SFDS Week of May 20th 2019

Dear Families,

Rain, rain, go away! I know I am not alone when I say we are ready for some sunshine! We have so many great events planned for the next couple of weeks. Let’s hope Mother Nature cooperates like she did for our Spring Carnival.


Thanks to all who came out for this week’s State of the Academy. Please click here for the presentation that was given by the Board of Directors. Some of the announcements discussed were next year’s tuition schedule, which can be found by clicking here, the exciting news of opening up a third 1st grade class, and the sad news that our Assistant Principal, Mrs. Martello, will be leaving at the end of this school year. It goes without saying that Mrs. Martello will be greatly missed here at St. Francis. Over the past 5 years, she has helped grow our Literacy curriculum, helped us become a 1:1 school and has been a huge part of our school community. We wish her all the luck in her future endeavors. St. Francis de Sales will always be a home for her.


Now onto some exciting things happening in the upcoming week of May 20th and beyond:


May Crowning: This week on Thursday May 23rd, the 2nd Grade Class will be taking part in the school’s annual May Crowning. Students will also be photographed and have a special Communion Brunch. Our 2nd grade parents are invited to join their children and the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy Community for the May crowning at 1:30pm in St. Francis de Sales Church. We are asking that all 2nd grade students to come to school dressed in their Communion attire. Please send in a large shirt to wear over their clothing. Please remember all students should have dress shoes.


There will be a SFDS Parish May Crowning this Sunday May 19th at the 10:30am Mass as well. The children who just received First Holy Communion are invited to come and be part of the processions to crown Mary in the Grotto (weather permitting).


Science Fair: On Wednesday May 22nd, our students in grades 5-7 will be displaying their projects at our annual Science Fair, while our 8th grade students will be presenting their final religion projects on the novel, “The Shack”  Families are invited to look at our students’ work from 10:00am-12:00pm and 1pm-2pm. A special Thank you to Mrs. Gigliello, Mrs. Foti, and Mrs. Norton for coordinating this annual event.


Diocesan Oratorical Contest: This Wednesday, May 22nd Mary Kate Corrigan will be representing our school at the Diocesan Oratorical Contest. We wish her lots of luck and we know she has been well prepared by Mrs. Re and Mrs. Schmitt.


Outdoor Movie Night: On Friday May 24th, we will be hosting another Outdoor Movie Night. This year we will be showing Ralph Wrecks the Internet. Gates open at 7:45, Movie starts promptly at 8:15. Come celebrate the start of Memorial Day weekend with us! Snacks will be sold. Don’t forget to bring your own beach chair or towel!


Seussical Tickets: St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy middle school students will unlock the imaginations of Rockaway citizens when they bring the Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie La Bird, the Whos in Whoville and other Seuss favorites to life with their production of Seussical JR., it was announced today by the Cat in the Hat.

“Now, I’m here, there is no telling what may ensue with a Cat such as me, and a Thinker like you!,” says the Cat in the Hat.

Horton will hear a Who and cheerful chaos will ensue when St. Francis de Sales presents Seussical JR. on Saturday June 1st at 1:30pm and 6:30pm and on Sunday June 2nd at 1:30pm at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy Gym (219 Beach 129th Street, Belle Harbor, NY 11694) Tickets are now on sale. Tickets are $10 for all adults, $5 for children under 14 and $3 for all SFDS Students. More information to follow.

Paperwork: If any child is transferring from St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy for the 2019-2020 school year, most likely their records will need to be sent to their new school. Please request that as soon as possible as many schools are closed for the summer and ask for that information before the end of June.


8th grade Raffle: Congratulations to our winner of the $1000 8th grade raffle Maureen Fiero! Thank you to all who helped support this ongoing fundraiser for our 8th graders’ Graduation Dinner Dance. Your generosity is much appreciated!


Conversation with the Principal:  Please join me for our Conversation with the Principal on Friday May 1 at 9:30am or Thursday May 30th at 7pm.  We will be running these meetings a little differently than in years past. I would like to utilize the time to answer questions, hear feedback, and listen to any concerns that parents might have, there will be no set agenda. All are welcome!




Early Childhood Information Nights: On Monday June 3rd at 6pm, we will be hosting Nursery and Pre-K information night, and on Wednesday June 5th at 6pm, we will invite our incoming Kindergarten parents to join us for the Kindergarten Information Night. On both evenings, the early childhood teachers will be sharing all the details of what is in store for your children who are entering their early childhood years. Parents will be receiving supply lists and summer ideas during this meeting as well. We hope to see everyone there.


Uniform Measurement Day: On Friday June 7th, Flynn & O’Hara will be here at St. Francis to measure students for next year’s uniform. Order forms will be sent out next week.


Grade 4 and 8 Science: Grade 4 &  8 will be completing their Science Performance exams on Tuesday May 28th. We encourage the students to get a good night’s sleep and eat a hearty breakfast on the mornings of their exams.


Spring Concert: Members of the Paul Effman Band, please save the date! Tuesday May 28th at 7pm is our annual St Francis de Sales School Band Spring Concert.There is no fee for admission into the concert. Don’t forget that this Tuesday continues the special  schedule for lessons as they students prepare for their concert.


Memorial Day Parade: Please save the date for Monday May 27th and join the Academy community and Franny our Mascot to march in the Memorial Day Parade. We start the day off with mass at 10:30am which is followed with a short march to 121st street. We would love to see everyone come out for this special event.


Art Show: Please join us on June 5th at 6pm for our 3rd annual Art Show! Ms. Mangano and our students have worked tirelessly in preparation for a truly superb art gallery display. Fundraising Corner

This year St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy has a goal of raising $150,000 throughout the school year. We are happy to say we are well on our way of meeting our goal and have already raised over $138,000. Thanks again to all who make that event such a success each year.

Box Tops for Education: The last contest of the year is officially beginning.  

What better way to celebrate the June heat than with ice cream?!  The grade that brings in the most box tops will win an ice cream party in June (specific date to be determined).  Please make sure your child’s name and class is on the submission so that the correct class can be credited.   Submitting your box tops in a ziploc bag is the easiest way to hand in.

PS: We are always in need of some parents to help volunteering for our lunch periods. If you are VIRTUS trained and are able to do the lunch duty, we certainly appreciate it. We are continuing to assign lunch duty using a web-based service called Sign Up. It enables those who want to do lunch duty to sign up for slots on specific days with email reminders. It is our hope this will help with the number of cancellations and no shows from families.
