Weekly Update #10 SFDS Week of November 15th

Just a quick reminder that school is closed on Thursday, November 11th for Veteran’s Day and a day off for students on Friday, November 12th for a Faculty Professional Day. Enjoy the 4 day weekend!


Now onto some important reminders, news, and events at the academy in the upcoming days….


Early Childhood Registration: As we begin to prepare for the 2022-2023 school year, we want to ensure that our plans maximize the benefit to your child/children. In the past few days, we issued a Google Form of intent for any current Nursery and Pre-K student here at St. Francis who plans on attending St. Francis in 2022 as a Pre-K or Kindergarten student. Those forms are due by Monday, November 29th.  As always, we thank you for your dedication and support to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy. If you have any concerns that we may address, please do not hesitate to call us or email us. 

After Thanksgiving, an email will be sent home to families of current students to see if any siblings of current students will be joining our Early Childhood. Please fill out all letters of intent as soon as possible as we will begin open registration in the winter of 2022.  This is especially important to do with our current enrollment numbers. 

Tuition Arrears: This Monday 11/15  the 4th tuition payment is due.  Please be mindful of the fact to keep your account up to date on FACTS for all tuition or any outstanding fees. Please remember that report cards are not distributed unless your account is up to date as of 11/15/21. Any issues please feel free to be in touch. 

Report Cards: Please note that all report cards are digitally distributed on Monday 12/6 at about 3 pm via the FACTS Parent Portal. This year all conferences will be done in person and will take place on Tuesday 12/7. More information about signing up for these conferences will be forthcoming.  

Our report cards are linked to New York State standards for the quality of work students do. As we move forward this school year, it is important for us to share the Schools’ way of evaluating student progress and the thinking behind it: 

  • Nursery will receive three progress reports throughout the school year. 
  • The Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten report card measures progress in terms of not demonstrating, beginning, developing, and secure. 
  • Grades 1-4 will implement the use of a standards-based report card. These report cards will look very similar to the report cards in the past as they will continue to provide information on a student’s developmental abilities and progress in relation to the learning standards outlined in each subject. The one major difference will be that this report card will use a scale of 1-4 rather than an Alpha Scale (A-F) or number to indicate progress on the grade-level standards for each trimester in the five subject areas of Math, ELA, SS, Science, and Religion. Performance Level scores are not based on one assessment experience. Teachers design multiple assessment tasks and collect evidence of student learning throughout the grading period. Evidence may include teacher observations, student work samples, projects, tests, quizzes, and district assessments. Teachers review these items for evidence of learning when grading student progress for the report card. It is important to note that the Performance Level is based on the units of study and concepts and skills taught for that trimester. It is quite possible for a child to achieve a 3 or 4 in the first trimester and then achieve a 2 in the next. 
  • Grades 5-8 will have a more traditional report card that uses a numerical scale. How these grades are determined will differ by subject and by the teacher. Individual grading policies were shared with families at the beginning of the school year.

As we have said in the past the FACTS Family portal is a great way to see how your child is progressing throughout the school year. 


Little Sisters of the Poor Drive: St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy is sponsoring a Thanksgiving Drive for the Queen of Peace Residence for the elderly poor. Each year we ask classes to bring in assigned personal and food items, which are requested by the Little Sisters of the Poor who care for the residents. If you feel you can donate one or more of the requested items please send it to school no later than Friday November 19th.

SFDS Family Mass: St. Francis de Sales Parish invites all families to the November Family Mass next Sunday, November 21, 2021, at 10:00 AM. 

Each month they will have specific grades participate in the liturgy.  For November, they extend an extra warm welcome to the children of the parish in Third Grade. Any parish children in third grade that would like to participate in our liturgy are encouraged to sign up. There will be a practice next Friday afternoon. VIRTUS Training: For the safety and well being of each and every child in our school, all volunteers must go through the following process:

1) Read and sign a code of conduct

2) Have a background check

3) Take part in the VIRTUS program. (Register at virtusonline.org. Download the registration guide.)

After completing the VIRTUS Program we ask that you please bring to the office a copy of your certificate for us to keep track of in our database. We hope that this is not an inconvenience for anyone, but we need to be sure that all adults who interact with students are in compliance.

We wanted to let all families know that there will be a VIRTUS training session taking place at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy on Thursday, November 18th at 7:00 pm.  The session will last three hours.  Any adult who has contact with children must be VIRTUS trained.  This applies to fundraising activities that involve contact with children, as well as volunteering in our building as guidelines begin to allow. We do anticipate having parent volunteers in our building in the very near future and this is an absolute must for any parent that would like to come into the building while children are present. 

