Dear Academy Families,
In the month of December, we spend time preparing children for concerts, decorating classrooms and hallways, making preparations for Christmas at home, shopping, baking, attending parties and sharing joy. As you know, Advent is the time for waiting, praying, and preparing ourselves for the birth of Christ. By taking a step away from the hustle and bustle, asking kids to slow down and reflect on what the birth of Christ means to them, the world, and our faith, such a richness will be added to this time of waiting.
Please take a look below to see what is going on for the week of December 3rd here at SFDS.
Blessed Trinity Confirmation: Congratulations and God Bless! On Thursday December 6th at 5pm, many members of St. Francis de Sales Grade 8 will be blessed by the Holy Spirit at Blessed Trinity Parish. May the gifts of the Holy Spirit be with our 8th grade and lead them to be the future leaders of the church.
Report Cards: All report cards will be sent home on Tuesday 12/4. Teachers are available to meet on both Tuesday 12/4 from 6pm-7:30pm and on Wednesday 12/5 from 12:45pm-2:45pm. For families in Grades N-4 please keep to the appointments that you signed up for. In Grades 5-8 please feel free to go to your child’s individual teacher(s) at the assigned times. If anyone made an appointment and needs to cancel please email your child’s teacher directly.
Immaculate Conception: Saturday December 8th is a Holy Day of Obligation for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Please remember that as Catholics, we are asked to go to mass on this day.
2nd Grade Proximate Prep (SFDS): Just a reminder to all 2nd grade families of students who are receiving the sacrament of communion here at St. Francis that there there is Proximate Prep on Sunday December 2, 2018. Children receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Holy Communion in 2019 and their Parents are asked to join us by sitting in the reserved section in the front of church for Mass. Following the Mass the parish will have a light fellowship and a presentation in the gym for the parents and children until 11am.
PDHP Parent Workshops: We were sad to have to cancel the Family Fun Night for Grades 7-8 the other night due to lack of interest. However there is a great chance for parents of students in Grades 4-8 to sign up for a five week called Guiding Good Choices on Tuesdays 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 1/29, and 2/5 (7pm-8pm)
Are you a parent of a “tween?” A “tween” is a youngster who is too old to be called a child and too young to be called a teenager; they are certainly “be-tween.” If you are the parent of a “tween,” then this workshop is for you. Guiding Good Choices is a five session workshop designed to: Empower parents, Support each other, Learn tools, Strengthen family connections, and help children develop healthy behavior as they approach adolescence. Our presenter will be Cary Anne Fitzgerald, the Parent and Community Outreach Coordinator for the Program for the Development of Human Potential (PDHP). You may remember Cary Anne from her presentation last year, Is it Bullying or Bad Behavior? The Guiding Good Choices workshop can accommodate up to 15 participants. Please consider making this commitment to these five sessions. Space is limited and filling up quickly. Please call the school office if you are interested in attending – 718-634-2775
Graduation and Makeup Pictures: On December 10th, the 8th grade will be taking their individual graduation pictures. If your child was absent on the original picture day, please know your child can dress up or wear their uniform for their picture on 12/10. If you would like your child to retake their picture, please send in your original pictures with a note before Thursday December 6th. We will call down the students whose pictures we have the next school day for make ups.
SFDS Festival of Lights: Please join St. Francis de Sales Parish on Tuesday 12/11 at 6:30pm for an annual tradition, the lighting of trees in our prayer garden. There will be Hot Chocolate for all with Christmas Carols sung. Please be there for this great tradition here at St. Francis.
Student Illness: As the colder weather begins, we see more and more children who become ill. A child who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and is likely to spread the illness to other children and staff. If your child is ill, before sending them back to school please clear it with your child’s pediatrician. Please call the school’s nurse or main office if you have any questions or concerns.
Early Childhood Registration: As we begin to prepare for the 2019-2020 school year, we want to ensure that our plans maximize the benefit to your child/children. Three weeks ago we sent home letters of intent for any current Nursery and Pre-K student here at St. Francis who plans on attending St. Francis in 2019 as a Pre-K or Kindergarten student. Those forms are now past due As always, we thank you for your dedication and support to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy. If you have any concerns that we may address, please do not hesitate to call us or email us.
This week a letter was sent home to families of current students to see if any siblings of current students will be joining our Early Childhood. Please send in all letters of intent as soon as possible as we will begin open registration in Nursery, Pre-K and Kindergarten early in January. This is especially important to do for next year’s Pre-K class.

We are continuing to assign lunch duty using a web-based service called Sign Up. It enables those who want to do lunch duty to sign up for slots on specific days with email reminders.
