SFDS Week of May 6th 2019

Dear Families,

In the Catholic faith, the month of May is traditionally dedicated to Mary, our Blessed Mother.  There are many ways to celebrate this particular devotion. We honor our Blessed Mother in a special way during the annual May Crowning prayer service. Our second grade students lead the entire community in this very special service. Please join the SFDS community on Thursday May 23rd at 1:30pm for this special prayer service.

 

Now onto some exciting things happening in the upcoming week of May 6th:

 

Sacrament of First Holy Eucharist: Congratulations to all of our 2nd graders who will receive the sacrament of Eucharist for the first time this weekend. We are so proud of all of our 2nd graders who are now closer to Jesus. A special thank you to their teachers Mrs. Schmitt and Mrs. O’Malley for preparing them for this special moment.  

 

Summer Uniform: Starting on Monday May 6th students can begin to wear their summer uniforms. This is just a reminder if anyone needs to purchase summer uniforms you should think about ordering them soon. Save the Date! On June 7th 2019, Flynn and O’Hara will be at school to measure students for their uniforms for the 2019-2020 school year.

 

½ Day: Just a reminder that Wednesday May 8th is a half day so that we can meet with teachers for a Faculty Meeting. Students will be dismissed at 12 noon. Students may dress down. The PM Nursery has no class.

 

8th Grade Clothing Drive: Just a reminder that the 8th grade is doing a Clothing Drive on Monday 5/6 from 2pm-3pm and 6pm-8pm in the Small Hall.  Donations can include clothing, bedding, towels, stuffed animals, etc. Please place shoes, boots, sneakers, etc. in a separate bag.

 

Suessical Tickets: St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy middle school students will unlock the imaginations of Rockaway citizens when they bring the Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie La Bird, the Whos in Whoville and other Seuss favorites to life with their production of Seussical JR., it was announced today by the Cat in the Hat.

“Now, I’m here, there is no telling what may ensue with a Cat such as me, and a Thinker like you!,” says the Cat in the Hat.

Horton will hear a Who and cheerful chaos will ensue when St. Francis de Sales presents Seussical JR. on Saturday June 1st at 1:30pm and 6:30pm and on Sunday June 2nd at 1:30pm at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy Gym (219 Beach 129th Street, Belle Harbor, NY 11694) Tickets are now on sale. Tickets are $10 for all adults, $5 for children under 14 and $3 for all SFDS Students. More information to follow.

Nursery Mother’s Day Tea: Just a reminder that our Nursery moms are invited to a Mother’s Day tea on Friday May 10th. You should have already received the invitation and reminder from Mrs.Troia. The Nursery students are very excited to shower their moms with a special song and gifts!

 

Spring Book Fair: Another wonderful Book Fair has come to a close here at St. Francis de Sales. A very special thank you to Rita Martin, Louann Mannino and all of the fantastic volunteers for their hard work in setting up and running the event for the last three days. If you were unable to get to the Book Fair, or the book you were interested in was sold out, our Online Book Fair will be open through May 8th. You can shop by clicking here

State of the Academy: Please join us on Tuesday May 7th (Date Change) at 7pm for the annual Board of Directors’ State of the Academy. Our Board Members will be providing specific updates on various facets of the Academy including finances, facilities, academics and many more.

 

Brooklyn Cyclone Night: Just a reminder that Friday 5/10 is the last chance for your family to join us for our annual night with the Brooklyn Cyclones! St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is participating in School Spirit Night fundraiser at MCU Park on June 17th at 7pm. If you would like to attend, send the cut off at the bottom of the flyer with your payment  to the school office. While we cannot guarantee any seating arrangements, we suggest you send one order to cover everyone in your group. This way, it is more likely that all of your seats will be together. Plus don’t miss the exciting pregame: Collars vs. Scholars II. Mr. Scharbach along with other Catholic School Principals will be facing off against Father Sean Suckiel and other diocesan priests in a pregame softball game. Watch the principals take the mound to try and revenge last years loss to the priests!

