SFDS Week of February 3rd 2020

Dear Families,

We’ve made it through this extremely cold week, and thankfully the weather seems to be looking up as we head into the weekend. Mr. Eduardo continued to disinfect all surfaces today, particularly door knobs, stair handrails, light switches, bathrooms, etc. We encouraged all students to thoroughly wash their hands multiple times throughout the day and our teachers made sure students cleaned their desks with Lysol wipes more than the usual after-lunch wipedown. We are hoping this will keep the germs at bay, but also ask to please keep your children home if they are not fully recovered from their ailments. Thanks for your help!

Teacher Appreciation and Half Day: On Wednesday February 5th, we will be celebrating all the hard working and selfless teachers who we are blessed to have teaching the students of St. Francis de Sales. We will have a half day with a 12 noon dismissal as the teachers are treated to a luncheon in their honor. Just a reminder that Wednesday is a dress down day for all students as well.

Congratulations to Anthony Gennaro for winning the Principal of the Day contest and to Colin Mundy and Madeline Gallagher for winning the Co-Assistant Principal of the Day contest! We look forward to this special day during Catholic Schools Week! We had over 130 entries this year and there were so many great ideas. Thanks to all who entered.

If you have any questions about any of the dates or events of Catholic Schools Week please feel free to reach out to the main office at 718-634-2775. Feel free to refer to the parents guide to Catholic Schools Week on our website as well.

“First Day” Movie Screening: Come join us on Monday 2/3/20 at 7pm to watch “The First Day” Chris Herren, former professional basketball player, author and wellness advocate, has shared his story of recovery with over 1 million people nationwide. The First Day film chronicles this journey revealing Herren’s vulnerability and his profound connections with high school students who, in turn, have shared their stories of struggle and strength. Through the power of storytelling, The First Day addresses issues that school systems, communities and people across the country are impacted by, directly or indirectly, each day including substance use, other harmful behaviors and mental wellness.

Please note this film will be shown in the Spring to our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders before Chris Herren comes to speak to them on May 26th 2020.

On May 26th 2020 Chris Herren will also be here at 7pm to talk to parents as well so please save the date.

Carnation Drive A random act of kindness, no matter how big or small, can make a HUGE difference in the lives of others.  The National Junior Honor Society of SFDS Academy will be running, “Valentine Kindness.” We will be visiting the Residents of the Beacon Rehabilitation Center, right here in Rockaway Park, on Valentine’s Day, to deliver carnations to the residents and staff, as a surprise, random act of kindness.  Our goal is to deliver 200 carnations, so that ALL the residents and staff receive a little bit of love that day.

If you would like to participate, the donated cost is $4.00

Please submit your donation in an envelope, with the EXACT amount, with your name on it, to your teacher by Monday February 3rd.  Orders for the flowers need to be submitted by then, to assure we get the correct amount, for the Residents and Staff at the Beacon.

We appreciate all your support.
