SFDS Week of April 8th 2019

Dear Families,

As mentioned at Back to School Night and many times this year our school will be going through AdvanceED Accreditation, which is similar to Middle States Accreditation beginning Monday April 8th and going through Wednesday April 10th. The Accreditation Process helps institutions make the most of their talents and resources. On Tuesday and Wednesday of this coming week, a team of evaluators will be interviewing various students, teachers, Board members, administrators, etc. as well as visiting classrooms for observations. We have prepared extensively for their visit and look forward to a productive few days.  Thanks to all in advanced for making this important visit successful.


Now onto the week of April 8th here at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy


State Exam: Congratulations to Grades 4, 6, and 7 which did a wonderful job completing the first round of New York State Testing this week. Students were focused and we know everyone gave their very best. Our Math State Test will be held on May 1 and 2.


Lenten Penance Services: During these final weeks of Lent, Grades 3-8 will be going to a Lenten Penance Service this Friday April 12th. Please reinforce the importance of this prayerful sacrament at home as we move closer to Holy Week.


PDHP Parent Workshop: Please try to join us on Tuesday April 9th at 7pm for  a parent workshop entitled #Parents-Social Media and your child. Learn about social media trends and tips to keep your child connected safely.


Dress Down Day: This Thursday 4/11 is a $1 dress down day. Students are asked to wear Blue shirts for Autism Awareness Month. All proceeds will be donated to the Brooklyn Autism Center. BAC is non-profit organization that has been providing high-quality education to individuals with autism since 2007. The Brooklyn Autism Center runs a full day, twelve-month program for children 5-21 years of age utilizing evidence based practices. The school creates a community that embraces the unique abilities of each student and provides solutions and support giving them the opportunity to learn, contribute and live life to their full potential.


Oratorical Contest:  Congratulations to our 6th-8th  graders who have qualified for the school Oratorical Contest on Thursday 4/11 at 12:45pm. The parents of the children who will be participating in the Oratorical Contest  are welcome to join us in the Gym to root them on. Congratulations again to Mary Youngberg, Caitrina Mullaly, Delaney Summerville, Julia Turchiano, Scarlette Markle, Caragh McMorrow, Lily Casares, Holly Murray, Mary Corrigan,  and Megan Youngberg.


A special thank you to Ms. Re and Mrs. Schmitt for coordinating this contest.


Shelilgh Law Concert:  We are now only a week away from a new fundraiser here at our school a Spring Concert. Please notes that Doors Open at 6:30pm next Friday with the DJ starting at 7pm and Shilelagh Law beginning at 8pm A special thank you to all the parents that have made this wonderful event happen. A special thank you especially to Mr. Keith Sullivan for coordinating. There are less than 20 tickets left that can be purchased through the main office.  


St. Jude Math-a-thon: Thank you to everyone who participated in our annual St. Jude Math-a-Thon. We raised a very generous $17,000! A special thank you to Mrs. Foti for coordinating this fundraiser each year. I think we are well on our way to being a Top 100 School for the 6th year in a row.


Spring Book Fair: The Book Fair is coming back! Each class will have a scheduled time to visit the Fair ( schedule to be sent home closer to the date) in the School Gym throughout the 3 days it will be here: April 30th-May 2nd. Thanks to all our book Fair volunteers for their help, especially our Coordinator, Mrs. Rita Martin.


Golf Outing: Our 16th Annual Golf and Tennis outing will be held on Friday May 10th 2019 at the Marine Park Golf Course and Belle Harbor Yacht Club


Please consider taking a hole sponsorship with your family name displayed or a special cause or business you may wish to advertise. A beautiful sign will be displayed on a given golf hole or two displaying your support for our great school. More details are in the brochure that was sent home.  This is truly appreciated.

Lastly, please jump in on a great day on the golf course where we enjoy fellow neighbors & friends for a full day of golf followed up by great eats and drinks on the course & post-golf dinner. Put your foursomes together as soon as possible to help secure a successful fundraiser and your foursome on this truly special day. Anyone may drop off monies at the rectory as well.  Thank You.

The success of this day, May 10th, requires all of us even if you do not golf.  As we rely on fundraisers such as the Annual Golf Classic to help support the education and growth of our students here at St. Francis de Sales. Parish Easter Egg Hunt: Next Saturday at 10am, all students in Nursery through Grade 4 are invited to participate in the St. Francis de Sales Parish Easter Egg Hunt in the Prayer Garden. If there is bad weather the hunt will take place in the school gym.



Passion Play: Please join us for our annual Passion Play on Tuesday 4/16 where many of our 6th grade students reenact the solemn events that occurred through Jesus’s journey towards death and resurrection.  Thanks again Mrs. Hayes and Mrs. Sullivan to for coordinating this special event. Please join us on Tuesday 4/16 at 1:10pm.


State of the Academy: Please join us on Tuesday April 30th at 7pm for the annual Board of Directors’ State of the Academy. Our Board Members will be providing specific updates on various facets of the Academy including finances, facilities, academics and many more.


Spring Concert: Members of the Paul Effman Band, please save the date! Tuesday May 28th at 7pm is our sixth annual St Francis de Sales School Band Spring Concert. Good luck again to those playing in this years Honor Band.  


Summer Uniform: Starting on Monday May 6th students can begin to wear their summer uniforms. This is just a reminder if anyone needs to purchase summer uniforms you should think about ordering them soon. Save the Date! On June 7th 2019, Flynn and O’Hara will be at school to measure students for their uniforms for the 2019-2020 school year.


Fundraising Corner


Box Tops for Education: The last contest of the year is officially beginning.  

What better way to celebrate the June heat than with ice cream?!  The grade that brings in the most box tops will win an ice cream party in June (specific date to be determined).  Please make sure your child’s name and class is on the submission so that the correct class can be credited.   Submitting your box tops in a ziploc bag is the easiest way to hand in.  Keep clipping and submitting and let’s double our total from they year so far which is just over $900.


Pop Hop Volunteer: We are very excited for our 4th Annual Pop Hop on Friday May 17th. Mrs. Moriarty and Mrs. Shaw, our Pop Hop coordinators, have already begun the planning process. If any mom is interested in volunteering, please reach out to Mrs. Shaw at glifeofreilly@aol.com or Mrs. Moriarty at nmoriarty@mineola.k12.ny.us

PS: We are always in need of some parents to help volunteering for our lunch periods. If you are VIRTUS trained and are able to do the lunch duty, we certainly appreciate it. We are continuing to assign lunch duty using a web-based service called Sign Up. It enables those who want to do lunch duty to sign up for slots on specific days with email reminders. It is our hope this will help with the number of cancellations and no shows from families.

Financial Aid for 2019-2020 School Year: Financial aid is available for students in Grades Pre-K to 8, who attend a Brooklyn or Queens Catholic School or Academy.



Step 1: Register your child(ren) in a Catholic elementary academy or school (K – 8) in Brooklyn or Queens.

Step 2: Fill out the online application and submit with required supporting documentation. Please note that there is a non-refundable $30 application processing fee payable by credit card or check. Only one application per family is required.

2019 Scholarship Deadline                                                                                                              April 29, 2019 – New families.

Only completed applications submitted with all required supporting documents will be considered. Completed applications received on or before this date will be considered for the maximum award amount. Completed applications received after this date will still be considered but will not be given priority for the 2019-2020 school year. To apply click below
