SFDS Week of May 13th 2019

Dear Families,

This weekend, we take some time to honor and say thank you to the special women in our lives. A mother’s love can take many shapes and forms, but no matter what, remains unwavering and unconditional. Thank you to all of the wonderful ladies who help raise the children of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy; you are so appreciated.

Now onto some exciting things happening in the upcoming week of May 13th:

State of the Academy: Please join us on Tuesday May 14th at 7pm for the annual Board of Directors’ State of the Academy. Our Board Members will be providing specific updates on various facets of the Academy including finances, facilities, academics and many more.

Family Survey: In an effort to improve system practices, Saint Francis de Sales Catholic Academy conducted a Family Survey in the Spring of 2019. 34% of the families of our school participated.

Please click here for Summarized counts of responses to the 2019 Family Survey. This survey used a Likert scale with the following ratings.

5.0: Strongly Agree

4.0: Agree

3.0 Nuetral

2.0: Disagree

1.0: Strongly Disagree

We appreciate your time and all responses. Please note that the responses from this survey are helpful for the academy to make decisions for the 2019-2020 school year. Thanks again.

Terranovas Grades K-2: This week, we are implementing TerraNova testing in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd  grades. From May 15th-May 23rd the Terra Nova assessment series will be administered to students in grades Kindergarten  through Grade 2. It is important that all academy families understand the rationale behind administering a standardized assessment.  The word test means different things to different students.  Some students embrace the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge; other students become apprehensive and fearful at the prospect of taking a test.  There is a difference between testing and assessing.  An assessment is an educational tool to measure the present status of a student’s skills.  The Terra Nova is designed to measure concepts, processes, and objectives taught throughout the nation.  Terra Nova results are used to: analyze strengths and weaknesses of a student’s achievement in each content area; plan for further instruction; plan for curriculum development; and to report progress to parents.

The assessments will be done over the course a few 3-4 days for about 30 minutes each day, and will be guided by your students’ classroom teachers. As always, please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have an issue, or question.  We are only a phone call or email away.

Spring Carnival: The National Junior Honor Society is sponsoring our annual Spring Carnival to be held on Friday May 17th, 2019. Nursery through Grade 5 are invited to participate in the activities created and operated by the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Admission to the carnival will be $1.00 per child, and there will be snacks and drinks available for purchase for $1.00 each on that day. To purchase a ticket, please send in a dollar in an envelope labeled with your child’s name and class and the word’s “Spring Carnival” on it. Tickets will be given to the teachers to distribute the day of the Carnival. Due to space, and time limitations, this carnival is open to students only. It is a dress down day. However, tanks, sleeveless jerseys, short shorts, flip flops or sandals will not be allowed. Please be sure that your child comes in dressed correctly on Friday as it will help reduce the office’s morning phone calls. ALL students should have sunscreen on before coming to school. Thank you to Ms. Killian for coordinating this fun event!
