SFDS Week of May 17th 2021

Dear Academy Families,

Congratulations to the Blue team. Although different it was great to see the kids have a great time in the schoolyard for Blue and Gold Day and keep that tradition alive. Thanks again to Mr. Neiswenter for making it happen.

On Thursday we celebrated the Solemnity of the Ascension of Jesus to Heaven. “Jesus said to his disciples: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved…But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.”There is a misconception that this is a sad time as He is leaving the earthly world, but it is a joyful time as we celebrate His triumph over death and return to the Father.

Jesus tells the disciples that the Holy Spirit will come upon them to baptize them, allowing them to fully proclaim the Word of God. The Gospel leaves us with an important message about the disciples’ purpose. The disciples were tasked to go into the world and share the Gospel with everyone; “every creature.” Jesus does not tell the disciples that His words only apply to some, He wants to everyone to have the opportunity to hear His words. The Gospel reading demonstrates the need to evangelize not only to Baptized individuals but to all so that they might have the knowledge of Christ to be baptized.

Catholic Schools welcome students of all faiths and cultures and we believe that everyone should have the experience of knowing and loving Christ whether they are baptized or not in the hope that unbaptized students will one day join us in the faith. Like the early disciples, we are blessed with teachers who seek to spread the message of the Gospel to all students. As we come to the end of the Easter season let us give thanks for the gift of a Catholic education.

Now onto the week of May 17th here at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy.

State of the Academy: Thank you again to the over 100 attendees who came to our annual State of the Academy on Tuesday night. Just a reminder that we did send out a recording of the meeting on Wednesday morning that will be available to watch until Tuesday 5/18. To see the PowerPoint presentation from Tuesday night please click here

Family Survey: In an effort to improve system practices, Saint Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is conducting a Family Survey.  We value your opinion and ask that you take the time to complete this survey. This survey is similar to the survey that was given last year before we had to switch to remote learning.

In order to complete the survey, please go to: http://www.advanc-ed.org/survey/public/6103633

Please be assured that your responses to this survey will be anonymous.  Your honest opinion is appreciated. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Altar Servers: Last weekend the Diocesan Guidelines once again allowed for Altar Servers to serve. We were so happy to have some of our students serve last weekend’s First Communion and this week’s Holy Day. Father Jim from St. Francis de Sales Parish is beginning to ask students in Grades 4-7 if they would like to be trained to be an altar server for the next school year. If your child would like to be apart of this ministry please send a note into your child’s homeroom teacher or email Mrs. Endall at hendall@stfrancisschoolbh.net no later than Tuesday 5/18. Father Jim will be in touch about a training schedule soon after. Current altar servers will be contacted soon about a summer schedule of Sunday masses.

First Communion and May Crowning: Congratulations and God bless to those children who received First Holy Communion the last two weekends. Those second graders scheduled to receive First Holy Communion on Saturday, May 22, 2021  at 1:00pm have practice on Tuesday May 18, 2021 at 3:30-4:30 pm in church. Please bring your child’s banner to practice.

St. Francis de Sales Parish will be having a May Crowning on Sunday 5/23 at the 10 am Mass. They would love to see those children who received Holy Communion sit in the reserved section in the front of church. We all should be thankful for the guidance of the Blessed Mother over this past year and honor her by crowning her. The children in attendance will be asked to participate in the procession, wearing their communion outfits is encouraged, but not mandatory.

Finally, next Tuesday 5/25 at 1:30pm is the academy’s annual May Crowning at 1:30pm being led by our second graders. Just a reminder to all second-grade families that only two guests can attend this special prayer service. Everyone else is invited to tune into the live stream on our school website and Facebook.

Dress Down Day: On Friday, May 28th we are having a Dress Down Day. It is $1 or a Donation to help two SFDS Alumni

Robert Shaw and Jamie Franchock from the Class of 2019. They are off to Tennessee to build homes and support those in need and their families through the Companions of St. Francis Xavier Service and Immersion Program (CFX)

Red, White, and Blue is the Dress Down Theme. We thank you in advance for your generosity! Robert and Jamie (Class of 2023) will be attending the CFX service trip to Tennessee with Xavier High School in August.

Records for Next Year:  If any child is transferring from St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy for the 2021-2022 school year, most likely their records will need to be sent to their new school. Please request that as soon as possible yet no later than the end of May as many schools are closed for the summer and ask for that information before we break for summer.

Tuition: Just a reminder that this week on Monday 5/17 the final tuition payment is due for the 2020-2021 school year.  We do ask that all tuition arrears are settled over the next few weeks. We will continue the payment schedule of tuition for the 2021-2022 school year from August 2021-May 2022. Any tuition questions please contact our bookkeeper Marguerite Kazalski at mkazalski@stfrancisschoolbh.net

Bagel Day: Just a reminder that this upcoming Monday is the last bagel day for Grades 5-8. Grades 1-4 will still have two more bagel days on Monday 5/24 and 6/7. We look forward to next school year continuing our Bagel Mondays and our Pizza Thursday/Fridays along with our monthly chicken finger days. Stay tuned this summer for more information.

Financial Aid for the 2021-2022 School Year: Futures in Education is proud to administer several scholarship programs, providing partial tuition assistance for families demonstrating financial need, and who meet eligibility requirements, to attend a Catholic academy or school in Brooklyn or Queens. To apply or get more information please click here. Just a reminder that the deadline for returning families who received an award in the previous academic year has passed. The deadline for new families (students who did not receive an award in the previous academic year) is May 31st. Applications will continue to be accepted beyond the deadline; those who have a completed application by May 31st will receive priority.

We are excited to share that awarding has started for returning families with completed applications. New families will begin to receive decision notifications as of June 1st, on a rolling basis until funding is exhausted.

Applications will only be considered completed when all required supporting documents have been submitted.  Awards will begin with applications that were completed by the deadline and will continue on a rolling basis as available funding allows.

Have a great week. Be safe and stay healthy.
