SFDS Week of January 8th 2018

Dear Families,

While we were greeted with freezing temperatures and  snow these past few days, our students hunkered down for some challenging work after a lengthy vacation on Tuesday and Wednesday. We hope you and your family stay warm this coming weekend as we look forward to next week’s events at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy.

Faculty Professional Day: Just a reminder that this upcoming Friday 1/12 kicks off a 4-day weekend with a day off for students as the faculty participates in a Diocesan wide professional development data day.

Early Childhood Registration: As we begin to prepare for the 2018-2019 school year, we want to ensure that our plans maximize the benefit to your child/children. We will begin open registration in Nursery, Pre-K and Kindergarten on January 8th. For more information on registration please click here.

Re-Registration: On January 9th re-registration packets will be sent home with the oldest child in the family. Please be sure to send back the envelope with the necessary documents and re-registration fee ($75.00) no later than Friday January 26th.

Fourth Grade Family Mass: Fourth Grade will be participating in the monthly grade–level Mass on Sunday, January 7 2018 at the 9:00am Mass. We hope you take this opportunity to share in the element of our faith that feeds us with your family and your family in Christ. Parents have a significant part to play in shaping the faith identity of children and engaging them in religious activities such as receiving the Eucharist, Reconciliation and service to others. We will have a reserved section of the Church upfront for your families.  A light fellowship will follow after the Mass and I hope you can join our parish in celebrating the 4th grade programs at St. Francis de Sales. We invite all families of the 4th graders to come to Mass and our fellowship.

First Penance: Good luck to our Saint Francis second graders who will be receiving first Penance on Wednesday 1/17 at 6:30pm.

We will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers as you continue on your spiritual journey and prepare for receiving the Eucharist for the first time.

Lunch Duty:   We are in need of some parents to help volunteering for our lunch periods. If you are VIRTUS trained and are able to do the lunch duty, we certainly appreciate it. We are continuing to assign lunch duty using a web-based service called Sign Up. It enables those who want to do lunch duty to sign up for slots on specific days with email reminders. It is our hope this will help with the number of cancellations and no shows from families.

To sign up for lunch duty please use the website: Lunch Duty Sign Up

1) Click the link above to see our Sign-Up on Sign Up

2) Review the options listed and choose the spot(s) you like.

3) Sign up! It’s Easy – you will NOT need to register an account or keep a password on Sign Up Volunteers, thank you so much for all of your help!

Enrichment Programs: Starting with Balanced Kidz this week we are starting our second round of enrichment programs here at St. Francis de Sales. Flyers have been sent home for various enrichment programs over the past month (Mad Science, Chess, Lego, and Balanced Kidz) and can be found on our website or by clicking here. Any questions please contact the main office at 718-634-2775.

Illness and Absent Notes: The cold and Flu season has begun and many parents ask, “When is my child sick enough to stay home from school?” This is not always an easy question to answer!  We hope that these tips can help.

A child who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and is likely to spread the illness to other children and staff.  We suggest making a plan for childcare ahead of time so you will not be caught without a comforting place for your child to stay if he/she is ill.

Our school policy states that you should not send your child to school if he/she has:

  • Fever in the past 24 hours
  • Vomiting in the past 24 hours
  • Diarrhea in the past 24 hours
  • Chills
  • Sore throat
  • Strep Throat (must have been taking an antibiotic for at least 24 hours before returning to school)
  • Bad cold, with a very runny nose or bad cough, especially if it has kept the child awake at night
  • Head lice – until your child has been treated according to the nurse or doctor’s instructions

If your child becomes ill at school and the teacher or school nurse feel the child is too sick to benefit from school or is contagious to other children, you will be called to come and take him/her home from school.  It is essential that your child’s teacher have a phone number where you can be contacted during the day and an emergency number in the event you cannot be reached.  Please be sure that arrangements can be made to transport your child home from school and that childcare is available in case of illness.  If your daytime or emergency phone number changes during the year, please notify your child’s teacher immediately.

Please call the school’s nurse or main office if you have any questions or concerns.

If your child is absent due to illness please send your child in when they return with an absent note. A sample note can be found by clicking here.

If your child returns without a note, they are than marked illegally absent until a note is received by the classroom teacher.

Card Party: We are 9 weeks away from our annual Card Party.

You may know that St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy’s Card Party is considered a premier Card Party in the area, and helps raise thousands of dollars for the school each year.

This Wednesday 1/10/18 there will be a Card Party Meeting at 7pm in the school. Anyone interested in helping, please feel free to come by or send an email to sfdscardparty@aol.com  for more information.

Option C Parent Portal: We are now getting close to the  halfway point of the 2nd trimester. If you haven’t already, log on to the parent portal of Option C to check on how your child is progressing this trimester. This is a great way to see if your child is missing any assignments. You should have already received usernames and passwords. Please contact the main office via email at admin@stfrancisschoolbh.net if you have any questions.

Have a great weekend! Keep warm!
