Happy Summer

Dear Families,

Summer is now upon us, and I am sure that each of you have some plans to enjoy the weather and the extra time. I pray that you will have some great family time and will return safely and refreshed.  We are blessed to have just finished another wonderful year filled with great memories.

To those that are leaving St. Francis de Sales this June we wish you the best of luck in your new schools.

We want to thank you, parents, for your support. We couldn’t teach your students to this degree without a good school/home partnership. The work the students and teachers have done this year was focused on our children, and it makes me proud to be a part of this very special place. We look forward to opening our doors next year to about 555 students. But remember, summer does not mean we take a vacation from the Lord! I encourage you, wherever you may be this summer, to make time to come to Mass on Sundays and to pray every day!

Please make note of the following:

As you know, this week, sadly, we say farewell to Mrs. Martello our assistant principal.  While we wish her the best of luck in their future endeavors, we certainly will miss her here at St. Francis.

We are happy to announce that our new Assistant Principal, Mrs. Megan Faughnan, will be joining the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy family on August 15th. Mrs. Faughnan is a certified Literacy Specialist and School Building Leader, and joins us from Partnership Schools—a network of Catholic schools in Manhattan. Over her last five years at Partnership, she served as their head of academics in a school setting and most recently, the Curriculum Manager for all seven networked schools. Her fifteen years of professional experience in education also spans from Dean of Student Learning and Support and Learning Specialist at Cristo Rey High School to an AmeriCorp teacher in South Dakota. Mrs. Faughnan is extremely excited to start her new chapter here in Belle Harbor and I look forward to you meeting her in September.

I am also happy to announce the following changes to our current faculty:

  • Ms. Meittinis is moving up to our 4th grade
  • We welcome Mrs. Surgot as one of our new 1st grade teachers.

Mrs. Surgot is currently teaching at St. Francis Xavier School and has been a dedicated Catholic School educator. Welcome, Mrs. Surgot, to St. Francis and to our 1st grade team!

We remain dedicated to advancing your child’s academic, social and spiritual development in a supportive, safe and challenging learning environment. We welcome your active participation in your child’s education, and we urge you to be proactive in communicating with our administration and teachers, and, as time allows, to volunteer in our various programs and events. By working together, we will ensure success for your children.

I hope we all return in September with new energy and with renewed commitments to this very special Academy.

Enjoy the summer, and we will see you in the Fall!

Christopher Scharbach

Principal

PS: Please keep in mind that one of our first charity events will be St. Baldrick’s “Bald on the Beach” on September 15th. You might consider holding off on that back to school haircut until then…

SFDS Week of June 17th 2019 (Last Week of School)

Dear Families,

What Is A Dad?

A dad is someone who wants to catch you before you fall but instead picks you up,brushes you off, and lets you try again.

A dad is someone who wants to keep you from making mistakes but instead lets you find your own way, even though his heart breaks in silence when you get hurt.

A dad is someone who holds you when you cry, scolds you when you break the rules, shines with pride when you succeed, and has faith in you even when you fail…

Happy Father’s Day to all the Fathers, Grandfathers, Godfathers, Uncles, and special men in all of our academy family. Don’t forget that this Sunday at 9am is the annual Father’s Day Beach Mass on Beach 129th Street. Don’t forget to bring a beach chair.

The long awaited last day of school is fast approaching! The 2018-2019 school year is drawing to a close, and from all indications, it has been a very productive one. Thank you for placing your faith in Saint Francis and for entrusting your children, your prized treasures, to our care.  On behalf of the entire school community, we wish you a very happy, healthy and safe, fun-filled summer vacation. The school offices will be open on various days over the summer, please refer to the calendar on the website for hours.

Congrats to the Class of 2019 who graduate from St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy tonight. We wish them all the best as they move into the next chapter of their lives.

Farewell Mrs. Martello:  It is with mixed emotions that we say farewell to our Assistant Principal Mrs. Martello who will be leaving St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy in August 2019.  Mrs. Martello and I have been working closely together over the past five years to educate your children. While I am saddened to see her leave, we wish her will in her future.

Please rest assured that we have already begun the process of searching for Mrs. Martello’s replacement.  We have been working closely with the Board of Directors to ensure that we hire a strong candidate to succeed Mrs. Martello, who will be working closely with the school to ensure a smooth transition.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask that you all join me in wishing Mrs. Martello  success in her future.

Box Tops: This week a ziploc bag went home with your child to begin to start collecting box tops over the summer for our fall contest during the 2019-2020 school year. We had a very successful collection this year and know next year we will do even better. As always thank you for all your support. Thanks again to Mrs. Henning for coordinating this year’s Box Tops contests.

