Dear Academy Families,
In this Sunday’s reading we hear from the apostle John, Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. (1 Jn 3:18-24)
If we cannot live the Gospel and the words of Christ then speaking them is immaterial. Children must see examples of Christlike actions around them to fully understand what it means to follow Christ. This of course begins at home with families who are committed to living like Christ. A child’s education is the next opportunity to experience role models of Christ. Children who attend a Catholic school like St. Francis are less likely to experience behavior problems or observe negative behaviors in their classrooms. Having positive peer and teacher role models makes a significant difference in a child’s formative years. We continue this year to give thanks for the gift of Catholic Education.
Second, this weekend our second graders begin to receive their special sacrament at Blessed Trinity Parish. They’ve worked and prayed all year in preparation for their First Holy Communion. These students will be followed on May 8th and May 22nd by students receiving the sacrament at St. Francis de Sales Parish. We know that whatever day it is it will be a wonderful day for all our second-grade families. We will keep them in our prayers for this very special and important moment in their life. A very special thank you to both Mrs. O’Malley and Mrs. Cronin along with Mrs. Marquadt and Mrs. Beehler for preparing the children for this special day. Please stay tuned for next week when we will be in touch about this year’s school May Crowning on May 25th.
Finally, we were so happy to welcome more students into our school this week each day of in-person instruction. We do ask that all families respect the parking rules on the streets surrounding our school as more students enter and leave the building each day. Do not double park cars because it is extremely dangerous for students and family members to walk to and from school. Also please do not block the fire lanes on the beach blocks by parking on both sides of the streets. Please park your car, enjoy the nice weather, and walk your children to and from their pick-up and drop-off places. Additionally, everyone in the schoolyard is required to wear a face-covering as we still have a large gathering each day at dismissal.
Now onto the week of May 3rd here at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy. Don’t forget that Friday, April 30th is our last Professional Day for Teachers and school is closed for all students.
Math State Exam Update: We successfully administered the NYS ELA test last week and this week. We now turn our attention to the NYS Math test in Grades 4,6 and 7. This year, the Mathematics exam for grades 3 through 8 will be multiple choice only. The test will be one day only and session 1 will be shortened by eliminating the field questions. We will continue Computer-Based Testing for grades 6 and 7 this year, while 4th grade will continue to take paper-based tests. The computer-based test will have the same questions as the paper version but students will take the test on their Chromebooks. All we ask is that our students are focused and we know everyone will give their very best.
The Math state exam is scheduled as follows
Wednesday, May 5th- Grade 4
Monday, May 10th -Grade 7
Tuesday, May 11th – Grade 6
Please make sure that your children get a good night’s sleep, have their Chromebook fully charged (Grades 6 and 7), and are well rested the night before.
Summer Uniform: Starting on Monday, May 3rd students can begin to wear their summer gym uniforms. Please remember that if wearing the gym uniform students must wear sneakers with white or black solid socks. Please note that starting in the fall of 2021 all students will be required once again to wear the dress uniform 4 days a week with them wearing their gym uniform on their gym day. More information on ordering uniforms will come in the following weeks.

Blue and Gold Day: In two weeks we plan on holding our annual Blue and Gold Day. Grades K-4 are scheduled on Wednesday 5/12 and Grades 5-8 are scheduled on Friday 5/14. Please note that we do have a rain date of Friday 5/21 in case either day has inclement weather. This event is for students only. The students may dress down in the color of their team. Just a reminder as in years past no student should have any face paint or colored hair for this event. Each student will be provided with a special SFDS 2021 Blue and Gold Mask to wear for the day. We do ask for your cooperation with these directives so that we can keep this tradition going for the students of our school.
