Dear Academy Families,
Just a reminder that St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is closed on Thursday November 9, as teachers will be gathering for a day of professional development.
St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is also closed on Friday November 10th for Veterans Day. During your rest and relaxation, let us reflect on all of the men and women who have served our amazing country in order to maintain our freedoms. We are forever indebted to them for their bravery, sacrifice, and selflessness. Happy Veterans’ Day.
Although it was a short week here at the Academy, next week has many different events and meetings to be aware of…..
Christmas Raffle: You are invited to take a chance on winning a cash prize in our Christmas Raffle. In fact by taking a chance you actually have the opportunity to win 31 cash prizes. In the calendar on the order form you will see a dollar amount in each box. The amount is the prize for the day. The winning ticket will be re-entered in the drawing for each of the following days during the month, so you’ll have 31 chances to win. Chances are $10 each or 3 for $20. Thank you for your generosity and continued support
Chicken Finger Day: On Tuesday November 28th, we are going to have a trial Chicken Finger lunch day. A form was sent home last week with all of the pertinent information and we are asking for it along with payment to be returned to the office by November 17th if you are interested in taking part in this trial day. If we receive a good turnout, we will continue the Chicken Finger Tuesday either monthly, biweekly, or weekly for the rest of the school year. Chicken fingers and fries will be $7 and you can also purchase a water for $1. Thank you to Mrs. Spaeth for helping to organize this special lunch day.
8th Grade Dinner Dance Meeting: Eighth grade families are invited to join Mrs. Martello and myself to the first Dinner Dance meeting on Thursday November 16th at 6pm. It’s our hope that we can decide chair people for various committees, kick off fundraising for the event, and choose the theme of the event.
Yarn: Pauleen Brown, a resident of Breezy Point and a Blessed Trinity parishioner, knits afghans for sick veterans in the VA hospital in Brooklyn. This special act is her way of showing the veterans that someone cares about them. Our school is collecting rolls of yarn to help her continue to make afghans for the sick veterans. If you would like to help, please send a ball of yarn to school by Monday November 13th.
Turkey: St. Francis de Sales parish is collecting money again this year to sponsor Thanksgiving dinners for those in need. Last year, with the help of your generosity, the parish was able to purchase 40 Thanksgiving dinners for families in need. If you’d like to help out, please send a $25 check (made out to St. Francis de Sales Church) or $25 cash in an envelope. Thank you again for your unwavering generosity.
Little Sisters of the Poor Drive: St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is sponsoring a Thanksgiving Drive for the Queen of Peace Residence for the elderly poor. Each year we ask classes to bring in assigned personal and food items, which are requested by the Little Sisters of the Poor who care for the residents. If you feel you can donate one or more of the requested items please send it to school no later than Friday November 17th.
The following items are needed:
8th Grade: Lotion
7th Grade: Body Wash
6th Grade: Purell
5th Grade: Liquid Hand Soap
4th Grade: Clorox or Lysol Wipes
3rd Grade: Paper Towels
2nd Grade: Toilet Paper
1st Grade: Mouthwash
Pre-Kindergarten and Nursery: Polident/Efferdent
Paul Effman Band: The music program is off to a great start this school year! This is a just a reminder that it is still not too late to join. If your child has never participated before, there is still plenty of time to get them enrolled and caught up with the classes. If your child has participated, and would still like to join, we’d love to see them back again. Oftentimes our lives are so busy and packed with work and family commitments that we forget how important music is to us, to our community, and to our culture. We are all impacted by music, every day of our lives. I personally believe if there were more musicians in this world, we’d be a smarter and happier world. So many of the musicians that we now listen to as adults have gotten their start in their school’s music program – school music programs are the starting point! Please encourage your children to continue to learn to play an instrument. I promise that it will become something far more than just a hobby. It will become a part of who they are. Again, if you haven’t registered yet, it is not too late! Please embrace this opportunity for them to make music with their peers. If they don’t, they may never have this opportunity again. For more information please click here.
Save the Date PDHP Parent Workshop: Please join us on Tuesday November 28th at 6pm for a special PDHP parent workshop. The topic of this workshop is Claim the Name: Bullying or Bad Behavior. The Workshop will have discussions and activities for parents designed to recognize the difference, protect their children, and effectively address a bullying and cyber-bullying scenario.
Lunch Duty: We are in need of some parents to help volunteering for our lunch periods. If you are VIRTUS trained and are able to do the lunch duty, we certainly appreciate it. We are continuing to assign lunch duty using a web-based service called Sign Up. It enables those who want to do lunch duty to sign up for slots on specific days with email reminders. It is our hope this will help with the number of cancellations and no shows from families.