FACTS Management: One of our primary goals at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is to concentrate our efforts on improving the business side of our school. By taking advantage of the security and convenience of payment processing and information technology offered by FACTS, we remain committed to this goal. Tuition payments for the 2019-2020 school year can be paid online, by phone, or by mail. You may also sign up for autopay as well. Only in an emergency will payment be accepted in the school building and/or rectory. Email invites will be going out to returning families next week.

You will realize these benefits by using FACTS for your tuition payment plan:

Payment Dates: Automatic payments can be made from a checking or savings account.

Enrolling in FACTS: You should have received an email invite this week from FACTS with information necessary to enroll.   Included in the invite will be the website you will need to access.

Convenience & Security: Along with multiple payment plan options, your payments are processed securely through a bank to bank transaction.

Consumer Account: You may check your personal account or make payments online from the convenience of your home or office anytime.

With FACTS, the school maintains decision-making control. As always, we will continue to work with families should special circumstances or “hardship” cases arise during the school year.

SFDS Week of June 10th 2019

Dear Families,

Congratulations! Today is your day.

You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away!

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own.

And you know what you know. You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.

Dr. Seuss, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”

Congrats to the Class of 2019 who will be graduating next Friday at 6pm from St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy. We wish them all the best as they move into the next chapter of their lives.

On to what is going on this week at St. Francis…

Class Placement: Myself, Mrs. Martello and our faculty work diligently to make sure each and every child is placed with a teacher that best fits their needs. No matter which classroom your child is placed in, they are in supremely good hands. Every one of our teachers is intelligent, loving, and hardworking. As stated each year before, we cannot take requests for class placement. Writing emails or making phone calls to request a specific classroom all receive the same response: we are not able to honor any requests for placement and that your child will be in very good hands wherever they are placed. We thank you for your cooperation.

Step Up: This week our Nursery (Wednesday 6/12) students will be wowing us all in their Step Up Ceremonies in the small hall. Please follow the directives given by Mrs. Troia and the main office for this special day.

Ballroom Bash: Just a reminder to our 6th grade families that on Friday June 14th at 10:45am all are invited to view our annual Ballroom Bash in the School Gym.

Conversation with the Principal: It currently costs in excess of $7,100 to educate each child that attends Saint Francis thus all children receive an excellent education at a discounted rate.  Our fund-raising activities are a key component of our ability to provide a Catholic education at an affordable price. It is imperative that all families continue to support our fundraising efforts through active participation in their execution and their attendance at as many events as possible. I invite you to attend a fundraising meeting on Wednesday June 12th at 7pm to discuss new or reinvented fundraising ideas. If you can’t attend, but have an idea please email us at admin@stfrancisschoolbh.net

Beach Parties: As we come to the home stretch of the end of the year we have our end of the year beach parties to celebrate the close of another year of learning. This week Grades K, 1, 2, 3,  5 and 6 will have their Beach Parties. Please follow the directives that were given out by the classroom teacher and class captains in earlier correspondences.

Special Lunch Days: Monday (6/10) is the last bagel day of the school year. Thanks again to all the parents that come on a weekly basis for helping coordinate this special lunch. This Friday 6/14 is a makeup pizza day for Grades 2, 5, and 6.  Thanks to all the parents who make our special lunches a huge success each and every year.

Catholic Grandparents Association: St. Francis de Sales Parish is starting a new ministry the Catholic Grandparents Association. The first meeting will be Monday 6/10 at 7pm. Being a Grandparent is a joyous and noble vocation. In 2013, the role of Grandparents was clarified in the Catholic Church to the CGA by the Pontifical Council for the Family as “Preeminent Collaborators” in the upbringing and instruction of their Grandchildren. It is an increasingly important role and status of Grandparents, helping them to work together with their children to seek out the very best for our grandchildren. The Catholic Grandparents Association (CGA) exists to promote the awareness of the vocation of Grandparents and to support and value them in their great task of passing on the faith, not an easy job in this day and age! The world today is much different from the one many Grandparents grew up in. Grandparents instinctively understand the great human, moral and spiritual challenges children face today in the world in which they are growing up. For many children today, their Grandparents may be the only practicing Catholic members of their family. However, even those children growing up with the blessing of devout Catholic parents must grow to maturity in a highly secularised world which radically competes for their hearts and minds and denies the need for God.

Fundraising Corner

Box Tops for Education: Congratulations to our Pre-K and Kindergarten classes who both were awarded with an ice cream party next week. Please note the Pre-K class will have an ice cream party on Wednesday, while the Kindergarten class will have theirs on Friday. Thanks again to all who make our Box Tops collection so successful.

PS: We are always in need of some parents to help volunteering for our lunch periods. If you are VIRTUS trained and are able to do the lunch duty, we certainly appreciate it. We are continuing to assign lunch duty using a web-based service called Sign Up. It enables those who want to do lunch duty to sign up for slots on specific days with email reminders. It is our hope this will help with the number of cancellations and no shows from families.

