Dear Academy Families,
In the month of December, we spend time preparing children for concerts, decorating classrooms and hallways, making preparations for Christmas at home, shopping, baking, attending parties and sharing joy. As you know, Advent is the time for waiting, praying, and preparing ourselves for the birth of Christ. By taking a step away from the hustle and bustle, asking kids to slow down and reflect on what the birth of Christ means to them, the world, and our faith, such a richness will be added to this time of waiting.

Blessed Trinity Confirmation: Congratulations and God Bless! On Thursday December 7th at 5pm, many members of St. Francis de Sales Grade 8 will be blessed by the Holy Spirit at Blessed Trinity Parish. May the gifts of the Holy Spirit be with our 8th grade and lead them to be the future leaders of the church.
Report Cards: Just a reminder that report card day and night is on Thursday, December 7th, which is a half-day for students and there is no after-school available this day.
The times for conferences are as follows:
Afternoon Session: 12:45pm-2:45pm
Evening Session: 6:00pm-7:30pm
More information about Report Card Night will be emailed out next Monday.
Immaculate Conception: Friday December 8th is a Holy Day of Obligation for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Please remember that as Catholics, we are asked to go to mass on this day. School is closed on Friday, as it is the Feast Day of the United States and for our Brooklyn Diocese.
First Communion Proximate Prep: This Sunday 12/3 at 9:30am, all second graders receiving their First Holy Communion in St. Francis de Sales Parish are asked to join Mrs. Greene and Religious Education for their Proximate Prep mass and meeting. We will continue to pray for our second graders as they continue their journey to receive First Penance and Communion.
Graduation and Make up Pictures: On December 11th, the 8th grade will be taking their individual graduation pictures. If your child was absent on the original picture day, please know your child can dress up or wear their uniform for their picture on 12/11. If you would like your child to retake their picture, please send in your original pictures with a note before Thursday December 7th. We will call down the students whose pictures we have the next school day for make ups.
SFDS Festival of Lights: Please join St. Francis de Sales Parish on Tuesday 12/12 at 6:30pm for an annual tradition, the lighting of trees in our prayer garden. There will be Hot Chocolate for all with Christmas Carols sung. Please be there for what is a great tradition here at St. Francis.
Student Illness: As the colder weather begins, we see more and more children who become ill. A child who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and is likely to spread the illness to other children and staff. If your child is ill, before sending them back to school please clear it with your child’s pediatrician. Please call the school’s nurse or main office if you have any questions or concerns.
Early Childhood Registration: As we begin to prepare for the 2018-2019 school year, we want to ensure that our plans maximize the benefit to your child/children. Two weeks ago we sent home letters of intent for any current Nursery and Pre-K student here at St. Francis who plans on attending St. Francis in 2018 as a Pre-K or Kindergarten student. Those forms are now past due As always, we thank you for your dedication and support to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy. If you have any concerns that we may address, please do not hesitate to call us or email us.
This week a letter was sent home to families of current students to see if any siblings of current students will be joining our Early Childhood. Please send in all letters of intent as soon as possible as we will begin open registration in Nursery, Pre-K and Kindergarten early in January. This is especially important to do for next year’s Kindergarten class.
Christmas Show: It is amazing that when we return next Monday we only have three weeks of school until Christmas. Any questions about tickets please call the office. An order form for tickets can be found here. Please note that all ticket orders are due by Thursday December 7th.

Paul Effman Band: Experienced musicians will perform at the Christmas Show on December 20th and December 21st. Tuesday’s December 5th, 12th and 19th, Experienced Violin will practice from 3:45-4:30 and Experienced Band will practice from 3:45-4:45 to prepare for our Christmas concert.This practice will replace the small group lessons. Beginners will be performing in the Spring Concert and will keep their regular scheduled lessons. Thank you!
Toys for Tots: With the Christmas season approaching, as we look forward to the birth of our Lord, we should remember those less fortunate than us. In the spirit of giving, we are asking that students donate a gift for other children. Please bring in an unwrapped toy or game as soon as possible. All donations will go to children in need. Thank you for your generosity.
Lunch Duty: We are in need of some parents to help volunteering for our lunch periods. If you are VIRTUS trained and are able to do the lunch duty, we certainly appreciate it. We are continuing to assign lunch duty using a web-based service called Sign Up. It enables those who want to do lunch duty to sign up for slots on specific days with email reminders. It is our hope this will help with the number of cancellations and no shows from families.

Box Tops for Education: Hopefully you have been clipping box tops at home as our second contest is set to begin. This contest’s prize will be a movie party for the winning class. What’s a movie without popcorn? The contest begins now and will run through February 27th. Let’s try and double our last contest! If you use the Box Tops app, those tabulations will be counted.
