Next week we kick off our Terranova testing for grades 3-8. Students must be prepared with sharpened pencils each day. Testing will run for approximately two hours a day from Tuesday, October 15th until Friday October 18th. Students are encouraged to be well rested and eat a good breakfast before the test. While students should not be overly anxious or nervous about this exam, it is important to keep in mind that these scores (Grades 6-8) are sent to the high schools during the application process.
Please take a look at this week’s blast as there is a lot of important information.
On to the next week here at the academy.
Columbus Day: Just a reminder that we are off this Monday October 14th. Enjoy your long weekend!
Grades 1 and 2 Field Trip: As our third through eighth graders are busy this week with Terranovas, our 1st and 2nd graders will have a break from their books as they go on their Field trip. Please refer to the permission slip about this field trip this Wednesday 10/16.
NJHS Event: On October 18th, from 4pm-5:00pm, The National Junior Honor Society will be hosting “Shooting for Pediatric Cancer” for students in Grades 5-8. Those students are asking family and friends to be a sponsor for an amount pledged for each basket made. The total number of baskets will be 30.
For example, if your uncle sponsors $0.50 per basket, and the student gets in 15 baskets, the total pledge owed is $7.50.
Referees will be recording the baskets made by students.
There is a $5.00 entry fee for each student entering the event.
Thank you for all your support. All proceeds are going to the Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
Survey: In an effort to improve system practices, Saint Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is conducting a Family Survey. We value your opinion and ask that you take the time to complete this survey.
As of today we have had 95 out 345 families (28%) complete the survey. Please be assured that your responses to this survey will be anonymous. Your honest opinion is appreciated. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. Please take a few moments before Tuesday October 15th to give some feedback on your experience here at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy.
We appreciate your time and all responses. Please note that the responses from this survey are helpful for the academy to make decisions for the future and for the Accreditation process. Thanks again.
Winter and Summer Uniform: Please note that starting on Tuesday October 15th, winter uniforms should be worn.
As you know our students will have the opportunity to play outside on most days throughout the year. We will soon see seasonal weather and the Academy’s policy is to go outside as long as the temperature is above freezing. As the weather cools down we find that many of our students arrive to school in sweatshirts on days that clearly require heavier jackets. There’s a big difference from walking from the car into the school building than being outside for 25 minutes. Please make sure your children dress weather appropriate. You would be surprised at how quickly our lost and found bins fill up. Please label all jackets, sweatshirts, and coats.
Tablet Subscriptions =Technology for St. Francis: As discussed at the Back to School Night Meeting. The Diocese of Brooklyn is looking for all families to subscribe to the weekly newspaper of the Diocese “The Tablet”.
Through a special grant from DeSales Media Group these subscriptions will allow our school to receive 500 brand new chrome books/iPad to keep our school technology up to date.
Each subscription is $22 for a year. You can subscribe or renew by clicking here.
The best part is that each family that takes a subscription will get a $22 tuition credit on their FACTS account meaning that for our families this will be a free subscription.
As of today we have had 242 families that signed up and need another 19 families to sign up to qualify for the grant.
We do ask that all families take a subscription no later than this weekend. Thanks in advance for helping us with this grant.

Enrichment Programs: We are now in full swing with our enrichment programs. Moving forward please use the school calendar to check dates and times of all enrichment program.
Fall Book Fair: Did you know? Reading just 20 minutes a day exposes your child to about 1.8 million words per year. Reading helps students develop a stronger vocabulary, and in addition, students who read for pleasure average higher grades in English, mathematics, science, and history!
Encourage your child to read books for fun by attending our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair. Allow your child to choose the books they want to read! It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level.
Mark your calendar!

Picture Day: In two weeks, on Monday 10/28 is individual picture day for our Nursery through 7th graders. All those students who are getting pictures may remain in their school uniform or dress up for their picture. Please remind your child that dressing up for pictures is very different than dressing down. All those students who are not getting pictures taken are to be in their full school uniform. If your child has gym on picture day please have them wear sneakers if they are dressing up or bring a change of shoes so they can participate in gym.
