Last chance to Sign up for PDHP Parent Workshops: There is a great chance for parents of students in Grades 4-8 to sign up for a five week workshop called Guiding Good Choices on Tuesdays 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 1/29, and 2/5 (7pm-8pm)

Are you a parent of a “tween?” A “tween” is a youngster who is too old to be called a child and too young to be called a teenager; they are certainly “be-tween.” If you are the parent of a “tween,” then this workshop is for you. Guiding Good Choices is a five session workshop designed to: Empower parents, Support each other, Learn tools, Strengthen family connections, and help children develop healthy behavior as they approach adolescence. Our presenter will be Cary Anne Fitzgerald, the Parent and Community Outreach Coordinator for the Program for the Development of Human Potential (PDHP). You may remember Cary Anne from her presentation last year, Is it Bullying or Bad Behavior? Please consider making this commitment to these five sessions. Space is limited and filling up quickly. Please call the school office if you are interested in attending – 718-634-2775

Early Childhood Registration: As we begin to prepare for the 2019-2020 school year, we want to ensure that our plans maximize the benefit to your child/children. We will begin open registration in Nursery, Pre-K and Kindergarten on January 7th. For more information on registration please click here. Please note we already have a waiting list in Pre-K for next school year.

Re-Registration: On January 10th re-registration packets will be sent home with the oldest child in the family. Please be sure to send back the re-registration from no later than Friday January 25th. All re-registration fees will be added to your FACTS account.

Fourth Grade Family Mass: Fourth Grade will be participating in the monthly grade–level Mass this Sunday, January 6 2019 at the 9:00am Mass. We hope you take this opportunity to share in the element of our faith that feeds us with your family and your family in Christ. Parents have a significant part to play in shaping the faith identity of children and engaging them in religious activities such as receiving the Eucharist, Reconciliation and service to others. We will have a reserved section of the Church upfront for your families.  A light fellowship will follow after the Mass and I hope you can join our parish in celebrating the 4th grade programs at St. Francis de Sales. We invite all families of the 4th graders to come to Mass and our fellowship.

Any questions please contact the main office at 718-634-2775. Please note that all spots have been filled for Mad Science.

Illness and Absent Notes: The cold and Flu season has begun and many parents ask, “When is my child sick enough to stay home from school?” This is not always an easy question to answer!  We hope that these tips can help.

A child who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and is likely to spread the illness to other children and staff.  We suggest making a plan for childcare ahead of time so you will not be caught without a comforting place for your child to stay if he/she is ill.

Our school policy states that you should not send your child to school if he/she has:

  • Fever in the past 24 hours
  • Vomiting in the past 24 hours
  • Diarrhea in the past 24 hours
  • Chills
  • Sore throat
  • Strep Throat (must have been taking an antibiotic for at least 24 hours before returning to school)
  • Bad cold, with a very runny nose or bad cough, especially if it has kept the child awake at night
  • Head lice – until your child has been treated according to the nurse or doctor’s instructions

If your child becomes ill at school and the teacher or school nurse feel the child is too sick to benefit from school or is contagious to other children, you will be called to come and take him/her home from school.  It is essential that your child’s teacher have a phone number where you can be contacted during the day and an emergency number in the event you cannot be reached. Please be sure that arrangements can be made to transport your child home from school and that childcare is available in case of illness.  If your daytime or emergency phone number changes during the year, please notify your child’s teacher immediately.

Please call the school’s nurse or main office if you have any questions or concerns.

If your child is absent due to illness please send your child in when they return with an absent note. A sample note can be found by clicking here.

If your child returns without a note, they are than marked illegally absent until a note is received by the classroom teacher.

Option C Parent Portal: We are now getting close to the  halfway point of the 2nd trimester. If you haven’t already, log on to the parent portal of Option C to check on how your child is progressing this trimester. This is a great way to see if your child is missing any assignments. You should have already received usernames and passwords. Please contact the main office via email at admin@stfrancisschoolbh.net if you have any questions.

Fundraising Corner

Chocolate Bar Sale: We will be selling World’s Finest Chocolate Products truly delicious chocolates that have been sold for years by schools and organizations.

This year we are hoping for All Families to assist with this sale in order to make it as successful as possible. If all 340 Families sell 1 box of chocolate, we will earn profit of over $10,000.00. This year we plan on using our profits to update SmartBoards and lighting  throughout the building.

On February 4th, your oldest child will be given a box of chocolate to take home. If you cannot support us in the sale, please return the tear off on or before January 30th. For more information please click here.

This form will be sent home as a hard copy early next week.

Box Tops for Education: Our next Box Tops for Education event has now begun.  For every 20 Box Tops a student brings in between Monday December 10th and Friday February 15th they will get a raffle tickets to win a $50 Amazon Gift Card. There will be a 2nd place Amazon Gift card of $25 and a 3rd place Amazon Gift Card for $10. The more Box Tops you bring in, the more chances you have to win. Good luck.

Card Party: We are 12 weeks away from our annual Card Party.

You may know that St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy’s Card Party is considered a premier Card Party in the area, and helps raise thousands of dollars for the school each year. On Wednesday 1/23/19 there will be a Card Party Meeting at 7pm in the school. Anyone interested in helping, please feel free to come by or send an email to sfdscardparty@aol.com  for more information.

Have a great weekend! Keep warm!

PS: We are always in need of some parents to help volunteering for our lunch periods. If you are VIRTUS trained and are able to do the lunch duty, we certainly appreciate it. We are continuing to assign lunch duty using a web-based service called Sign Up. It enables those who want to do lunch duty to sign up for slots on specific days with email reminders. It is our hope this will help with the number of cancellations and no shows from families.

To sign up for lunch duty please use the website: Lunch Duty Sign Up

1) Click the link above to see our Sign-Up on Sign Up

2) Review the options listed and choose the spot(s) you like.

3) Sign up! It’s Easy – you will NOT need to register an account or keep a password on Sign Up
