SFDS Week of January 6th 2019

Dear Families,

Happy New Year! We hope this correspondence finds you well and ready to tackle the second half of the school year.

A few items as we begin the first week of the new year on Monday, January 6th, 2020.

Early Childhood Registration/Open House: Early Childhood Registration: As we begin to prepare for the 2020-2021  school year, we want to ensure that our plans maximize the benefit to your child/children. We will begin open registration in Nursery, Pre-K and Kindergarten on January 8th. For more information on registration and our Early Childhood Open Houses please click here.

Re-Registration: During the week of January 13th re-registration packets will be sent home with the oldest child in the family. Please be sure to send back the envelope with the necessary documents no later than Monday, January 27th. Please note that all re-registration fees will be added to your FACTS account.

Parent/Student Traffic Safety: Saint Francis de Sales Catholic Academy urges you to support our priority of student and traffic safety around our school. Safe driving around the school improves the safety for all children, including yours. Please consider the following tips:

  1. Please drive slowly around Saint Francis de Sales Catholic Academy while children are present.
  2. U-turns and K-turns increase the likelihood a child may get struck and significantly disrupt the orderly flow of traffic. They should be avoided, especially when children are present.
  3. Drivers must STOP for pedestrians crossing at a marked crosswalk.
  4. Pedestrians must use marked crosswalks to cross the street. Never leave your car unattended.
  5. Do not block crosswalks, driveways, or fire hydrants.
  6. Be courteous to fellow parents and neighbors.
  7. Remain alert and encourage others to follow these safe driving tips.

Thank you in advance for your help with improving the safety of your children.

Last chance to Sign up for PDHP Parent Workshops: There is a great chance for parents of students in Grades 4-8 to sign up for a five-week workshop called Guiding Good Choices on Thursdays 1/9, 1/16, 1/23, 1/30, and 2/6 (7pm-8pm)

We tried to run this workshop in the fall and had to cancel due to poor turnout. We hope that we will be able to run in now.

Are you a parent of a “tween?” A “tween” is a youngster who is too old to be called a child and too young to be called a teenager; they are certainly “be-tween.” If you are the parent of a “tween,” then this workshop is for you. Guiding Good Choices is a five-session workshop designed to: Empower parents, Support each other, Learn tools, Strengthen family connections, and help children develop healthy behavior as they approach adolescence. Our presenter will be Cary Anne Fitzgerald, the Parent and Community Outreach Coordinator for the Program for the Development of Human Potential (PDHP). You may remember Cary Anne from her presentation earlier this year. Please consider making this commitment to these five sessions. Please call the school office if you are interested in attending – 718-634-2775

Faculty Professional Day: Just a reminder that in two weeks our students have a 4 day weekend that gets kicked off on Friday 1/17 as the faculty participates in a Diocesan wide professional development data day.

Yearbook Ads: Just a reminder that on Wednesday (1/8) all yearbook ads/dedications are due. For more information including instructions and an order form please click here.

Please note there is a $10 late fee charged for any order handed in on 1/10 or 1/11. No orders can be taken after 1/11/19.

First Penance: Good luck to our Saint Francis second graders who will be receiving first Penance on Wednesday 1/22 at 6:30pm.

We will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers as you continue on your spiritual journey and prepare for receiving the Eucharist for the first time.

Enrichment Programs: Starting with Mad Science and School House Chess in two weeks we are starting our second round of enrichment programs here at St. Francis de Sales. Flyers have been sent home for various enrichment programs over the past month (Mad Science, Chess, Lego, and Abrakadoodle Art) and can be found on our website or by clicking here. Any questions please contact the main office at 718-634-2775.

Illness and Absent Notes: The cold and Flu season has begun and many parents ask, “When is my child sick enough to stay home from school?” This is not always an easy question to answer!  We hope that these tips can help.

A child who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and is likely to spread the illness to other children and staff.  We suggest making a plan for childcare ahead of time so you will not be caught without a comforting place for your child to stay if he/she is ill.

Our school policy states that you should not send your child to school if he/she has:

  •  Fever in the past 24 hours
  •  Vomiting in the past 24 hours
  •  Diarrhea in the past 24 hours
  •  Chills
  • Sore throat
  • Strep Throat (must have been taking an antibiotic for at least 24 hours before returning to school)
  • Bad cold, with a very runny nose or bad cough, especially if it has kept the child awake at night
  • Head lice – until your child has been treated according to the nurse or doctor’s instructions

If your child becomes ill at school and the teacher or school nurse feel the child is too sick to benefit from school or is contagious to other children, you will be called to come and take him/her home from school.  It is essential that your child’s teacher have a phone number where you can be contacted during the day and an emergency number in the event you cannot be reached. Please be sure that arrangements can be made to transport your child home from school and that childcare is available in case of illness.  If your daytime or emergency phone number changes during the year, please notify your child’s teacher immediately.

Please call the school’s nurse or main office if you have any questions or concerns.

If your child is absent due to illness please send your child in when they return with an absent note. A sample note can be found by clicking here.

If your child returns without a note, they are then marked illegally absent until a note is received by the classroom teacher.

Lunch Duty:   We are in need of some parents to help to volunteer for our lunch periods. If you are VIRTUS trained and are able to do lunch duty, we certainly appreciate it. Parents we appreciate all of you signing up for Lunch Duty.

We can always use help!

Please be aware you are not guaranteed to have your child’s class every time you sign up.  We do our best to accommodate whenever possible, however there will be times you will be assigned other classes when you sign up.  There are also many times our teacher like to stay with their class for lunch.

Please keep this into consideration.

Thank you once again for all your help.
