Dear Academy Families,
Here’s what you need to know about the last week before Winter Recess!
It is finally here. Catholic Schools Week 2021. This is a week of celebration of our Faith. Our families commit themselves to the mission of Catholic education; celebrating Catholic Schools Week is a part of that. We take time out to celebrate our Faith, family, friendships, morals, and service.
This week is also the perfect time to recognize the contributions that Catholic schools make to students all across our country. Students here at St. Francis de Sales are part of the 2 million students in the United States who are currently attending Catholic schools, the majority of them in-person. The education they receive builds on a tradition of academic excellence older than the United States itself, dating back nearly four centuries.
This year Catholic Schools also get the opportunity to celebrate that Catholic Academies and Parish Schools are unparalleled in their faith, excellence, and service. This theme is the lens through which Catholic Schools Week will be celebrated. It is also the framework that guides A Year of Renewal for Catholic Education. It is fitting that the foundation of Catholic education will not only be celebrated but strengthened as we continue to move through the 2020-2021 school year.
Click here for a schedule of events for Catholic Schools Week here at St. Francis de Sales. (February 7th-February 12th). There is a lot of information on the different dress down days, nighttime events, and other special events. We hope that all of our students and families think of participating in the fun events we have planned for this special week
We also hope to see many families at our Opening Mass on 2/7 at 10:00 am here at St. Francis de Sales Parish. If you can’t make it in person at this time please feel free to watch at home both on the St. Francis Parish Facebook and Academy Facebook. Please note there is limited space in Church.
As we begin Catholic Schools Week this week, I am very proud to be in the company of a stellar faculty and staff and the best kids in the world. Have a Happy Catholic Schools Week!

Vacation and Remote Learning Availability: As we have stated since our reopening plan was published in August it is our collective effort that will keep us open. This week we heard a lot of chatter about upcoming ski vacations, trips, and vacations out-of-state. A reminder that we must all observe all the guidelines: If you find yourself in a large gathering, take extra precautions; if you travel outside the state, you must follow the NY state quarantine guidelines before returning to school.
We only offer distance learning to those students who are in quarantine due to COVID exposure, to those students who have tested positive, to those students who are home awaiting an end to their quarantine, and to students who are homesick (including their siblings if necessary).
If you choose to travel/vacation on school days– joining a live-streamed class will not be available. Please note those absences are illegal. All other absences will be treated as regular absences and work can be completed after returning to school.
I-Ready: Next week all of your children in Grades K-8 will be sent home with their I-Ready mid-year diagnostic test in Reading and Math. There will be a letter that explains the purpose of the exam and the next steps both in the classroom and at home with the I-Ready program. Of course, if you have any questions please be in touch with your child’s teacher and/or the administration.
Registration 2021-2022: Please note that all families that have a sibling (brother/sister) and filled out the intent form to register for the next school year should have received an email three weeks ago with a link to the registration portal for the 2021-2022 school year.
All sibling registrations need to be fully completed by 2/5/21 to guarantee a spot for the 2021-2022 school year.
Yearbooks Ads: We are now selling ads for this year’s yearbook. On Wednesday (3/10) all yearbook ads/dedications are due. For more information including instructions and an order form please click here. Please note there is a $10 late fee charged for any order handed in on 3/11 or 3/12. No orders can be taken after 3/12/21.
Mobile App: Just a reminder that our Mobile APP celebrates its three year anniversary. To download search for ST. FRANCIS DE SALES ACADEMY in the App Store or Google Play. This is a great way to stay current with school events, your child’s HW, tuition account, and child’s grades.

Chocolate Bar Sale: Our school will be conducting a fund-raising candy sale in order to raise the needed money. We will be selling World’s Finest Chocolate Products – truly delicious chocolates that have been sold for years by schools and organizations. One taste will tell you where they got their name and you will find people in your neighborhood who have been World’s Finest fans for years.
This year we are hoping for All Families to assist with this sale in order to make it as successful as possible. If all 341 Families sell 1 box of chocolate, we will earn profit of over $10,000.00. Due to our inability to fundraise as in the past please consider purchasing a box this year.
On February 8th, your oldest child will be given a box of chocolate to take home unless you opted out.
All Students of families selling a box of Chocolate will receive be able to dress down on Friday, March 19th (March 18th if your child is remote on March 19th)
Carnation Drive A random act of kindness, no matter how big or small, can make a HUGE difference in the lives of others. The National Junior Honor Society of SFDS Academy will be running, “Valentine Kindness.” We will be making a delivery of cards to the Residents of the Beacon Rehabilitation Center, right here in Rockaway Park, right before Valentine’s Day, and to deliver carnations to the residents and staff. Our goal is to deliver 200 carnations so that ALL the residents and staff receive a little bit of love that day.
If you would like to participate, the donated cost is $5.00
Please submit your donation in an envelope, with the EXACT amount, with your name on it, to your teacher by Monday, February 8th. Orders for the flowers need to be submitted by then, to assure we get the correct amount, for the Residents and Staff at the Beacon.
We appreciate all your support.
