.

Due to the ceremonies being at 1pm and 4pm, the 8th Grade class is off on Friday the 25th. The rest of the school has an early dismissal at 12pm. Students are expected to be in full winter uniform on Friday 10/25.

May the gifts of the Holy Spirit be with our 8th grade and lead them to be the future leaders of the church. Please also keep in your prayers some of our 8th graders who later in December will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation at Blessed Trinity Parish.

Upcoming Confirmation Practices: Students in 8A (4pm ceremony)  will be joining Mrs. Greene and our parish Religious Education for their Confirmation practice on Monday 10/21 and 10/22 from 7pm-8pm. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Greene.

Rosary Rally: Bishop DiMarzio has again asked that we join with other dioceses throughout the country by scheduling our school-wide Rosary Rally for Thursday October 24, 2019 at 11:00am in the Church. Students in grades 1st grade through eight will be participating in this very special service. Students are asked to bring their rosary beads for this special service. I hope you will be able to attend!

Upcoming Fees: A quick reminder that several fees are coming due in addition to the monthly tuition payment.  Those are the Book & Materials fee, the Technology fee and the Security fee. As a matter of information, you can login to your FACTS  account and request email reminders for upcoming fees if you have not done so already.

2020 Yearbook: We will be selling our yearbooks during the month of October as our team of 8th graders begin to work on the yearbook in the Winter of 2019-2020.

To order a yearbook please print out the following Yearbook-Order-Form and send back to school by Friday 11/1/19.

If you would like to order a school yearbook, (delivery in May) please put your

payment of cash or check (made payable to SFDS, with  SFDS

yearbook on memo line) return it to school with the order form no later than

Friday November 1st. There will be no orders accepted after this date. The

yearbook is a nice way to remember the school year since each class has an

individual page.

Picture Day: In one week, on Monday 10/28 is individual picture day for our Nursery through 7th graders. All those students who are getting pictures may remain in their school uniform or dress up for their picture. Please remind your child that dressing up for pictures is very different than dressing down. All those students who are not getting pictures taken are to be in their full school uniform. If your child has gym on picture day please have them wear sneakers if they are dressing up or bring a change of shoes so they can participate in gym.

Fall Book Fair: Did you know? Reading just 20 minutes a day exposes your child to about 1.8 million words per year. Reading helps students develop a stronger vocabulary, and in addition, students who read for pleasure average higher grades in English, mathematics, science, and history!

Encourage your child to read books for fun by attending our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair. Allow your child to choose the books they want to read! It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level.

Mark your calendar!

Book Fair dates: Tuesday October 22nd and Wednesday October 23rd

Shopping hours:

  • Special activities: Family Day at the Book Fair- Tuesday October 22nd @ 2:30pm-3:30pm: Children can come with members of their family. (Grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents, and younger siblings) All items that were for sale at the book fair will be available to purchase. Mrs. Faughnan will be reading a book to the children at 3pm and Mr. Scharbach will be reading a book to the children at 3:15pm. There will be some light refreshments available and a very special appearance by our very own Franny!

If you are unable to attend the Fair in person, we invite you to visit our Online Fair at scholastic.com/fair. Our Online Fair is available from 10/17 to 10/30. We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit our school. Thank you for supporting our readers!

A very special thank you to Rita Martin for coordinating this year’s fall Book Fair.

Ghana Book Collection:  During our book fair and all of next week we will be collecting gently-used books to send to schools in Ghana. During the week of Oct. 21st – 25th, members of the NJHS will collect the books at the end of each day. We ask that as you may buy a few new books this week at the book fair you think of donating a few gently used ones to this cause. There will be collection boxes in the classrooms and at the book fair as well. A special thank you to 8th grade student Danielle Tansey for coordinating this NJHS service project.

Pre-K Trip: Pre-K families don’t forget that this Thursday 10/24 is the Pre-K trip. For more information please check your classroom dojo or ask your child’s teacher directly.

2019-2020 Family Survey: In an effort to improve system practices, Saint Francis de Sales Catholic Academy conducted a Family Survey in the Fall of 2019. 34% of the families of our school participated.

4.0: Agree

We appreciate your time and all responses. Please note that the responses from this survey are helpful for the academy to make decisions for the 2019-2020 school year and beyond. Please note that many of the short responses that families answered  will be addressed at our next set of Conversation with the Administrative Team on November 5th (7pm) or November 6th (9:30am)

Thanks again.

As you may have noticed, Box Tops is moving to a more digital program, though there are still many products on shelves with Box Tops on them.  Keep clipping those and send them into school. In addition, if you download the Box Tops app, you can also scan that receipt for box tops. Once the receipt is scanned, fill in your child’s name and class in the field for Credit.   Stores are constantly running different promotions. For example, BJs Wholesale is running a special that if you purchase two box tops products, you will get $5.00 (that’s the equivalent to 50 box tops for your child’s class!). You do not need to scan any of your personal information provided that you have the date of purchase included in the scanned receipt.  Receipts need to be scanned within 14 days of purchase. This is such a fast, easy way to support our school.