To sign up for lunch duty please use the website: Lunch Duty Sign Up

1) Click the link above to see our Sign-Up on Sign 2) Review the options listed and choose the spot(s) you like.

3) Sign up! It’s Easy – you will NOT need to register an account or keep a password on Sign Up

More good luck wishes are in order for our students in grades 5-7 who will be using this weekend to finish up their studying for next week’s finals. We know they will do the best they can.

SFDS Week of May 27th 2019

Dear Families,

And they who for their country die shall fill an honored grave, for glory lights the soldier’s tomb, and beauty weeps the brave.

— Joseph Rodman Drake, To the Defenders of New Orleans

Memorial Day has come to signify the start of summer for many Americans and is often celebrated with cookouts, family get-togethers, road races and concerts. But the real meaning of Memorial Day has, for too many Americans, gotten lost in holiday hoopla. Memorial Day was created as an occasion to honor those who have paid the ultimate price to ensure our freedom. It is our opportunity to stop and give thanks for the many who have died protecting that freedom. Let us this weekend keep all those who have died for this country in our prayers.

Memorial Day Parade: Please join us this Monday May 27th and join the Academy community and our Mascot Franny to march in the Memorial Day Parade. St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy will be marching in the parade at 11:30am in the morning following the Memorial Day Mass at 10:30am. The parade starts right here on 129th street.  We would love to see everyone come out for this special event. All students are encouraged to wear their uniform on this day. We will be marching until 120th street.

Ascension Thursday:  Forty Days after the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Acts of the Apostles records Jesus’ ascension into heaven.  In the Roman Catholic Church, it is one of the universally celebrated feasts, ranking with the feasts of the Passion, of Easter, and Pentecost. The Academy community will gather at 10am this Thursday to celebrate liturgy.  Families are invited to join the Academy at this special mass.

2019-2020 Calendar: A tentative calendar for the next school year has been posted to our website. As always the calendar is subject to change if necessary. Please check periodically for more details about next year’s school events over the next few weeks.

Some of the announcements discussed were next year’s tuition schedule, which can be found by clicking here, the exciting news of opening up a third 1st grade class, and the sad news that our Assistant Principal, Mrs. Martello, will be leaving at the end of this school year. It goes without saying that Mrs. Martello will be greatly missed here at St. Francis. Terranovas Grades K-2: This week, we are implementing TerraNova testing in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd  grades. From May 15th-May 23rd the Terra Nova assessment series will be administered to students in grades Kindergarten  through Grade 2. It is important that all academy families understand the rationale behind administering a standardized assessment.  The word test means different things to different students.  Some students embrace the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge; other students become apprehensive and fearful at the prospect of taking a test.  There is a difference between testing and assessing.  An assessment is an educational tool to measure the present status of a student’s skills.  The Terra Nova is designed to measure concepts, processes, and objectives taught throughout the nation.  Terra Nova results are used to: analyze strengths and weaknesses of a student’s achievement in each content area; plan for further instruction; plan for curriculum development; and to report progress to parents.

The assessments will be done over the course a few 3-4 days for about 30 minutes each day, and will be guided by your students’ classroom teachers. As always, please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have an issue, or question.  We are only a phone call or email away.

Spring Carnival: The National Junior Honor Society is sponsoring our annual Spring Carnival to be held on Friday May 17th, 2019. Nursery through Grade 5 are invited to participate in the activities created and operated by the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Admission to the carnival will be $1.00 per child, and there will be snacks and drinks available for purchase for $1.00 each on that day. To purchase a ticket, please send in a dollar in an envelope labeled with your child’s name and class and the word’s “Spring Carnival” on it. Tickets will be given to the teachers to distribute the day of the Carnival. Due to space, and time limitations, this carnival is open to students only. It is a dress down day. However, tanks, sleeveless jerseys, short shorts, flip flops or sandals will not be allowed. Please be sure that your child comes in dressed correctly on Friday as it will help reduce the office’s morning phone calls. ALL students should have sunscreen on before coming to school. Thank you to Ms. Killian for coordinating this fun event!

Just a few weeks ago we went through the AdvanceED Accreditation. This Accreditation Process helps us make the most of their talents and resources. The AdvancED Performance Accreditation requires that institutions must:

  •     Meet the AdvancED Standards and accreditation policies.
  •     Demonstrate quality assurance through internal and engagement reviews.
  •     Engage in continuous improvement.

It is helpful to the academy board of directors and administrative team to have families complete this survey.

In order to complete the survey, please click here.

Last year we had about 40% of our families complete our annual survey. We are really asking that we have as many families complete this survey.

Please be assured that your responses to this survey will be anonymous. Your honest opinion is appreciated. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Please take a few moments before Monday May 6th to give some feedback on your experience this year here at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy.
