SFDS Week of November 6th 2017

Dear Families,

As we look towards the first full week of November, it’s hard to believe that Halloween has already come and gone. We started this week with fun Halloween celebrations and were able to accomplish lots of great work as well. We will be keeping the 8th grade in our prayers this weekend as they set off to take their TACHS exam tomorrow morning. Best of luck, 8th Grade! We know you will do your very best.

Professional Day & Veterans Day: Remember that next week is a short week with a half day on Wednesday November 8th for our Faculty Meeting, a day off for students on Thursday November 9 for a Faculty Professional Day, and school is closed on Friday November 10 in observance of Veteran’s Day.

Class Picture Day: On Monday November 6, Class Picture day will be held for all grades and classes, Nursery through grade 8. Students should be in full winter uniform for this day. Reminder to the Fourth and Sixth graders who have gym scheduled on this day: please be in full winter dress uniform as well.

Vocation Awareness Week: Bishop DiMarzio has declared this year the Year of Vocations throughout the Brooklyn Diocese. Here at St. Francis, we will be marking this year in a special way with a Vocation Awareness Week from November 1st through November 8th. During these dates, all Religion classes will be centered around Vocations. On Wednesday November 8th, we will end this important week with the 6th, 7th and 8th graders attending an assembly Bishop Sanchez and Father Sean Suckiel, as well as a special school mass celebrated by Bishop Sanchez at 11am. We encourage any family who can attend to please join us for this Vocations liturgy.

Chicken Finger Day: On Tuesday November 28th, we are going to have a trial Chicken Finger lunch day. A form was sent home this week with all of the pertinent information and we are asking for it along with payment to be returned to the office by November 17th if you are interested in taking part in this trial day. If we receive a good turnout, we will continue the Chicken Finger Tuesday either monthly, biweekly, or weekly for the rest of the school year. Chicken fingers and fries will be $7 and you can also purchase a water for $1. Thank you to Mrs. Spaeth for helping to organize this special lunch day.

Grade 3 Family Mass: Please join St. Francis de Sales Parish in celebration of our third graders and their families this Sunday November 5th at 9am mass. A small fellowship will follow the mass for the third grade and their families in Father Reddy Hall after mass.

Blessed Trinity Confirmation Retreat: This Wednesday November 8th, our 8th graders who will be Confirmed at Blessed Trinity Parish will be taking a day of special prayer and reflection at their Confirmation Retreat. We hope you all have a wonderful, prayerful day!

Donations of Yarn: Pauleen Brown, a resident of Breezy Point and a Blessed Trinity parishioner, knits afghans for sick veterans in the VA hospital in Brooklyn. This special act is her way of showing the veterans that someone cares about them. Our school is collecting rolls of yarn to help her continue to make afghans for the sick veterans. If you would like to help, please send a ball of yarn to school by Monday November 13th.

Thanksgiving Donation: St. Francis de Sales parish is collecting money again this year to sponsor Thanksgiving dinners for those in need. Last year, with the help of your generosity, the parish was able to purchase 40 Thanksgiving dinners for families in need. If you’d like to help out, please send a $25 check (made out to St. Francis de Sales Church) or $25 cash in an envelope. Thank you again for your unwavering generosity.

Little Sisters of the Poor Drive: St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is sponsoring a Thanksgiving Drive for the Queen of Peace Residence for the elderly poor. Each year we ask classes to bring in assigned personal and food items, which are requested by the Little Sisters of the Poor who care for the residents. If you feel you can donate one or more of the requested items please send it to school no later than Friday November 17th.

Lunch Duty:   We are in need of some parents to help volunteering for our lunch periods. If you are VIRTUS trained and are able to do the lunch duty, we certainly appreciate it. We are continuing to assign lunch duty using a web-based service called Sign Up. It enables those who want to do lunch duty to sign up for slots on specific days with email reminders. It is our hope this will help with the number of cancellations and no shows from families.
