SFDS Week of March 18th 2019

Dear Families,

 

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

 

It’s hard to believe that we are officially in Trimester 3. The year continues to fly by! On Wednesday March 20th, report cards will be sent home with your child(ren). Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday March 21 from 12:45-2:45 for our afternoon session and from 6-7:30 for our evening session. We will assume that families who did not sign up by the 3/15/19 deadline are not coming to either session. You will not be able to confer with your child’s teacher that afternoon or evening.

 

Since parents of students in 5th Grade through 8th Grade sometimes need to see multiple teachers (not always their child’s homeroom teacher) due to this we do not schedule conferences. All teachers will be available on a first come first serve basis at the above listed times.

 

This week final tuition arrears reports went out for those families that are in arrears. Please be mindful of keeping your account up to date for all outstanding tuition or fees. Please remember that report cards are not distributed unless your account is up to date as of 2/15/19. Any issues please feel free to be in touch.  

 

Just remember that Thursday 3/21 is a half day with a 12 noon dismissal.

 

$1 Dress Down: On Tuesday March 19th, all students are welcome to dress down, wearing RED, for $1. All proceeds will go to Hemophilia research.

 

Math-a-thon All permission slips and booklets have been handed out to students who are looking to participate in this year’s Math-A-Thon. All money raised goes directly to supporting St. Jude and their work with children with pediatric cancer. For several years, we have been a top 100 school in fundraising across the country. Honor Band: Congratulations to Emma Bodnar, Isabelle McLoughlin, Claire Mehta, Christian Murray, and Katherine Rudolph for being selected to join the New York City Catholic School Honor Band Concert. Claire will perform at St. Francis Prep on March 24th. The New York City Catholic School Honor Band represents the “best of the best” from all the Catholic School in the Diocese of Brooklyn and Archdiocese of NY.

 

Haircuts: Just a reminder from our Family Handbook: “Both boys and girls are to have moderate, neat hairstyles. Boys may not have hair covering

their ears.” Please keep these guidelines in mind when we get ready for our spring haircuts.

 

Card Party: Dust off your Cowboy Hats and Put On Your Dancin’ Boots!

St. Francis de Sales Card Party Committee Presents  “The Blue Jean Ball” Friday, March 29th, 2019, 7PM – 11PM Doors open at 6:30pm in the Gym, Complimentary Coffee and Cake, BYOB.

One of the most anticipated and biggest prizes every year at the Card Party is the

Tuition Raffle for one student for the 2019-2020 school year. Please think about supporting this raffle and get a chance of winning a free tuition for one child. (Winner need not be present). PDHP Parent Workshop: Please join us this Monday March 18th for our reschedule Family Fun Night! Looking for a way to spend some quality time with your children? Look no further! Join us for Family Fun Night For Grades K-6,  hosted by The Program for the Development of Human Potential. (PDHP) Families will participate in enjoyable cooperative games and low impact activities designed to help parents and children play, work, and communicate better.

 

Mother-Son Bowling: This is the last call for any Kindergarten through fifth graders to attend the Mother-Son bowling event in two weeks. This event will take place on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 1:30 pm at Woodmere Lanes. There are just a few spots available.  The cost is $20/per bowler and it includes light fare & photo booth. State Exams: In a few weeks, the New York State English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics Tests will be administered to students. We will continue Computer Based Testing for grades 6 and 7 this year, while 4th grade will continue to take paper-based tests. The computer-based

test will have the same questions as the paper version but students will take the

test on their Chromebooks. Below you will find a summary of the changes that were made to the English Language Arts and Mathematics Tests over the past several years.