Many of you are new to the St. Francis Family this year; therefore, I would strongly encourage you to sign up for this session to ensure you are not excluded from any activities going forward.  Although sessions are held monthly at other locations throughout Queens and online and you may attend any VIRTUS program, this may be the only opportunity that will exist at the Academy during this school year. 

You must register in advance for this workshop as there are only 30 spots encouraged to go to the VIRTUS website, www.virtus.org, and register.  The registration directions can be found on the back of this correspondence. No walkup registration will be accepted.

Thanksgiving Donation: St. Francis de Sales Parish is collecting money again this year to sponsor Thanksgiving dinners for those in need. Last year, with the help of your generosity, the parish was able to purchase Thanksgiving dinners for families in need. If you’d like to help out, please send a $25 check (made out to St. Francis de Sales Church) or $25 cash in an envelope. Thank you again for your unwavering generosity. 


AFA Mass of Thanksgiving: Please note that the AFA Mass of Thanksgiving for parents and guardians originally scheduled for next Wednesday 11/17 has been postponed till the Winter of 2022. Thanks so much for your understanding. 


Picture Day: Please note that individual photos for Nursery-Kindergarten will be on 12/1 and 8th grade will be on 11/30. A separate order form will be sent home for those grade levels closer to their picture day.

All students in Grades 1-7 who were absent on individual picture day will have their makeup picture taken on Wednesday 12/1. 


Fundraising Corner 

Franny Fun Run: The Academy Family Association is proud to announce the second annual 2021 Franny Fun Run/Walk scheduled for Saturday, November 20th, 2021.  The run/walk will take place on Rockaway Beach Boulevard from Beach 129th to Beach 139th Street and back.  Smaller courses will be set up for the younger classes.  The Academy Family Association is currently planning for what should be a fun morning run/walk and a small post-celebration.  The schedule of events for the day includes:

11:00 AM:         Mini Race  (Run or Walk) for Nursery, Pre-K, and Kindergarten students

11:15 AM:         One Mile  (Run or Walk) for Students in Grades 1-8

12:00 – 1:00 PM Post Celebration in the SFDS Schoolyard

***  Please Note: All participants must be accompanied by at least one parent/guardian. 

We ask you to join us in supporting our 2nd Annual Franny Fun Run/Walk Fundraiser to help us achieve our goal of school-wide air conditioning. We hope you can help, volunteer, and enjoy this wonderful school event!  Our challenge of $60,000 in donations is attainable if everyone can do their part. We are just over $37,000 All students with any donation by Thursday 11/18 will be able to participate and receive a T-Shirt to wear during the Run/Walk on 11/20. All donations up until Tuesday 11/23 will count towards individual and class prizes. Finally to qualify for the dress down day on Friday 12/3 a child must meet their goal of $50 by Thursday 12/2.

Christmas Wreath and Poinsettia Sale: We are partnering up with Shannon’s Florist in Brooklyn to have a Christmas  Wreath and Poinsettia Nursery Sale. An order form will be sent out early next week. All order forms are due by Monday, November 22nd.  We need to have the order to the florist no later than Tuesday, November 23rd. The items will be delivered to the school early during the week of November 29th and will be available to be picked up at dismissal. Thanks to Mrs. Rasmussen for coordinating this sale. 



Thanksgiving Holiday: Just a reminder that St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy has a half-day on Wednesday 11/24 with 12-noon dismissal. This is then followed by Thanksgiving Recess on 11/25 and 11/26. Happy Thanksgiving. 

Advent Prayer Service: Please save the date of Tuesday, November 30th at 6:30 pm for a special Academy family Advent Prayer Service. All Academy Parents and their children are invited to attend this special prayer service as we get ready for the coming of the Baby Jesus once again. 

Toys for Tots: With the Christmas season approaching, as we look forward to the birth of our Lord, we should remember those less fortunate than us. In the spirit of giving, we are asking that students donate a gift for other children. Please bring in an unwrapped toy or game as soon as possible. All donations will go to children in need. Thank you for your generosity. All donations need to be made by Friday 12/17.  

Polar Express: We are so excited to announce that we will have our Annual Polar Express Night this year in the school Gym on Friday, December 3rd. We will be having two sessions this year. The 1st session will be only for Kindergarten and 1st-grade students from 4 pm-6 pm. Our second session will be for 2nd-4th graders from 6:30 pm-8:30 pm. We are looking forward to this night. More information will be forthcoming about price and health guidelines that need to be followed. All Aboard!

Christmas Boutique: We are also happy to announce the return of our Christmas Boutique in person this year. The Christmas Boutique for our students will be December 15th- December 17th.
