Hopefully we can leave the rain and gloomy weather behind as we, unbelievably, begin the month of May in just a few days. The end of the year is always a very busy time, and before we know it, we’ll be on the beach for summer vacation.
Lots of exciting things are happening in the upcoming week of May 1st:
Bittersweet News: A few weeks ago, Ms. Lograno let me know that the 2016-2017 school year was going to be her last here at St. Francis. Whether you’ve been a part of the SFDS family for many years or just a few months, I’m sure you realize what an important person Ms. Lograno is to our school community. Her dedication and hard work on behalf of the children and each one of us has been unwavering during her time as our school secretary. She is truly a one-of-a-kind person and it goes without saying that she will be sorely missed here at St. Francis.
Congratulations Mrs. Lograno!
Math State Exams: On Tuesday May 2, Wednesday May 3 and Thursday May 4, grades 4, 6 and 8 will be taking their Math New York State Exams. The best way to prepare for these tests is getting a good night’s sleep each night before, and eating a well-rounded and nutritious breakfast the morning of. We know students are going to be doing their very best. Unless your child is ill or their is a family emergency please make sure that they attend school that day.
First Communion: Our second grade’s special sacrament is fast approaching. They’ve worked and prayed all year in preparation for their First Holy Communion. We know it will be a wonderful day for all our second grade families. On Saturday May 6, SFDS Parishioners in 2A will be receiving First Holy Communion at 11a at St. Francis de Sales Parish and SFDS Parishioners in 2B will be receiving it on May 13th at 11a at St. Francis de Sales Parish. Those receiving the sacrament at Blessed Trinity Parish will receive it either at St. Thomas More on May 6 at 12n or St. Genevieve’s on May 13th at 12n
Book Fair and Golf Outing Thank You: We’d like to make a point to publicly thank two parents who have worked on two of our school fundraisers, the Scholastic Book Fair and the Annual Golf Outing. Mrs. Rita Martin and Mr. Jamie Agoglia have dedicated their time year after year and we are very appreciative of all their hard work. We could not have this wonderful school without the help of all of our fantastic parent volunteers. Thank you!
½ Day Wednesday 5/3: Just a reminder that Wednesday May 3rd is a 12:00n dismissal. There is no After School available. All students can dress down, however, please remember that all students must be dressed appropriately during these warmer months. Sandals/flip flops, very short shorts, open back shirts, tank tops, etc are not appropriate school attire.
Stop and Shop: Our Stop and Shop fundraiser was a great success this school year. With your help, the school received $3550! A very special thank you to Mrs. Lori Grace who coordinates this fundraiser over the course of the year.
Spring Carnival: The National Junior Honor Society is sponsoring our annual Spring Carnival to be held on Friday May 19th, 2017. Nursery through Grade 5 are invited to participate in the activities created and operated by the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Admission to the carnival will be $1.00 per child, and there will be snacks and drinks available for purchase for $1.00 each on that day. To purchase a ticket, please send in a dollar in an envelope labeled with your child’s name and class and the word’s “Spring Carnival” on it. Tickets will be given to the teachers to distribute the day of the Carnival. Due to space, and time limitations, this carnival is open to students only. Thank you to Ms. Edwards and Ms. Killian for coordinating this fun event!
State of the Academy: On Wednesday May 24th at 7p, the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy’s Board of Directors will be sharing updates on the various facets of our school’s programs, finances, facility, Catholic identity, and fundraising.
Box Tops: The Box Tops ice cream party competition is well underway. Currently, the 4th grade is leading by a small margin ahead of the 6th and 3rd grades. There’s still plenty of time to get those box tops in. Please remember to put your name and class on your submissions. Currently there are over 100 box tops that have been turned in that can’t be credited to a class. Check out the poster in the main hallway to see how your class is doing!
Cyclones: Join us for our second annual night with the Brooklyn Cyclones! St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is participating in School Spirit Night fundraiser at MCU Park on June 20th at 7pm. If you would like to attend, send the cut off at the bottom of the flyer with your payment of $17 per ticket to the school office. While we cannot guarantee any seating arrangements, we suggest you send one order to cover everyone in your group. This way, it is more likely that all of your seats will be together. All orders must be received by Monday, May 15.
Spring Fling: On Friday May 12th we will be hosting our last dance of the year for our 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Tickets are $10, and no tickets will be sold at the door.
