Happy Easter! The days of Lent and the winter weather are now gone and we look forward to warmer days and the new life that the Risen Lord has brought us. It is unbelievable that in two weeks we begin the month of May, and will be in the home stretch of the 2018- 2019 school year.
During this time of year many events have been planned; the celebration of the sacrament of the First Eucharist, Grade 7 Ring/Pin celebration, band recital, Graduation, just to name a few…. It is a joyful time to be around Saint Francis! At the same time, it is tempting to get into the summer mindset prematurely. We still have a lot to accomplish! Please remind your children that the hard work of being a student does not decrease when the temperature increases. Also, the high expectations of respect in our interactions with each other knows no season, takes no holiday.
Now onto the week of April 29th here at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy
State Tests: On Wednesday May 1 and Thursday May 2, the 4th, 6th, and 7th grade will be taking the Math State Tests. Remember to get a good night’s sleep and eat a nutritious breakfast on the days of the test. We know each student will do their very best!
First Communion: Our second grade’s special sacrament is fast approaching. They’ve worked and prayed all year in preparation for their First Holy Communion on Saturday May 4th. We know it will be a wonderful day for all our second grade families.We will keep them in our prayers for this very special and important moment in their life.
Chicken Finger Day: On Tuesday April 30th we will be having our monthly Chicken Finger lunch. If you have signed up your child(ren) to receive chicken fingers, they will not need their lunches on that day.
Option C Grades: We are now past the halfway point of the third trimester. If you haven’t already, please log on to the parent portal of Option C to check on how your child is progressing this year. This is a great way to see if your child is missing any assignments. Please contact the main office via email at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions.
Nursery Mother’s Day Tea: Just a reminder that our Nursery moms are invited to a Mother’s Day tea on Friday May 10th. You should have already received the invitation and reminder from Mrs.Troia. The Nursery students are very excited to shower their moms with a special song and gifts!
Spring Book Fair: The Book Fair is coming back! Each class will have a scheduled time to visit the Fair (see below) in the School Gym throughout the 2 days it will be here: April 30th and May 2nd. Thanks to all our book Fair volunteers for their help, especially our Coordinator, Mrs. Rita Martin.
State of the Academy: Please join us on Tuesday May 7th (Date Change) at 7pm for the annual Board of Directors’ State of the Academy. Our Board Members will be providing specific updates on various facets of the Academy including finances, facilities, academics and many more.
Brooklyn Cyclone Night: Just a reminder that Friday 5/10 is the last chance for your family to join us for our annual night with the Brooklyn Cyclones! St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is participating in School Spirit Night fundraiser at MCU Park on June 17th at 7pm. If you would like to attend, send the cut off at the bottom of the flyer with your payment to the school office. While we cannot guarantee any seating arrangements, we suggest you send one order to cover everyone in your group. This way, it is more likely that all of your seats will be together. Plus don’t miss the exciting pregame: Collars vs. Scholars II. Mr. Scharbach along with other Catholic School Principals will be facing off against Father Sean Suckiel and other diocesan priests in a pregame softball game. Watch the principals take the mound to try and revenge last years loss to the priests!
2019 St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy Family Survey: In an effort to improve system practices, Saint Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is conducting a Family Survey. We value your opinion and ask that you take the time to complete this survey.
Just a few weeks ago we went through the AdvanceED Accreditation. This Accreditation Process helps us make the most of their talents and resources. The AdvancED Performance Accreditation requires that institutions must:
- Meet the AdvancED Standards and accreditation policies.
- Demonstrate quality assurance through internal and engagement reviews.
- Engage in continuous improvement.
It is helpful to the academy board of directors and administrative team to have families complete this survey.

