Dear Academy Families,
Happy Easter! The days of Lent and the winter weather are now gone and we look forward to warmer days and the new life that the Risen Lord has brought us. It is unbelievable that in a few weeks we begin the month of May, and will be in the home stretch of the 2020- 2021 school year. During this time of year many events have been planned; the celebration of the sacrament of the First Eucharist, Grade 7 Ring/Pin celebration, Blue and Gold Day, Graduation, just to name a few…. It is a joyful time to be around Saint Francis! At the same time, it is tempting to get into the summer mindset prematurely. We still have a lot to accomplish! Please remind your children that the hard work of being a student does not decrease when the temperature increases. Also, the high expectations of respect in our interactions with each other know no season, takes no holiday. Reinforcements of these ideals at home can be a great help to your child’s success here at school.
In this Sunday’s readings we hear in the Acts of the Apostles “The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common (Acts 4:32-35) We are blessed to be part of a strong faith community here at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy. Individuals who are engaged with others in their faith are more likely to practice this faith and to share it with others. As we share in the Eucharist, we are united in our understanding of Jesus. The understanding of fellowship is vital in the strengthening of our faith. Students in St.. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy are surrounded by a community of the faithful in staff, teachers, other students, and families. This fellowship of faith is an incredible opportunity. We continue to Thank God for the Gift of a Catholic Education.
As we come back from Easter Recess we wanted to take this opportunity to remind families about the process for students to be remote. Students may be remote only if he or she is out of school because of COVID-19 related symptoms; COVID-19 exposure (see below), or some other long term pressing medical issue. Once the student is cleared to come back to school, he or she must return to school or be considered absent. Students on vacation or out of school for other non-COVID or medical reasons cannot be remote and are marked absent. Please note that you must contact the office first for permission to be a part of remote learning. Thanks in advance for your cooperation in following this protocol.
A question that gets asked many times is how do I know if my child was a close contact with someone who has COVID-19. A Close Contact as defined by the NYC DOH is someone who has been within 6ft. for at least 10 minutes over a 24-hour period of time with someone who has COVID-19 during their infectious period, regardless of face-covering use or the presence of a barrier. The infectious period is when someone with COVID-19 may potentially spread it to others. The start date is two days before the person had their first symptom or two days before their COVID-19 test date if they never had symptoms.
Now onto the week of April 12th here at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy.
Congratulations: Congratulations and God Bless! On Wednesday, April 14th, many members of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy Grade 8 will be blessed by the Holy Spirit at Blessed Trinity Parish. May the gifts of the Holy Spirit be with our 8th grade and lead them to be the future leaders of the church.
Autism Awareness Month: April is National Autism Awareness Month. The first National Autism Awareness Month was declared by the Autism Society in April 1970. The aim of this month is to educate the public about autism. Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 54 children in the United States today. Join us in learning about autism and increasing our empathy for others.
St. Jude Math-a-thon: Thank you to everyone who participated in our annual St. Jude Math-a-Thon. We raised a very generous $23,000! A special thank you to Mrs. Foti for coordinating this fundraiser each year. I think we are well on our way to being a Top 100 School for St. Jude’s. Just a reminder that all who participated in this year’s Math-a-thon may dress down on Monday April 19th. Mrs. Foti also wanted to let all know that those students who qualified for a prize from St. Jude’s should be receiving an email to redeem their prize from Halo. If you do not receive an email by April 23rd please email us at email@example.com and we will do our best to help.
School Yard After School: As the weather has changed and Spring is officially in the air we have been keeping the schoolyard open to about 3:30 pm each day. Please be mindful of your children playing after school. Everyone must remember to social distance or wear a mask and treat each other with kindness and respect. We hope that everyone can follow these guidelines so we can keep the schoolyard open for our students when the school is open.

Financial Aid for the 2021-2022 School Year: Futures in Education is proud to administer several scholarship programs, providing partial tuition assistance for families demonstrating financial need, and who meet eligibility requirements, to attend a Catholic academy or school in Brooklyn or Queens. To apply or get more information please click here. Just a reminder that the deadline for returning families who received an award in the previous academic year has passed. The deadline for new families (students who did not receive an award in the previous academic year) is May 31st. Applications will continue to be accepted beyond the deadline; those who have a completed application by May 31st will receive priority.
We are excited to share that awarding has started for returning families with completed applications. New families will begin to receive decision notifications as of June 1st, on a rolling basis until funding is exhausted. Applications will only be considered completed when all required supporting documents have been submitted. Awards will begin with applications that were completed by the deadline and will continue on a rolling basis as available funding allows.
ELA State Exam Update: This week we have been given the following guidelines in regards to State exams and Regents exams for our students for this school year. This year, the ELA and Mathematics exams for grades 3 through 8 will be multiple choice only. The test will be one day only and session 1 will be shortened by eliminating the field questions.
The ELA state exam is scheduled as follows
Wednesday, April 21st – Grade 4
Monday, April 26th -Grades 6 and 7 (Groups 1 and 3)
Tuesday, April 27th – Grades 6 and 7 (Group 2).
Tablet’s Covid Relief Fundraiser for Catholic Schools: Three weeks ago information went home with all children in regard to the “The Tablet” COVID Relief Fundraiser. The Fundraiser takes place between March 15 – April 16, 2021. We really need your help in trying to make this fundraiser a huge success to our academy. If each family does their part we will be able to keep St. Francis a 1:1 school both now and in the immediate future.
The Tablet has organized a subscription drive to help our academy offset the additional cost of COVID compliance. They also wanted to recognize the financial challenges many of our families face as a result of the pandemic.. This campaign will also support The Tablet’s work in reporting important news for Catholics. We believe it’s a win, win, win! You’ll be happy to know that our school can apply all of our students’ sales toward our DeSales Technology Grant requirements. Our participation in the DeSales Technology Grant in the past was one of the main reasons we were able and still are able to provide a device to all students in our school. This was very helpful especially last spring when we had to go to a 100% remote model. We hope that all of our families think to participate in this fundraiser as it helps us keep technology current in our school building. We have asked in the new grant for over 400 devices.
The program is easy, can be done entirely online, and has great incentives for the schools and students.
Each subscription (new or renewal) helps raise money for an individual student ($10 a subscription after a student sells three subscriptions) and our school ($5 a subscription). Help us reach our goal of 500 subscriptions sold to help us continue to keep our 1:1 I-pad/Chromebook program up to date.
Share the above link with family and friends. Please remember that even a renewal subscription counts. Remember to share the following information with the subscriber and remind them to enter it when placing their order to ensure your school and child gets the proper credit for the subscription:
The student’s first name
The student’s last name
The student’s grade