 

2019 St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy Family Survey: In an effort to improve system practices, Saint Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is conducting a Family Survey. We value your opinion and ask that you take the time to complete this survey.

 

Just a few weeks ago we went through the AdvanceED Accreditation. This Accreditation Process helps us make the most of their talents and resources. The AdvancED Performance Accreditation requires that institutions must:

  •     Meet the AdvancED Standards and accreditation policies.
  •     Demonstrate quality assurance through internal and engagement reviews.
  •     Engage in continuous improvement.

 

It is helpful to the academy board of directors and administrative team to have families complete this survey.

Spring Fling: On Friday May 10th we will be hosting our last dance of the year for our 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Tickets are $15 and will include a Pizza Dinner. All tickets need to be bought before Wednesday May 8th.

 

Pop Hop: We are very excited for our Annual Pop Hop on Friday May 17th. Tickets for the Pop Hop are on sale and we are asking that all orders come in no later than Monday May 6th.  The order form for tickets can also be found by clicking here.

 

SAVE THE DATES

 

Spring Carnival: The National Junior Honor Society is sponsoring our annual Spring Carnival to be held on Friday May 17th, 2019. Nursery through Grade 5 are invited to participate in the activities created and operated by the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Admission to the carnival will be $1.00 per child, and there will be snacks and drinks available for purchase for $1.00 each on that day. To purchase a ticket, please send in a dollar in an envelope labeled with your child’s name and class and the word’s “Spring Carnival” on it. Tickets will be given to the teachers to distribute the day of the Carnival. Due to space, and time limitations, this carnival is open to students only. Thank you to Ms. Killian for coordinating this fun event!

 

Science Fair: Wednesday May 22nd, our students in grades 5-7 will be displaying their projects at our annual Science Fair, while our 8th grade students will be presenting their final religion projects on the novel, “The Shack”  Families are invited to look at our students’ work from 10:00am-12:00pm and 1pm-2pm.

 

Outdoor Movie Night: On Friday May 24th, we will be hosting another Outdoor Movie Night. This year we will be showing Ralph Wrecks the Internet. Gates open at 7:45, Movie starts promptly at 8:15. Come celebrate the start of Memorial Day weekend with us! Snacks will be sold. Don’t forget to bring your own beach chair or towel!

 

Spring Concert: Members of the Paul Effman Band, please save the date! Tuesday May 28th at 7pm is our annual St Francis de Sales School Band Spring Concert. Don’t forget that this Tuesday begins the special  schedule for lessons as they students prepare for their concert.

 

Memorial Day Parade: Please save the date for Monday May 27th and join the Academy community and Franny our Mascot to march in the Memorial Day Parade. We start the day off with mass at 10:30am which is followed with a short march to 121st street. We would love to see everyone come out for this special event.

 

Art Show: Please join us on June 5th at 6pm for our 3rd annual Art Show! Ms. Mangano and our students have worked tirelessly in preparation for a truly superb art gallery display. Fundraising Corner

This year St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy has a goal of raising $150,000 throughout the school year. We are happy to say we are well on our way of meeting our goal and have already raised over $118,000. Thanks again to all who make that event such a success each year.

Box Tops for Education: The last contest of the year is officially beginning.  

What better way to celebrate the June heat than with ice cream?!  The grade that brings in the most box tops will win an ice cream party in June (specific date to be determined).  Please make sure your child’s name and class is on the submission so that the correct class can be credited.   Submitting your box tops in a ziploc bag is the easiest way to hand in.

PS: We are always in need of some parents to help volunteering for our lunch periods. If you are VIRTUS trained and are able to do the lunch duty, we certainly appreciate it. We are continuing to assign lunch duty using a web-based service called Sign Up. It enables those who want to do lunch duty to sign up for slots on specific days with email reminders. It is our hope this will help with the number of cancellations and no shows from families.