Spring Fling: On Friday May 10th we will be hosting our last dance of the year for our 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Tickets are $15 and will include a Pizza Dinner. All tickets need to be bought before Wednesday May 8th.
Pop Hop: We are very excited for our Annual Pop Hop on Friday May 17th. Tickets for the Pop Hop will go on sale the day we return from Easter Break. The order form for tickets can also be found by clicking here.
Golf Outing: Our 16th Annual Golf and Tennis outing will be held on Friday May 10th 2019 at the Marine Park Golf Course and Belle Harbor Yacht Club
Please consider taking a hole sponsorship with your family name displayed or a special cause or business you may wish to advertise. A beautiful sign will be displayed on a given golf hole or two displaying your support for our great school. More details are in the brochure that was sent home. This is truly appreciated.
Lastly, please jump in on a great day on the golf course where we enjoy fellow neighbors & friends for a full day of golf followed up by great eats and drinks on the course & post-golf dinner. Put your foursomes together as soon as possible to help secure a successful fundraiser and your foursome on this truly special day. Anyone may drop off monies at the rectory as well. Thank You.
The success of this day, May 10th, requires all of us even if you do not golf. As we rely on fundraisers such as the Annual Golf Classic to help support the education and growth of our students here at St. Francis de Sales. SAVE THE DATES
Spring Carnival: The National Junior Honor Society is sponsoring our annual Spring Carnival to be held on Friday May 17th, 2019. Nursery through Grade 5 are invited to participate in the activities created and operated by the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Admission to the carnival will be $1.00 per child, and there will be snacks and drinks available for purchase for $1.00 each on that day. To purchase a ticket, please send in a dollar in an envelope labeled with your child’s name and class and the word’s “Spring Carnival” on it. Tickets will be given to the teachers to distribute the day of the Carnival. Due to space, and time limitations, this carnival is open to students only. Thank you to Ms. Killian for coordinating this fun event!
Outdoor Movie Night: On Friday May 24th, we will be hosting another Outdoor Movie Night. Gates open at 7:45, Movie starts promptly at 8:15. Come celebrate the start of Memorial Day weekend with us! Snacks will be sold. Don’t forget to bring your own beach chair or towel!
Spring Concert: Members of the Paul Effman Band, please save the date! Tuesday May 28th at 7pm is our annual St Francis de Sales School Band Spring Concert.
Summer Uniform: Starting on Monday May 6th students can begin to wear their summer uniforms. This is just a reminder if anyone needs to purchase summer uniforms you should think about ordering them soon. Save the Date! On June 7th 2019, Flynn and O’Hara will be at school to measure students for their uniforms for the 2019-2020 school year.
Memorial Day Parade: Please save the date for Monday May 27th and join the Academy community and Franny our Mascot to march in the Memorial Day Parade. More information will be given in the next week. We would love to see everyone come out for this special event.
Art Show: Please join us on May 21st at 6pm for our 3rd annual Art Show! Ms. Mangano and our students have worked tirelessly in preparation for a truly superb art gallery display. Box Tops for Education: The last contest of the year is officially beginning.
What better way to celebrate the June heat than with ice cream?! The grade that brings in the most box tops will win an ice cream party in June (specific date to be determined). Please make sure your child’s name and class is on the submission so that the correct class can be credited. Submitting your box tops in a ziploc bag is the easiest way to hand in.

PS: We are always in need of some parents to help volunteering for our lunch periods. If you are VIRTUS trained and are able to do the lunch duty, we certainly appreciate it. We are continuing to assign lunch duty using a web-based service called Sign Up. It enables those who want to do lunch duty to sign up for slots on specific days with email reminders. It is our hope this will help with the number of cancellations and no shows from families.

Financial Aid for 2019-2020 School Year: Financial aid is available for students in Grades Pre-K to 8, who attend a Brooklyn or Queens Catholic School or Academy.
THE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PROCESS OPENS JANUARY 14, 2019 FOR BROOKLYN AND QUEENS CATHOLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS (K – 8)!
Step 1: Register your child(ren) in a Catholic elementary academy or school (K – 8) in Brooklyn or Queens.
Step 2: Fill out the online application and submit with required supporting documentation. Please note that there is a non-refundable $30 application processing fee payable by credit card or check. Only one application per family is required.
2019 Scholarship Deadline April 29, 2019 – New families.
Only completed applications submitted with all required supporting documents will be considered. Completed applications received on or before this date will be considered for the maximum award amount.
