In the Catholic faith, the month of May is traditionally dedicated to Mary, our Blessed Mother. There are many ways to celebrate this particular devotion. We honor our Blessed Mother in a special way during the annual May Crowning prayer service. Our second grade students lead the entire community in this very special service. Please join the SFDS community on Tuesday May 22nd at 1:30pm for this special prayer service.
Now onto some exciting things happening in the upcoming week of May 7th:
Sacrament of First Holy Eucharist: Congratulations to many of our 2nd graders who will receive the sacrament of Eucharist for the first time this weekend. We are so proud of all of our 2nd graders who are now closer to Jesus. A special thank you to their teachers Mrs. Stathis, Mrs. Watters and Mrs. O’Malley for preparing them for this special moment. They will be joined by the rest of their classmates next weekend who will receive their communion on Saturday 5/12.
Just a reminder to those students receiving at St. Francis tomorrow you are asked to arrive at the small hall 30 minutes before your respective mass at 10:30am and 1:30pm.
PDHP Parent Workshop: Monday May 7 at 6pm “See you later, Alligator!” This parent workshop will discuss strategies for letting go, skills for supporting, and self- care for connecting for the early childhood parent. (Geared towards parents of students in Grades N,PK, and K)
Science Fair: This Wednesday May 9th, our students in grades 5-7 will be displaying their projects at our annual Science Fair, while our 8th grade students will be presenting their final religion projects on the novel, “The Shack” Families are invited to look at our students’ work from 10:00am-12:00pm and 1pm-2pm.
Nursery Mother’s Day Tea: Just a reminder that our Nursery moms are invited to a Mother’s Day tea on Friday May 11th. You should have already received the invitation and reminder from Mrs. Tenreiro. The Nursery students are very excited to shower their moms with a special song and gifts!
St. Jude Math-A-Thon: All permission slips and booklets have been handed out to students who are looking to participate in this year’s Math-A-Thon. All money raised goes directly to supporting St. Jude and their work with children with pediatric cancer. For several years, we have a been a top 100 school in fundraising across the country. Last year we were a Top 10 school. We so far have raised over $8,000 dollars. The absolute last day to donate in Wednesday May 9th. To qualify for any of the prizes you have to submit all money and book of math problem by Wednesday. Mrs. Foti needs to submit everything on Thursday the 10th.

Coffee with the Principal: Please join us for our final Coffee with the Principal of the school year either Tuesday May 8th at 6pm or Friday May 11th at 9am. We will be discussing the many exciting events and happenings going on throughout the rest of the school year.
Literacy Fair: The 4th through 6th grade Literacy Fair gives students the opportunity to present their favorite fiction/non-fiction book or their favorite author in a “fair” atmosphere through a variety of creative display methods. Our students have worked collaboratively over the last several weeks on their presentations, and they are looking forward to sharing their love of literature with the rest of the St. Francis de Sales community. Parents of 4th-6th graders are invited to join us on Tuesday ⅝ at 1:30pm-2:15pm to see their work.

Family Mass: Just a reminder that St. Francis de Sales Parish is celebrating the Grade 7 Family Mass this Sunday at 9am. For St. Francis de Sales Confirmandi, this is a mandatory event.
Option C Grades: We are now past the halfway point of the third trimester. If you haven’t already, please log on to the parent portal of Option C to check on how your child is progressing this year. This is a great way to see if your child is missing any assignments.
Summer Uniform: Although we saw a sneak peak into summer weather today, this Monday 5/7 students can begin to wear their summer uniforms regardless of the weather. Just a reminder that summer uniform (grades 1-8) consists of the school blue polo shirt and khaki shorts. Students should be wearing shoes (Black or Brown). Students should not be wearing sneakers or sandals. Socks should be regular white socks. Please be sure that your child(ren) are following our school uniform policies
Spring Fling: Finally, on Friday May 12th we will be hosting our last dance of the year for our 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Tickets are $10, and no tickets will be sold at the door.

Brooklyn Cyclone Night: Join us for our third annual night with the Brooklyn Cyclones! St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is participating in School Spirit Night fundraiser at MCU Park on June 20th at 7pm. If you would like to attend, send the cut off at the bottom of the flyer with your payment of $15 per ticket to the school office. While we cannot guarantee any seating arrangements, we suggest you send one order to cover everyone in your group. This way, it is more likely that all of your seats will be together. All orders must be received by Monday, May 15.

Outdoor Movie Night: On Friday May 25th, we will be hosting another Outdoor Movie Night. Gates open at 7:45, Movie starts promptly at 8:15. Come celebrate the start of Memorial Day weekend with us! Snacks will be sold. Don’t forget to bring your own beach chair or towel!
Pop Hop: We are very excited for our 3rd Annual Pop Hop on Friday May 19th at 6pm. There will be dinner, music, dancing, and of course the Photobooth! Mrs. Moriarty and Mrs. Shaw, our Pop Hop coordinators, are well on their way in the planning process. Please click here for more information and for an order form for tickets.
Paper Panda a local florist on 116th street is running a Pop Hop special. Just stop by and mention the SFDS Pop Hop and place an order for corsage. They are $10 for a Rose corsage and $5 for a carnation corsage. A portion of the proceeds will be going back to St. Francis.
Order must be placed by May 14th.
Memorial Day Parade: Please save the date for Monday May 28th and join the Academy community and Franny our Mascot to march in the Memorial Day Parade. More information will be given in the next week. We would love to see everyone come out for this special event.
Art Show: Please join us on May 30th at 6pm for our 2nd annual Art Show! Ms. Mangano and our students have worked tirelessly in preparation for a truly superb art gallery display. Spring Carnival: The National Junior Honor Society is sponsoring our annual Spring Carnival to be held on Friday May 25th, 2018. Nursery through Grade 5 are invited to participate in the activities created and operated by the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Admission to the carnival will be $1.00 per child, and there will be snacks and drinks available for purchase for $1.00 each on that day. To purchase a ticket, please send in a dollar in an envelope labeled with your child’s name and class and the word’s “Spring Carnival” on it. Tickets will be given to the teachers to distribute the day of the Carnival. Due to space, and time limitations, this carnival is open to students only. Thank you to Ms. Killian for coordinating this fun event!
This year St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy has a goal of raising $150,000 throughout the school year. We are happy to say we are well on our way of meeting our goal and have already raised over $118,000. Thanks again to all who make that event such a success each year.
