In the midst of the Christmas rush, may you find some quiet moments to see more clearly the priceless gifts of God’s love and family bonds. As you shop for Christmas presents, join us in acknowledging the real Gift of this season. Remember to take God into everyday; by acts of kindness, words of forgiveness, gestures of comfort and gifts of peace. May you and your families experience many blessings this Advent and Christmas. May God grant you and yours the joy, hope, and peace of this Holy season.
A special thank you again to all the parents that came out for Family/Teacher Conferences this week. Please take a look below to see what is going on for the week of December 11th here at SFDS.
Immaculate Conception: Saturday December 8th is a Holy Day of Obligation for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Please remember that as Catholics, we are asked to go to mass on this day.
Graduation and Make up Pictures: On Monday December 10th, the 8th grade will be taking their individual graduation pictures. If your child was absent on the original picture day, please know your child can dress up or wear their uniform for their picture on 12/10 as well. Today all pictures were sent home. Any issues please let us know by email over the weekend as Monday 12/10, could be a makeup day if there was something wrong with your child’s pictures. If you need to have a retake please send the original pictures with a note asking for a retake with your child on Monday.
Chicken Finger Day: This Tuesday December 11 is Chicken Finger day, so if you have signed your child up for this special lunch, a packed lunch is not needed on this day.
Advent Penance Service: This Thursday (12/13) Grades 3-8 will be joining together to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This weekend, please discuss the importance of this Sacrament and welcoming the Christ Child with a ready heart.
Christmas Boutique: On Wednesday, children received an envelope with information regarding this year’s Christmas Boutique, which is being held on Wednesday 12/12, Thursday 12/13, and Friday 12/14. Your child(ren) should come to school that day with whatever money they need to purchase items that day. Please know that parents are not permitted to help their children during the Boutique so the students can purchase Christmas presents for the family, including Mom and Dad!
Please see below for the schedule:
Terranova Results: We have recently received our Terranova scores compared to the rest of the schools in the Diocese. I am pleased to say that across all grade levels and across all three components (Reading, Language, and Math) we scored above the Diocesan and Queens South Averages. To see how our students did as a school please click here to view those reports. All individual reports were sent home with your child’s report card.
A special congratulation to all students and teachers on doing so well on these Common Core Terranovas.
SFDS Festival of Lights: Please join St. Francis de Sales Parish this Tuesday 12/11 at 6:30pm for an annual tradition, the lighting of trees in our prayer garden. There will be Hot Chocolate for all with Christmas Carols sung. Please be there for what is a great tradition here at St. Francis.
Christmas Show: It is amazing that when we return next Monday we only have two weeks of school until Christmas. Any questions about tickets please call the office. An order form for tickets can be found here. Please note that all ticket orders were due by today.
Any questions about costumes or dress please contact Ms. Mangano at email@example.com
If available, they will be sold at a first come first served basis starting Tuesday December 11th. No tickets will be sold at the door. A separate email will be sent out on Monday to explain in more detail.
Dress Rehearsals: All students should be ready in costume on Monday 12/17 (B Classes) and on Tuesday 12/18 (A and C Classes) for our dress rehearsal.
The dress rehearsal serves as a chance for elderly relatives who are unable to come out at night or handle a large crowd to see the show. The rehearsal will begin at 12:45pm. This dress rehearsal does not serve as a way to get a sneak peek or another viewing of the show. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
Early Childhood Registration: As we begin to prepare for the 2019-2020 school year, we want to ensure that our plans maximize the benefit to your child/children. Four weeks ago we sent home letters of intent for any current Nursery and Pre-K student here at St. Francis who plans on attending St. Francis in 2019 as a Pre-K or Kindergarten student. Those forms are now past due As always, we thank you for your dedication and support to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy. If you have any concerns that we may address, please do not hesitate to call us or email us.
Two weeks ago a letter was sent home to families of current students to see if any siblings of current students will be joining our Early Childhood. Please send in all letters of intent no later than Monday as we will begin open registration in Nursery, Pre-K and Kindergarten early in January. This is especially important to do for next year’s Pre-K class.
Dress Down Day: This Friday (12/14) students can bring in a $1.00 for a Dress Down Day! Students are encouraged to dress in their Pajamas or wear Red and Green. All proceeds are going to Pietrofight. Pietrosfight was created to raise awareness and funds for potential treatments and hope of a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Pietro was part of a clinical trial of a drug named Exdonys, previously called Eteplirsen, which was the first treatment approved by the FDA for DMD. Pietro is currently receiving an infusion once a week as apart of his Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy treatment. We ask you to join us December 14th by wearing your pajamas and making a donation of at least $1. We will wear PJs to celebrate the spirit of childhood that we hope to preserve for Pietro Joseph and other children diagnosed with DMD. It’s never too early to teach our children the importance of giving.
Paul Effman Band: Experienced musicians will perform at the Christmas Show on December 17th and December 19. December 11th and 17th, Experienced Violin will practice from 3:45-4:30 and Experienced Band will practice from 4:15pm-5:15pm to prepare for our Christmas concert. This practice will replace the small group lessons. Beginners will be performing in the Spring Concert and will keep their regular scheduled lessons on Tuesdays. . Thank you!
Toys for Tots: With the Christmas season approaching, as we look forward to the birth of our Lord, we should remember those less fortunate than us. In the spirit of giving, we are asking that students donate a gift for other children. Please bring in an unwrapped toy or game as soon as possible. All donations will go to children in need. Thank you for your generosity.
PDHP Parent Workshops: We were sad to have to cancel the Family Fun Night for Grades 7-8 the other night due to lack of interest. However there is a great chance for parents of students in Grades 4-8 to sign up for a five week called Guiding Good Choices on Tuesdays 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 1/29, and 2/5 (7pm-8pm)
Are you a parent of a “tween?” A “tween” is a youngster who is too old to be called a child and too young to be called a teenager; they are certainly “be-tween.” If you are the parent of a “tween,” then this workshop is for you. Guiding Good Choices is a five session workshop designed to: Empower parents, Support each other, Learn tools, Strengthen family connections, and help children develop healthy behavior as they approach adolescence. Our presenter will be Cary Anne Fitzgerald, the Parent and Community Outreach Coordinator for the Program for the Development of Human Potential (PDHP). You may remember Cary Anne from her presentation last year, Is it Bullying or Bad Behavior? The Guiding Good Choices workshop can accommodate up to 15 participants. Please consider making this commitment to these five sessions. Space is limited and filling up quickly. Please call the school office if you are interested in attending – 718-634-2775
Box Tops for Education: Our next Box Tops for Education event is about to begin. For every 20 Box Tops a student brings in between Monday December 10th and Friday February 15th they will get a raffle tickets to win a $50 Amazon Gift Card. There will be a 2nd place Amazon Gift card of $25 and a 3rd place Amazon Gift Card for $10. The more Box Tops you bring in, the more chances you have to win. Good luck.
Have a great weekend!

We are continuing to assign lunch duty using a web-based service called Sign Up. It enables those who want to do lunch duty to sign up for slots on specific days with email reminders. It is our hope this will help with the number of cancellations and no shows from families.