  • Fewer testing sessions. Last year, the ELA and Math Tests were reduced from three test sessions per subject to only two sessions per subject, meaning each subject will have two days of testing instead of three. With fewer test sessions, each test will have fewer questions than in past years, lessening test fatigue for students and better enabling them to demonstrate what they know and are able to do.
  • The tests continue to be untimed so students who are still working on their exams will be allowed to continue to work, within the confines of the regular school day. Students who finish may be permitted to hand in their test materials (or submit the test if testing on computer) and leave the room. If so, students should exit quietly so they do not disturb any students still working.
  • Test questions reviewed and written by New York State Teachers. Hundreds of New York State educators were involved in creating and reviewing questions for 2019 ELA and Math Tests and selecting the questions for the test forms.

 

Greybeards vs. Harlem Magic Masters: Just a reminder that next Friday 3/22 is the annual Graybeards Basketball Event in the school gym. The event begins at 6:30; hope to see you all there! Information went home last week.

 

Spring Concert: Members of the Paul Effman Band, please save the date! Tuesday May 28th at 7pm is our sixth annual St Francis de Sales School Band Spring Concert.

 

Summer Uniform: Starting on Monday May 6th students can begin to wear their summer uniforms. This is just a reminder if anyone needs to purchase summer uniforms you should think about ordering them soon. Save the Date! On June 7th 2019, Flynn and O’Hara will be at school to measure students for their uniforms for the 2019-2020 school year.

 

Fundraising Corner

Cookbook: St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is preparing a wonderful custom cookbook featuring favorite recipes from our students, faculty, staff, and families. Include those favorite family recipes that have been passed down so you can share them too.  Feel free to include your own recipes, published recipes, maybe you have a favorite recipe from a local restaurant they would share. The cookbook will be professionally published, and it is certain to become a treasured keepsake. For more information, please click here.

 

Babysitting Night: The 8th Grade will be organizing a fun night for our Pre-K through 4th grade students . This SFDSCA 8TH Grade Dinner Dance Fundraiser allows you to enjoy two and a half hours kid free! Friday, April 5th, 2019 from  6:30pm-9pm. Open to kids PreK- 4th grade. This opportunity is open to SFDSCA families ONLY.

 

Your kids will be supervised by school staff, 8th grade students, and 8th grade parent volunteers (VIRTUS trained). Children will be treated to a movie, games, crafts, and organized sports and activities. We will provide the children with a snack (drinks and chips, etc.). Please be sure your child has dinner prior to coming

 

The fee is $25 for the first child and each additional child is $5. Please submit the form below with payment in an envelope marked “8th Grade Babysitting Night”. Please RSVP BY March 29, 2019.  We cannot accept registration after the 29th for planning reasons. You will NOT be able to pay the night of the event. Save the Date: Our 16th Annual Golf Outing will be held on Friday May 10th 2019 at the Marine Park Golf Course. Get those foursomes ready so we can have a great year! More information to follow.

 

Fundraising Update: This year St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy has a goal of raising $150,000 throughout the school year. We are happy to say we are well on our way of meeting our goal and have already raised over $45,000. For more information on how this year’s fundraising have done please click here.

PS: We are always in need of some parents to help volunteering for our lunch periods. If you are VIRTUS trained and are able to do the lunch duty, we certainly appreciate it. We are continuing to assign lunch duty using a web-based service called Sign Up. It enables those who want to do lunch duty to sign up for slots on specific days with email reminders. It is our hope this will help with the number of cancellations and no shows from families.

Financial Aid for 2019-2020 School Year: Financial aid is available for students in Grades Pre-K to 8, who attend a Brooklyn or Queens Catholic School or Academy.

 

THE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PROCESS OPENS JANUARY 14, 2019 FOR BROOKLYN AND QUEENS CATHOLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS (K – 8)!

Step 1: Register your child(ren) in a Catholic elementary academy or school (K – 8) in Brooklyn or Queens.

Step 2: Fill out the online application and submit with required supporting documentation. Please note that there is a non-refundable $30 application processing fee payable by credit card or check. Only one application per family is required.

2018 Scholarship Deadline

March 29, 2019 – Families who received an award last academic year.                                                                                                                 April 29, 2019 – New families.

Only completed applications submitted with all required supporting documents will be considered. Completed applications received on or before this date will be considered for the maximum award amount.
